The other thread on this subject was closed while I was posting. I felt strongly enough to start a new thread.

We shouldn't let these forums degenerate into an exchange of personal attacks. It is only motor oil we are talking about here and we all believe the mighty Cummins to be a fine product or we wouldn't have a reason to correspond. Isn't that enough common ground to avoid personal attacks?

Don M and I have corresponded via private messages over the past few days. He was very straight with me and I appreciate his blunt honesty. We both discovered we have common ground in many areas. I would be first in line to shake his hand at a TDR event.

This does not mean anyone must give up their right to disagree with what he says. The free exchange of information is what makes these forums into the resource that they are. There are some that believe that adding an HX-40 turbo is the only way to go. Others do not. Some like the Bosch 275 injectors, others, DDIII's. To each his own.

I, for one enjoy reading about everyone's experiences with their trucks, different product experiences etc. It is a large part of the reason I visit this site so often. I would hate to see that change for any reason. Lets agree to disagree and keep it civil and somewhat polite. We can disagree with someone on many subjects and still call him friend. :)

That sounds very good to these ears.

Let me be the first to apologize to Briar on the last threads and hopefully put the whole bad fellings generated behind us.

I dont get off on personal attacks anyway. I have a opionion that may not be too popular with others, but when its all "said and done" we all agree on something like Riflesmith said.

Im not uptight at anyone and hope that Briar will accept my apology. That goes for you too Gene. I have never had a personal problem with you at all either and Im ready to bury the hatchet. I still think your a daisy Gene.

Don~

Well said Riflesmith, I agree wholeheartedly.

I would like to point out that the guys that seem to have the most trouble getting along are all men that are quite firm in their convictions, so firm that friction has developed. Gene, Tom and Don (and others as well)have all exhibited the character that most all of us look for in a friend, stolid stick to your guns kind of guys with a firm belief in right and wrong. Seems that we (I am as guilty as anyone) have been all wound up over a few details and OPINIONS that we have failed to see that the traits that we admire are what is pi$$ing us off.

I would like to see a discussion without urination confrontation on oil. I am not going to hold my breath, but I do have faith that the major players in the matches are big enough men that this can happen.

Maybe some application of Baby Oil to the wounds will heal every one! Anyone have any opinions on what brand of Baby Oil we should use?

Excellent words, Riflesmith, as always. Thank you. You too, Lsmith, that's very perceptive of you.

I apologize to all involved for my heated expressions, including Don. And accept his apology.

Amsoil has a food grade grease, that could be substituted for baby oil, I believe it is the mother of all food grade greases.

I prefer to call it engine oil, Riflesmith, not motor oil. Why is that?

I'll lay off Don, as long as he keeps the unnesassary cheap shots down on Amsoil.

And... ... ...

I just picked up some Delo 400 at Wal Mart for Dads Cummins, and the word "certified" is no where on it.

We are going to take the big risk and put in anyway.

And a Carquest filter!!

Does it have the 'donut' on the bottle or not?

Brian

Brian,

Yes it has the API donut or at least it has the API license.

I have found that some bottles just dont have the donut at times. The last bottle of Delo I looked at was a one gallon size and the donut was there. The one quart bottles next to them sometimes dont have them. Kinda strange to me. I also found a bottle of Rotella that it was not on and right next to it a neighboring bottle did that was the larger size. Not sure whats going on with the labeling.

Im very confused as to why Gene would want to install Delo for his Dad and not Amsoil. Maybe you can explain it to me Gene.

I do know that Delo is used by Dave Mitchell in his pulling truck and is drained weekly. Maybe Genes Dad has a puller too

The list of oils that Chevron has decided to license is very extensive and covers a ton of oils.

The word "certified" is not on it. The word" certified" is on a lot of the other oils, inside the donut. In fact ,they brag about it, front and back. Like it is the only thing they have going for them.

Tricky wording to me.

Explain to me why some say certified and others don't?? new labeling? What is goin on here?

Dad plans on selling that truck Don, and did not want to spring for the good stuff. That is called qualifying the customer.

I will be running Delo on my break in, maybe 10,000 miles, we will see.

And, I have always said, I would use Delo if Amsoil was not available.

