Hello, first post, long time TDR reader.



Have a new 03 3500 4x4 dually with factory step bars. Looking at the mud flap options. Can some one tell me how the rear mud flaps install? I'll probably go with the molded ones for the front like I have on my 98, unless there is something better. I read about the front rubber kind, but do they protect as well as the hard plastic types? The rear flaps are $42, front $36, does that sound right?



Suggestions? I used the search feature and found some info on older threads. Are there any more choices now? I want the rubber type for off road use in a farm setting. :p



My chrome bars get covered with mud quick. I'm trying to get the flaps on before the rock chips grace my paint. I waited to long with my 98 and did not realize how quick the paint can get damaged. :eek:

I like mine. They are the Dodge brand and I bought them at the dealership. Several years ago (1995, I think) they were about $75 per pair, I think. That may have been the price for both pairs, though. Check with a dealer. I don't have the part number.



If you go with these, get the flaps for the 4x4 even if your truck doesn't have 4WD. (I see from your signature that it does, but this is in case someone else needs the info. ) The 4x4 mud flaps are a bit longer and will protect the truck better.



The flaps are two-piece units. There is a relatively stiff plastic part and a longer, softer flap. The two pieces screw together with the supplied screws and then the unit is screwed to the edge of the fender. They look very nice, and seem to do a good job of keeping the bottom edge of the truck body relatively chip-free. I still get some tar and mud, and even some chips, but it's much less with the flaps than before.



There are several other makers of mud flaps, but I don't know of any that will go on the front fenders as well as the rear. I'm sure you'll get some replies about them. You can also see what Geno's has in the catalog.

Take a look at the Cummins flaps I put on the back of my truck in my gallery. They work very well. I put some plain black flaps on the front that I got at a camper store, but I think I want to go a little larger as some of the debris misses them and hits the rocker panels. Sorry no pics of those yet. Good luck.
 
I wish I had my new Geno's catalog. I may just drive up and see what Andy has. I hate to drive on gravel roads with a new truck getting chips.



I guess the cummins flaps just screw to the wheel well liner, no brakets?

I believe I used some of the screws that hold the liners to the fender and then a couple 1/4" screws on the inside, attaching it right to the liner itself.
 
Just a point to consider about the Mopar splash gaurds - the part that wrapped back behind the wheel well ate right through the paint on mine. All four locations. :eek: Even though I'd put them on myself, I purchased them with the truck so the dealer repainted it all under warranty. I have generic flats on there now. They don't have that "built in" look, but they don't eat paint, either.



I've considered going Line-X on the rockers, then putting the Mopars back on once there's a little protection for the paint, but that will have to wait until I take care of a few other priorities - like 35" tires... ! :D
 
I'm using the rudder Mopar flaps, good fit. I too had the molded type on my 98. But, no real rubbing problem. I used some better screws. They fit vey tight with stainless self tappers.



But, I still like the flat rubber type better.
