I know this will probably have as many different answers as there are posts, but here goes. I have a stock '96 (I bet you thought there were none left) that has become in need of more power to pull our new 5th wheel that weighs more then our old travel trailer.
The question is ,
Which power enhancement is best and why??? Let the wars begain.

Stage 1
The least expensive hp increase is a TST cam plate. Get the 230hp 605 ft. lb. torque one & thats all you have to do.
Stage 11
Want more, now the trouble begins #ad
Bigger cam plate, bigger injecters, bigger turbo housing, better converter, better valve body, bigger exhaust, gauges to moniter it all.
And if the power bug bites you #ad

Stage 111
Better pump, new turbo, bigger yet injecters, upgrade the whole trans... . you best stop at stage 1 or 11, other wise you'll be getting a scourge put in front of your name #ad

I agree go for stage 1 and please look at that exhaust so that there are no restrictions like a cat, and stock muffler. Nothing wrong with a straight 3 inch. thru pipe. It's cheap. Just a few cents worth. Stephen's won ton dually in Sanger CA.
 
tst plate is the easiest way to start, cheap and provides exactly what you ask for.

I forgot to add that I must be able to pass Washington emissions no matter what changes are made.

The TST#8 plate (230hp/605lb) is highway certified. The higher hp plates are not. You should be able to pass the emissions test, otherwise you can reinstall the stock plate when you have to take the test, unless they do random testing. If you change the plate yourself, after a couple of times you should be able to do it in under an hour.

I installed the TST 230-605 plate myself in just over an hour. I have a 95 2wd auto with 95,000 miles and tow a 24 ft trvl trl. The towing performance is outsanding and I still have my cat and stock exhaust. I have towed the vantage grade on I 90 west bound at 65 mph from bottom to top with out getting over 850 dgrees on the pyro and had to back out of it because I dont like towing faster than 65 mph. This is the cheapist horsepower I have ever bought. I know this sounds like an addvertisement for TST but it isn"t.
