Montana 5th wheel

The Montana may not be the best RV out there but it is the BEST selling rv in the USA and our trip to sunny and warm FL over the winter proved it in every park we stayed in.

With all respect, I see this touted all the time, but I'm not sure this proves anything at all. For example, McDonalds is the best selling hamburger in the USA. Does this say anything about value and quality, or is it rather a result of the effectiveness of their marketing and advertising efforts and the number of consumer outlets??

Furd claims its F series trucks have been the best selling trucks in America for 20 years or more also. Does anyone believe that Furds with diesel engines are the best quality, the most reliable, or the most durable?

How about a nice used 2005 Furd with a Navistar Sick. Ohh (temporary duty) diesel engine towing a nice used Keystone Montana fifthwheel built on a Lippert frame using ChiComm springs, mounts, axles, bearings, and brakes? Anyone interested?

The 'RV Weight Limitations' article posted by FPettijohn is a very good article with a few exceptions. You never want to take an RV salesman word as gospel. Most salesmen don't know what they're talking about. They only tell you what you want to hear.



This is why I've been so hard on Wertles. He has way too much 5er (43' long triple axle) being towed with a 3500 SRW shortbed. Also the manufacture of the 5er, which is Dutchman, has never been known to produce a quality trailer. It's too bad he didn't read this article or a copy of the RVCG before he made his purchase.

You're correct, nobody has claimed the HD with diesel was the best seller but Furd and Furd supporters sometimes make the broad claim that F series trucks are the best sellers. That may be correct also but I don't think Furd HDs with diesels are the best sellers and certainly aren't the best for towing, reliablity, or service life.

That's good reading there FPettijohn. I wish the closest RV dealer to me would read it. He puts the EW on the window of all his trailers and I've heard him tell buyers "yea you can tow that with your 1/2 ton, it only weights 8000 lbs. " The gvw on that trailer is close to 10K. One of these days someone's going to get hurt for stupid stuff like this.
Ford(Furd) does have the best selling 1/2 ton. Their diesels , after the 7. 3 ,suck. They have now built their own diesel engine. Time will only tell how these will fair. I'd still rather be cummins than strokin any day.

I agree. I see more Dodge/Cummins pulling 5th wheels and TT's than I do GM and Furd.

I haven't actually looked at the numbers, so I will just throw that disclaimer in. But, I dont buy that the ford is the best seller. The chev and the gmc are the same truck with a different logo. If you combine their numbers as one, I wonder what the results would be.

We've been to all four corners of the country, plus Alaska twice, in one of our RV's.



I will say that in Alberta and BC, Canada we did see more GMC (not Chevy) than any other HD trucks.



I've never done a count, it's just our observation.

I don't know if anyone caught the Chevy add on the NASCAR race Sat night where they ran all three big three trucks. They didn't show much of the Dodge as I think the Dodge was equal or better then the Chevy but did anyone see the Ford after the endurance run? The body & the cab did not match in fact it looked like the frame was bent. Harvey, I think you would look good in a new Ford (HA HA HA, just kidding Harvey).

Yeah, a broken down, disabled Furd Sick. Ohh and I sitting on the side of the road would be a great combination. I would probably pour a can of diesel or gasoline in it and walk away.

When a car manufacturer does research or debuts a new line of pickups it is ALWAYS in Harvey's back yard! When the transplants wanted to do market research it was in Harvey's back yard. Now guess who sells more pickups (all) in Texas, think of King Ranch.

Don't know when you were last up here in BC, George, but in my travels from the greater Vancouver area to 100 Mile House, I've noticed 50% Dodge and 25% each Chev/Ford.

The last time we were there was in 06. At that time it appeared that there were more GMC's than Dodge, Chevy or Ford.



The first trip was in 95. We broke down in 100 Mile House. My 5th Wheel broke an axle. The garage we went to for repair on a late Friday ordered a new Dexter axle and brake assembly from Kamloops. They had us park behind the Auto/Truck Shop, I can't remember the name, until the new axle and parts came in, which was the following Tuesday or Wednesday. They let us plug into AC and Water at no charge. The shop did an excellent job of repairing the trailer and didn't charge us very much. We were treated extremely well by the repair shop and the town folks. We had a great experience while in 100 Mile House. We stopped to say hello on our 06 trip.

A fellow RV'r broke his Montana frame towing with his F550. They fixed it, then he sold it. He's now got a Gator, and air bag hitch. So far, so good he says.