:D

I guess I would consider buying the truck from your Dad as long as he used an API licensed oil in it. That way I would have the assurance the oil used at least met a minimum standard.

Others oils would not be able to assure me of this and I would have to take my money elsewhere.

That is called qualifying the vehicle.

Gene, since you are an oil specialist I would have assumed that you know the oils that are or are not licensed by the API or least the diesel ones.

Using the logic of not using the more expensive Amsoil in your Dads truck that is to be sold off early would you still apply this to guys who either lease their trucks or guys that trade out of their trucks every few years or so? Is Amsoil just for fellas that want to do extended oil drains? A practie I have found, IMO to be not the way to go. Remember I said, IMO.

last question, why are you and other oil guys running dino during break-in? Waiting to change to synthetics until 10 or 20K?

I think I know the reason, but that is long since past with todays oils. Dino or Synthetics.

Don~

Don reinforces an earlier point of mine:

"Using the logic of not using the more expensive Amsoil in your Dads truck that is to be sold off early would you still apply this to guys who either lease their trucks or guys that trade out of their trucks every few years or so?"

Since at the average rate, nation wide, of 12,000 miles annually on our vehicles, AND with 400,000 miles or so in the lifespan of the Cummins on dino oils, the vast MAJORITY of us will be "selling our trucks early"...

Does the REST of my logic escape anyone... ?:p ;) :D

Or shall I spell it out - AGAIN... ?

========

Gary - with 117,000 miles and *10 years* on my '91...

Only about 30 MORE years 'til I'm ready for an overhaul...

Dang - wish I'd used synthetics - I mighta got 5 MORE years outta the 'ol girl... :p :D

This is all for fun and entertainment guys - let's NOT allow a thin film of oil to damage our camraderie and united front against those misguided owners of OTHER brand trucks!:p

Amsoil says you can run it right off the showroom floor. You can.

I say don't.

I plan on draining that Delo at about 500 miles, and putting new in.

Then, I am going to watch carefully for LEAKS, and, should any occure, fix them before I put in the top shelf oil, the one that exceeds API specs.

Heaven forbid, something is really wrong, and it needs tore down again I don't lose my good oil, the one that exceeds API specs. .

Same thing on new cars. We, of all people know, that sometimes, things just are wrong on new cars.

Dealers have a habit of changing oil when cars come back with a few miles on them, and once again, your good oil, the one that exceeds API specs, is drained and lost.

I also like people to get used to the way their cars drive, start and fuel mileage, so they see the difference.

Some guys still think the rings need broke in, but that is old news.

As far as buying a used Cummins, any off the shelf API Certified15w-40 changed between 3000 and 7500 miles , or a high quality synthetic that exceeds API specs, with samples taken in an extended drain system would be fine by me.

I know I guy that would take engine oil samples would take care of the rest of the truck.

All of the above, MHO

How exactly did this get turned into another back and forth twisted panty pi$$ing match? There is no point anymore, get over it both of you, PLEASE.

I think it wil be easier for everyone if the word Amsoil was replaced by ****** that way you couldn't tell if I said this ****** is some good **** or I hate this ****** it made my truck leak **** all over the ****** driveway :D

Part of my reasoning to NOT do extended oil drains is in the following oil analysis from the Ford Taurus website.

No, I did not post any negative comments on extended oil drains or API stuff there. My internet traffic is mostly here, Ford-Diesel and the Diesel-Central site.

I dont own a Taurus anyway. This oil analysis is quite disturbing to me because the oil was degrading and I mean fast from the water in it. Im not sure what the outcome was. the oil analyzers suggested the EGR was malfunctioning. To Amsoils credit the oil was still protecting the engine from too much wear, but a little longer on the cycle and he could have had a disaster on his hands. Further at 15K the oil was sheared right out of specs on the viscosity. Another reason I get nervous about extended drains.

From past experience, water in the oil is USUALLY evidenced by the oil turning "milky", or displaying other quite visible characteristics - why is oil analysis needed to tell when coolent or excessive condensation is affecting your engine oil?

Doesn't anyone bother to look at their dipstick any more?

LCSmith - don't getcher panties in a bunch:D , everyone's behaving themselves...

So far... :p :D
