I am kinda new to tyhe turbo diesel game but i anyway i have a 99 2500 and this is being posted for a friend with a 95 2500 he is curios on what are some inexpensive ways to get more power from his 95?

The cheapest way is going to be to install a fuel plate and gauges. As to which fuel plate, does he have an auto or 5-speed?

Does he tow heavy alot?

How much power is he looking for?

Gauges and a fuel plate don't have to cost more than about $400 and will put a smile on his face.

I've seen used plates in the Classified section from time to time. But if your buddy buys a used one, make sure it is a TST plate.

I have a '95 2500 with a #6 plate and an Auto. I bought it used with 57,000 miles on the Odom. It towed a 5th wheel TT before I got it, with an essentially stock Automatic. Anymore plate and I fear I would have to go with a bigger turbo, or produce more smoke, which I don't want to do. I did also bomb the Automatic at 107,000 miles. Now it is a GREAT truck instead of just a Really Good truck!

Best thing you can do and cheapest is to replace your stock air filter with a K&N canister type filter. I used a cheby 350 K&N filter, took the top off my filter box and fastened it to the base of the stock filter box. Works good until you get the money for the correct filter housing. Second is to adjust your AFC star wheel forward, good free power. Third, remove your waste gate from the turbo and install a Turbo Master adjustable waste gate, works reel good.

The filter and the Turbo Master will run you about $130. 00. These three things will make a great improvement and will not break the bank.

When money permits ,Gages, free flowing exhaust,#10 fuel plate 3K GSK would be the next things to do. It will do wonders for your Buddy's truck.

I did all this to my truck, and i believe it runs as good or better than a new H. O. :D

Just did this to my friend's '95 with upgraded automatic...

1. gauges

2. fuel plate

3. 4000 gov spring kit

4. 370 injectors

It's just not the same 'ole truck!

If he can't do it all at once, do it in the order listed.

Trent

If $$$ is an issue, do gauges first and then a 3K GSK. Piers advised me not to install the 4K until heavy duty exhaust valve springs were in. Most bang for the buck is a GSK.

datablitz,

Everything works together great! My friend had put a BD #8 plate in before anything else. With the stock airbox and filter the egt's were high. When the headgasket was replaced we added the 370's and an aFe air intake. With the plate full forward and pulling a 28' trailer @ 80 mph the egt's were not a problem. When the gsk was added it made a HUGE difference! No problem with starting, just a slight white haze of smoke at idle, some black smoke at WOT. The timing was set by a Cummins shop and is probably at 13. 5*. The next tweak is to set timing at 15. 5* which should reduce or eliminate idle smoke. I tried to talk him into the TST #10 originally and he is considering it now. The governor arm was hitting correctly without adjustment. There is also no stutter anywhere in the rpm range. This thing will probably need delivery valves soon!

DSiemens,

We put the 4k's in knowing that we could back out of the throttle if needed and there has been no need to. Top rpm is 3500. We can always install the heavy valve springs if the new mods make the valves float.

Trent

Some guys install the 4K GSK without knowing about valve float. I see that you are one of the informed/knowledgeable guys. I can easily exceed 3100 RPM with the 3K GSK. I have a ported, o-ringed head on the 95 Ram. It does have the 60 lb exh. valve springs. I meant you no harm.

Just checked around quickly, piers, TST, and City Diesel all have internet prices that come up to "around" $400 for boost, EGT, and plate kit. The original post didn't say auto or manual so I didn't make any allowance for a transmission temp gauge.

I have been down that road. When you do all of the free stuff, it may be easer to go the other way. Buy the gage's, #6 plate, without the governor kit, use the governor kit and 10# plate.

I had poor mileage, so I bought a snap-on timing kit and set the timing up to 17. 5 . That is the only thing that gave me mileage... . However I slotted the stock fuel plate and slid it forward and modifed the afc housing to gain more rack travel. After that I couple of governor clicks, gained a little rpm, and installed a KN air cleaner. All of the free stuff works but it was not enough and looking back it was just a learning experience. PM me if you wont to know how to do the free things as they were told to me. I have a automatic so I stopped with the plate and did not install a set of injectors. I have to suggest installing some 181 delivery valves if you are going to install any injectors larger than 215. good luck jim
