Howdy yall

Some of yall might remember me. I'm not totally new to the CTD world but fairly. I bought a 91. 5 D350 a little while back that needed a good bit of interior and paint work and is not driveable at this point and time. I have now sold that truck to my dad for me and mom a vechile to tow that Airstream trailer they hope to own someday soon. Hes a body man so it'll be easy for him to work on,even though I'll end up doing alot of the work on it to:p

Ok I went and looked at a 93 D350 CTD Dually today. Club cab LWB 2x truck. Mostly stock, cept its straight piped. The truck shows 238k on the clock. The truck has been painted, nice interior, tight steering and all that good stuff. Its got a awesome flatbed on it which I like.

The only thing I wonder about it is the 238k on the clock. Should that be a issue at all? I know a CTD will never really wear out if you just take care of it. But any help on this question?

The other things is,how about some general info on upkeep on these trucks? I was told awhile back a few general upkeep ideas about them but I can't remember crap:rolleyes:

What type of oil to use? Weight of oil?-

When to change?-

When to change fuel filter?-

Any special things to keep in check?-

Any certain things to do like additives to fuel or anything?-

I'm still learning all this stuff so please bear with me for being the dumba$$ here. Thanks alot

Jimmy

Jimmy,

I would say: if the truck seems well kept, the mileage is not too much. The Transmission, and Rear end, and Brakes, suspension as well, will show signs of wear first.

Heck my truck is worn. drivers side door needed plenty of work to get it to shut as it did when it left the factory.

transmission is loose, motor leaks oil, interor is shreaded and the cab has meny well placed dents. Crazy Speedometer is my biggest and unending challange as of yet.

To it's credit, it has no rust, and I wanted a diesel! In time I hope to get it all together to where I want it to be. Hey lust got in the way of a wise decision, but Don't get me wrong, I love it.

As for your other questions:

Oil 15w-40 (I run some type of oil sutable for fleet use CI-4 although there are newer oils out there I believe)

New filter, w/ oil change every 5000 mi

fuel filter at 10,000 mi or so

Additives for fuel waxing/gelling only in the winter

I try not to get too compulsive with maintance, but that is a battle hard to win. I have to remind myself that it will never be a Rolls Royce, or for that matter a '56 B300, or anything else which is going to see it's value Rise dramatically in the near future, so I take care of it, and smile every time it comes to life.

guess that may be more that you asked for. Thanks for listening

Jason

I agree with Jason, 240K isnt much if it has been taken car of. I bought a W250 with 225 on it, traded it 15K later for the 91 I have now, both had 241K. Mine is still going strong. Too strong sometimes. The CTD will go 500k if you run it hard and put it away wet every night.

Oil- CI-4 is the latest rating. ALso make sure you have the S_ rating. Latest is SL, but the book calls for I think **? We have ot have that for something to do with the cam and lifters.

Fleetgard Microglass (LF3552) or Stratopore (LF3894), or Mopar OR WIX. Stay away from the $3 ones; they aint worth it in the long run.

Fuel additives- I disagree, to a point. I use it year round. Most add lubricity, which our old pumps need all they can get. They also clean out injectors, and help disperse water. Do a search, and you'll have plenty of reading.

No additives in the oil. Aftermarket additives can interfere with the additive package in the oil itself. (Oil is made of a base oil and additive package, which is usually proprietary)

I cant go 10K on a fuel filter. I change it when my MPGs drop dramatically for 3 tanks, or I have a big drop in peak boost/ EGT, running issues, etc.

Daniel

Yes. What they said.

I also use a lubricity additive year round, and change to one that has anti-gel for the winter months.

I go a year on a fuel filter... that might be 15 K.

The engine will be fine at that mileage..... it's the rest of the truck that will wear out.

My son is doing a conversion now... using an engine with 275K from a truck that wore out.

Good luck.

The only real problem with the truck is the rear main oil seal is leaking. He said it is leaking pretty good but isn't just pouring. So this will be a thing to get fixed ASAP. I'm gonna find out about how much the seal is,then see about gettin our good friend to put it in. Any other things I need to do or need to know about em? It needs stacks though

Jimmy

Everybody's right on with their suggestions. Even though the steering feels good, I'd still put it on a lift if you can and check ball joints and general front end health. You might give the steering shaft a wiggle and see how it's doing -- one of mine finally got too loose to stand -- just ordered a Borgeson replacement.

The rear seal isn't that big an item -- I had a shop do mine for $200 out the door - has been fine for 15k miles.

After you get it you might want to bleed the brakes 'til you get clean fluid. If it hasn't been done recently, repack the front wheel bearings.

Otherwise, it's just like the guys said -- our truck are 11+ years old -- stuff wears out!

I love mine! :D
