Exhaust Leaking Past Pyro Fitting In Exhaust Manifold

I have taken some pictures to show everyone out there that has not seen or is not familiar with the new MLS (multi layer stee) head gaskets that the 3rd gen trucks are using.

Kind of crapy pictures, but the will have to do.

Here is a MLS

Following this one in two places! I'm coming up on this stuff to prep for twins, interesting reading so far. I'm still puzzled by the variance in opinions about gaskets and o-rings/fire-rings, studs are about the only item that gets universal acclaim!

Matt,

The MLS gasket can be used on a 12v. From what I understand, the problem is to achieve it's maximum effectivenss both the deck and the head need to be perfectly flat. Given that, unless a guy plans on pulling the engine I personally do not consider the MLS gasket an option for us 12v's that are just replacing a popped HG.

O rings and Fire rings are only supposed to be used on a perfectly flat head deck too!

If the head and block are within Cummins specs the MLS should work just fine.

i took that aspect of orings and fire rings as being common sense, guess i shoul dhave explained myself. for everything the head and deck need to be as true as possible, 2 flat surfaces seal better than one flat and one warped. i have just heard wil the mls that there is no room for error and with an engine with some miles on it there is going to be alittle variation in the head. like my motor had about a thou and a half dip in the block which most likely helped my first HG give way. i think there is a great future in high boost applications for the mls, it just needs to be set up right, just like everything else.

Agreed, but that rumor of perfectness was started by someone on another website that is not allowed to post on this website.

He also sells O ringed heads.

MLS is a good gasket and is capable of holding more boost than the older traditional style unit. It is also more forgiving in my opinion and more adaptable to uneven surfaces.

But what do I know, I havent ran any computer programs to verify.

The rumor mentioned is more than just a rumor..... Check with some engine builders that use this type gasket and see what they say. I was going to install a MLS gasket this fall in my truck when the headgasket blew, but upon learning more about them and the work involved to ensure a good seal I opted for an OEM model.

O-rings or fire rings are better than a MLS anyday on a bombed truck. But a MLS gasket as found on the newer trucks is a better solution for the new motors coming in our trucks than what used to be installed.
