She finally let go today. It sounds like a spun rod bearing. It's really horrible sounding. Once I get it apart I'll post the pictures of the carnage that some of you seem to love so much.

I've been planning a ton of stuff for the rebuild. I had planned on buying a spare engine to build at my leisure, but now I have a little more pressure to hurry it up.

I wish cams weren't so hard to come by. I don't have a chance at getting a DD camshaft since I'm not going to crate my engine up there for the install. I called Enterprise today and they didn't want to sell me one either. Doug couldn't give me one single reason why one of their camshafts is better than my stock one. That's frustrating. I found a place to build one for me, but I'm going to have to spec it out.

I've got a lot of work ahead of me and I can't quite see the daylight at the end of the tunnel yet! The dream of more power and the cryo'd transmission behind the new engine are all that's keeping me going right now.

Why is eveyone so protective of cams?

I've never heard of so many starving vendors that won't sell parts to someone in need:mad:

I just don't get it.

Did enterprise give you a good reason why they wouldn't sell you a cam?

I'm thinking of o-ringing and camming next winter. At this rate it'l never happen.

Mark

Chris,

Are you going to copy the cam specs and start making your own and sell them for less?

We know you wouldn't

2 thumbs down to DD & Enterprise for thinking that.

See if you can sign a damn disclaimer saying you won't copy it.

Nah, shop around for another vender. See what Piers has or can do. :)

Call Piers, he DOES have cams, and would probably sell you one.

The whole idea of high performance camshafts irritate me. Our field of diesel performance is growing like crazy. Diesel performance needs are changing on a daily basis. Contact a camshaft supplier that grinds cams. They either don't do diesel or they are experts on diesels because they've built some camshafts for tractor pulling. You know, the kind that need a whole can of ether to start and get running. They idle at 1500 rpm and don't have a clue what it takes to reduce turbo lag. They've never dealt with driveability issues or part throttle performance. Yet they're experts. One company I contacted has one custom grind to sell me on and they don't even care about any of my other engine mods, or my desired operating range, or how tight my TC is or gearing/tire size. They didn't ask me a single question. But they've got a great cam for me. That's irritating.

So I'm digging out my engineering books on internal combustion engines and researching the tradeoffs for retarding and advancing each valve event and I'm going to do my best to spec my own cam. It may suck, but I'd rather try and fail on my own anyway.

I couldn't agree more. This has been hashed out in another thread, but I still think it is BS!!!!

Hey Chris

Boy if it wasnt for bad luck you wouldnt have any luck at all. Thats a shame all these problems keep hammering you. Thanks for the spring seat explanation, I think I know a little more now. If you need a hand give a holler.

I think we should keep hashing it out. CTDs have the most loyal fans with amazingly deep pockets as the signatures show. I don't understand why several vendors feel it is necessary to insult our integrity and intelligence.

#@$%!

I will speak out about this until the policies change.

#@$%!

I've spent 4 grand on parts alone since january and to have a vendor tell me that he doesn't trust me enough to sell me parts PI__ES ME OFF!!! #@$%!

I have DD injectors in my truck and advertise it regularly. I don't understand the lack of appreciation they show for our hard work and hard earned money.

If i'd learned of this before I bought my injectors i'd have bought BDs.

#@$%!

Chris, you didn't call me either :( You might be "old enough" after all.

I understand the honest Rammers being upset but I could go through examples of how a few rotten applies spoil it for all. It will take Lawrence a while to pay for the master cams made during engine camshaft development. Similarly, Piers has to pay for the master on his pump camshaft.

I know of a real good way to get 'em back for this I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER! Don't buy one! I am definetely not getting a cam from them. When the time comes, Piers will get that $$$$, not DD. #@$%! #@$%!

Yep was going to get DDIII's going to re-think that Purchase

It's a shame

I plan on doing a rebuild next winter, cam, pistons and what ever it takes to have an even more bad a$$ ram. But with all this talk of how a couple of vendors are treating us consumers, guess I know where I'm going.

Piers, He has always helped me when I've needed it. Very good dude to have help you out.

Good luck on the rebulid Chris, hope everything works out.

Chris,

Sorry to hear about more engines troubles for you.

What a drag. I wish I could help ya out somehow.

I cant say much on the camshaft issue except I would hate for someone to copy my cam and sell it for half the bucks after I spent time, money and energy getting it developed.

I wanna get into my shortblock next and make some rotating assembly changes (pistons, rods, crank, etc) and do some camshaft changes as well.

It never ends Bud. Good Luck

I agree Don, but if you were going to copy someones cam and had the technology and equipment to do so, would having to pull it from your engine stop you? It's not like they have a shop in every town or even every state... so what do you do pull your motor and crate and ship across the country? Wait if you could pull the whole motor couldn't you pull a cam?

RD,

yeah, I hear whatcha are sayin'. I dont know the answer here. Glad I dont sell camshafts either:D

DD seems to pick the customers or should I say the customers seem to pick them. DD's customers get to see the results of the changes they make and the added power from dyno results.

I cant think of anyone else who does this. The guys that have installed the cam, love it.

I heard something like 18 cam changes to get the thing developed. Cost and time alone must be outragious.

I guess I would have to protect it too, if I had developed it.

Im hearing that other vendors will not ship you cam out either, not just DD.

Removing the cam is a pain in the arse as well. Maybe they hope the cam wont be messed with after the install. I dont know.

Ill have to side with DD and Enterprise on this one.

Look at it like this... . Bosch and Cummins will tell you pound sand too for even the smallest tidbit of data on what they do. Ive tried with both of them and gotten little to nothing important yet.
