Terrible crash at Reno Air Races

I have an AR15 DPMS upper 1/7 twist 20" barrel . I had gotten a great deal on some Matchking 80 gr HPST bullets . Give me your take on these.

They wont feed through your magazine but will stabilize in the 1-7" twist. Is your barrel a stainless steel match barrel or a chrome lined milspec barrel?

Moly coated bullets are really very slick , BUT the Stainless Steel barrels must be cleaned regularly directly after use, before storage, especially in moist climates. The moisture can react with the molybdenum disulfide and create sulfuric acid compounds that can/will etch the bore. I have coated many bullets with moly and shot them through my rifles. It has its place but its not for everybody!

For your AR, a length tolerant bullet such as the 77 Gr. Sierra MK would be far more practical unless you are shooting long range slow fire competition in service rifle classification. IMHO, of 'course! Happy shooting! GregH

gharmon that was a very clear explanation. the throat is were most of the problem is, be sure to get this area good. i also use kroil along with the regular cleaners.

Thanks Greg I knew you would be the one to chime in . You are in the norm for what the other forums were saying too. One guy recommended using the next caliber up brush to run through the bore 15-20 times . Not sure if the whole program is worth it maybe i'll just sell them and buy the regular stuff. I will look at those 77's thanks Greg

Stainless steel barrels range in hardness from R-28C to the High end R-38C(H-S Precision barrels, If I remember correctly). 416 stainless steel(the alloy normally used for match grade barrels) is comparably soft and can be ruined by improper and vigorous brushing. Make sure you use a bore guide. Never use a stainless steel brush in any rifle bore!

I also use Kroil and nylon brushes for most of my cleaning. Butches bore shine and Shooters choice have been used as well as the foam bore cleaners. I only use a bronze brush on occasion.

P-bar, those 80 grain . 22 bullets would be perfect for a fast twist . 22/250:D!

An easy 3000-3100 FPS. I think the French Phrase is ; "Le Screamin' Zonk-aire":-laf:-laf:-laf. GregH

Greg you are the gun NUT on this site what are your thought's on this I have been using it for quite awhile now. NO NOT JUST BECAUSE OF THE NAME. But I used it and it really works good. Montana X-Treme

When I shot moly bullets, I used the Kroil/JB's bore cleaner and all was fine.

I had a DPMS DCM upper/barrel. SS barrel.

P-bar, you also may want to consider to get the chamber checked out to see if it's 5. 56 NATO or 223.

Not to ad more mud to the water, but it DOES matter if you think you'll ever be shooting surplus. Also, the 5. 56 chamber will be more suited to the 80's.

I use the 77's exclusively anymore.

BIGNASTY, I have a bottle and it works as advertised! Probably lean in that direction when the big bottle of shooters choice is used up.

Greg you are the gun NUT on this site
I think HHhuntitall has me beat in this category. He is THE GURU:cool:! GregH

I think is is . 223 but get your drift

That will limit you a bit.

If you could have a 223 Wilde reamer run through it the 80's would be more agreeable with it and you could run 5. 56 pressure ammo too.

I sell DPMS and they actually do not seem to pay attention to what they mark on their bbls. Stupid but that's the way it is.....

Yep, But yer the onliest one that fires a Crew served "CANNERN":-laf!

You measures yer powder by the !/4 Can per loadOo. ! Yer Son has to had you the bullet to seat in the case;):D! GregH

No both the kids will shoot the 338/378 (they dont like it). When they come up in a few days the Son shoots my Dad's 338 win mag. Win mod 70 and the Daughter shoot's Mom's 300 win mag. Cant wait it's been awhile sense we have been together they grow up FAST and have their own lives. I think Mom has something to do with them going hunting because they really didnt like it before. MAYBE THEY ARE JUST HUNGRY

50BMG Bolt action rifle! That was a longtime ago! However, I do not own one. Would love to, but theres no place to safely shoot one around here. To many people and the Ranges I belong to do not allow them because of the maximum range capabilitty in excess of 7 Miles(If I remember correctly).

If I could afford to travel to the NRA Range in New Mexico several times a year, then it would definitely be a project that I would love to tackle! GregH

Whats the hardest kicking rifle or most recoil you guys have ever shot?

600 Nitro Express. I think it was a Nitro but I do remember the 600 Express. I thought that my shoulder was broken for a week or two. The 338/378 that I now shoot is more than adequate for me. If I need more than it what ever it is im shooting can just EAT ME BUT IT WLL HAVE A FEW LEAD APPETIZERS FIRST M 79 GRENADE LAUNCHER COMES TO MIND ALSO

BIGNASTY! :-laf:D. I like the idea of "lead appitizers"! Dont ferget to spray yerself with pepper spray, first:-laf:DOo. !

I dont think I could handle a 600Nitro express even in my best years! The Muzzle Brake would have to be a big as a pie platter:-laf! GregH

12G both barrels at once was enough for me. :-laf

I dont get to shoot as much as I used to due to my health... . :{

As I'm writing this I'm building a new AR upper.

16" mid length Centurion arms barrel. (CHF M249 spec steel and chrome lining) In other words, it's rated for a life that will most likley out live me in semi auto. :D

Billet upper, M16 BCG, chrome bolt. Centurion C4 mid length FF handguard.

I'm also a bit busy on the mill I got a while back. :-laf
