Been looking for a bike on a budget. Found a 1986 Honda VF 500F. From the pics it looks very good, slightly faded but thats all. 35K miles, owner claims it runs well. They are asking $1200. 00

Any advice would be appreciated.

If it's even had a basic attempt at regular maintenance, the engine would be in good shape at 35k. You really have to work to kill a Honda (I was a parts manager at a motorcycle shop in a past life). So if it runs and the plastic is all there and in good shape, the price is worth it.

The only real downside is that the 1986 parts will be drying up if they haven't already. Normal wear items will still be available, but body parts will be gone. I ran into the unobtainium body work problem while I was trying to get some new shiny parts for my 89 Honda Transalp.

If it looks and runs good and is straight, that would be a good buy. Offer 'em an even grand.

Where did you see this bike, on eBay? If so, make sure you have some sort of escape clause if the bike isn't what you expect so you don't get stuck. Check the carb mounting flange(s). These are usually formed rubber, and in time will start to crack & leak, causing the bike to run bad. A little pricey to replace, IF you can find them.

Some site called BikeZ. biz. I would fly to florida and see/test it before any $$ would be exchanged. I have been advised to look at the nighthawk S as well.
