New price for Rotella

1/8 npt fitting.

I was at Wally tonight too and they don't stock the 5w40, also my local Valvoline supplier doesn't have the Extreme Syn either. :(

Jeff, actually you did exactly what I wanted!! :D Serious discussion about my topic with lots of useful information. :-{} I'm wondering though... Do you work for Valvoline??? You sound like a commercial for them! :-laf One of the better results I received out of this is too much info. Members telling me to find the Mobil 1 at WalMart. I didn't expect this, although I should have known better. :-laf Thanks to ALL who replied... John

Jeff,

Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme is a Group III synthetic basestock. It only allowed to be called synthetic because the courts decided, in a case regarding Castrol Syntc several years ago, that Group III oils could have this right . As myself and LightmanE300 have pointed out, and I am certain amsoilman is aware of also, Group III syntetic basestocks are not in the same league as the "true" synthetic Group IV oils.

This is not to say that the PB Extreme, or anyother Group III oil for that matter, is not a good oil. Most Group III oils are offer some of the very same advantages as the true synthetic oils and FWIW - I am running a group III oil in my truck.

The Group III synthetic "issue" is pretty common knowledge in the oil industry. If you were to do a little searching around a few of the oil specific forums you would find this to be true. I brought up the issue to hopefully prevent anybody from paying too much for a group III oil. A true synthetic oil can be purchased at Wally World for $20 a gallon why would somebody want to get "duked" into buying a synthetic oil for $18 plus dollars a gallon (as the PB Extreme that I have seen is selling at) for an oil that should cost no more than $13-$14 a gallon. It is simply not that special.

I COMPLETLY agree! :D

Hey John, I actually work for Harley-Davidson. I just like Valvoline oil. I even use Premium Blue 15w-40 in my kubota diesel tractor. Thanks for the clarification on oil. I'll still use the Extreme from Valvoline. Jeff

I am running a Base Stock III oil, Rotella synthetic with the hopes that I have something that is as slippery as Delo 400 plus has the added benefit of a little better cold flow ability and less burnoff at high temps. Does this oil compete with Delo 400? That I can't tell you but I hope for $12. 84/gallon it's giving me something better than Delo 400. . . a tough Dino oil to beat.

In order to affordably reap the outstanding benefits base stock IV synthetics give you, you need to run extended drain intervals.

Part of my reason giving the Rotella a try is to hopefully have an oil that is superior to dino, that I can afford to change on 10k intervals. At some point I may go back to the Amsoil, because it gave me such great oil analysis numbers.

Vaughn,

I have two questions for you.

How many miles did you get on the Amsoil before you had to change it? Did you change it based on the oil analysis recommendations?

Wayne I went 20,000 miles. Analysis always said OK for continued use but I thought at 20k I got my money's worth and didn't feel comfortable with going further since I didn't have bypass. I changed the Stratapore every 7-8k (at each change plus 2 times in between)

From Jeff Knight:
John,I work on the assembly line that would have built your motorcycle.

Jeff, I often wonder, what's better? Building or riding a Harley Davidson ? :-laf In my opinion, I have to say riding :D .

Thanks for yout opinion about the oil, and thanks for building a great bike. John :)

Thanks Vaughn. I have a friend with a Powerstroke that does the same thing. Figures he has his monies worth, so he doesn't go any further. He has been doing it this way for several years.

Thanks, Wayne

Mobile Delvac 1

If your using a 15W/40 oil and switch over to a 5W/40 synthetic. . I guarantee you'll notice this difference. I changed over to Mobile Delvac 1 after 20k and like what it did for cold starts, keeping temps lower (while towing) and increased mileage. Now with a bypass filter in place. . oil changes are a thing of the past. Just top up the oil after replacing the filter and go.

For you Harley guy's... check this out!

Mike

Mike, nice bike ;) I also switched to a synthetic oil after 25K miles. (Amsoil series 3000 5-30). But recently, my home financial situation has changed dramatically. :{ I can no longer afford to pay $100. 00 for an O/C ( series 3000 goes for $32. 00/gal. ). :{ Added to this, I just recently had to shell out almost $2500. 00 in various repairs :{ , and this is why I HAVE to find a more affordable synthetic oil suitable for my CTD. I don't have a by-pass filtration system, and don't intend to get one. I tried the oil analysis, but at almost $20. 00 a whack, figured it was finacially better for me to just change it after 10K mi. (oil was still good). I'm off to Wally world to-nite to check out the Mobil 1 for SUV use... :-laf

Yeah... that's a sweet bike. Wish it was mine. My dream bike has always been the Vincent Black Shadow. They're soo rare there's just no way I'll get one. The Harley flat trackers though. . run a close second for me. Can't afford one of those either. Gotta hit the lottery.

Just checked out Walmart- the Mobil 1 for SUV use seems OK. Mobil says it's approved for use by Cummins, Powerstroke (yes, the label says Powerstroke, not Ford), GM, and Navistar. The only problem was there was only 8 qts. on the shelf. :{ Seems like the only luck I have lately is bad. :{ At least my truck is fixed and running now. :D :D

Does anyboby know if this Mobil 1 comes in 4 or 5 qt. containers?? I'm due for an O/C soon. Thanks, John

Wally World here had it in 4 quart containers.

Otherwise I'm sure you can purchase it or Delvac 1, the same stuff in a different bottle, at a local Mobil oil distribuitor. I would check your yellow pages to see what you can find.

You might try a good sized truck stop too. I have seen some quality oils on the shelves at those places but usually at a premium price.

Well I did finally locate the new Mobil 1 stuff and see it would cost me $30. 00 more per oil change. Base on my 7500 mi. interval I would spend $800. 00 more over the length I plan to keep it. If I doubled the interval to 15K it would only be $400. 00 more but then I have to ask is syn that much better vs 7500 mile changes.

If it gave me a 1/4 of a mile more miles per gallon it would almost pay for itself at 15K.

I dunno...

When I was in the store about a month ago, they only had a couple quarts on the shelf. I asked an attendant if they had any more. He went in the back and got a couple of cases for me. :)

Yesterday I was in the store, and they had it in 5 quart containers. Oo.

Sorry Jeff, I did not read all the posts before posting this! You beat me to it!
