First, all praise to the group. Made a few adjustments per info here and great results.

I got the pyro (won't go to zero but that is anothe post) and the boost gauge and now looking for a tach. reading here they seem to be a problem to get working right. Any advice on type or brand?

Can a gas tach be modified for diesel? I know they run off the dist on a gasser, but. . ?

To show how new I am to this, I went on ebay and saw a listing for "US Marine tach" and since I was in the Marines a while back I thought, ok check it out , oh,ok Boat supply stuff.

Thanks any info.

Marine = boat stuff = gold plated (high price) ... . perhaps that's why YOU were drawn to it???

:D

OK, bad joke.

But most marine tachs work off of alternator pulses via an "R" terminal. Our alts do not have this terminal, but you can create one by connecting a wire to one of the rectiier leads located inside the back alt cover... . read the post a few days ago started by bgilbert for details on how to do this.

I went with this style because before I bought the Isspro model R85220 , I had a spare old boat diesel tach that I rigged temporarily.

You can also buy a tach that will use a sensor that clamps to the outside of the alternator.

Another option is one that comes with a bolt on crankshaft sensor.

So you have some options... unfortunately a gas engine tach isn't one of them.

Hope this helps.

JGolden, on the pyro issue, depending on the type, I have mine powered by ignition powered wire. It gets its power only when the ingition is in the start, run position. Once I shut the truck off, it drops to zero.

[Can a gas tach be modified for diesel?] Maybe but you dont want to use it. Our 5. 9 only revs to lets say top of 3K+-, most gasser tachs are higher than this, so you would only be using a small portion of the tach. I'm using Isspro's 3 3/8" alternator tach pn R85220R- its a 4K rpm tach-with a red pointer ha Jay!! Easy to hook up once you've been enlightened by Jay... You can buy these tachs from a local diesel shop or from one of the TDR vendors, they might not have it in stock, but if they are a Isspro or whoever brand dealer they can get it. Bill
