 How is that possible? Either you are driving with eggs under your go-pedal or your Comp box is not working!

:) Ok for all of you guys running with your cruise control and working your mileage figures. How many of you, when cruise is engaged notice that your speed will surge up and down by 2 to 5 mph. If so I have a fix that will take care of that. My speed when set with cruise will not vary by more than 1/2 mph and usually less. -Wally-

"I have NEVER had a tank compute over 20 mpg. I've owned six of these CTD's and have driven both like grandma, but most of the time like I'm late for a hot date. "

You guys with the 4x4's just don't GET it do ya!:p ;) :D

Ya go adding the extra weight, the additional driveline losses from those 4x4's - and THEN still expect to get the same fuel mileage as the 2x4 guys...

AIN'T gonna HAPPEN dudes!;) :D

Read back thru the above posts, and see what the fellas complaining about fuel mileage are DRIVING - *4x4's*

Do ya GET IT now? :p

There's a PRICE to be paid for all those fancy, power-draining extras - and usually it's directly related to fuel mileage... :D

There Ya go AGAIN

Gary: please do a search on "mileage" or 'Fuel Mileage'. Read all the posts by 4x4 owners about mileage. Both 12v and 24v.

THEN voice your [then] educated opinion.

People have been posting 4x4 mileage in the 20's for the last year that I've been on the site, and I always discount the 2x4 mileage claims. If I didn't I'd be comparing apples to oranges.

Apples to apples: many 4x4 folks say they get 18-19 around town, and 20-23!! on the highway. From my standpoint the drivers must be on valiums to drive that sedately!!

Or they only drive on days when they will have tailwinds  Or maybe they only go to destinations at a lower altitude!

Hell I don't know how they do it, but I sure can't! And this is after [as I stated above] having driven six of these CTD Dodge trucks. [ stick shift, 5 and 6 speed, automatics and 12v and 24v. ]

I'm aware [as are the rest of us] of the difference between a 2wd challenged truck and a 4x4 truck. [weight, drivetrain drag wind resistance etc. ]

Please read Mundgyver's post

Where I live I can go downhill for hours. I still have to go back up hill to get home;) I just tested a tank full of gas with fuel additives and I got 13. 9 mpg. Now I can't say I drive like a granny all the time but I was easier on it for this tank. I did haul horses three times on the tank but only for a net of about 150 miles. I ran around with the comp on 1x3 for the whole tank. I never exceded 100 mph( unless there was a tailwind) and I tried to go with the flow of traffic. There was one time I went to level 5x5 but I had too. The service manager for the local DC stealership, Who has tried repeatedly to fuc me, was crossing the street. I let him have it full throttle, Lets just say it was worth the 1or2 mpg loss on a tank... ... .

By the way, I was wondering if there was a way to find out a way for the change in mileage from larger tires. I would like to add that into my lcomputations. 265 75 16 up to 285 75 16.

I was CGVW of 13,000 lbs and got 15-16 mpg going to Memphis/Rockford. That was pulling a 2 axle car trailer with a Dodge Neon on it. We were flogging it on the way there. On the way back at 70 mph we got 17 mpg. The local fuel is junk for us in Northern Michigan. BTW on this trip I took off my bug deflector and mud flaps.

On a trip to New York I got two tanks at 20. 5 mpg! ;)

It's the driver

The big disparity between mileage results is mostly the result of the driver's style, with a dash of truck differences thrown in.

I regularly drive from home to Metro airport, it is about 65 miles one way, and about half is on two lane roads and through small towns with numerous stop lights and signs.

It usually takes me one hour to 1:05 to do the trip. What this means is that once I'm on the freeway, 80-90mph is cruise speed, with numerous blasts down the right lanes to pass the left lane hogs. It is rare that I don't have several 100+ mph segments.

The last tank computed to 15. 34 mpg. Which is phenomenal in my opinion. A 5. 9V8 gasser would have netted about 10 mpg and a v10 about 8-9 mpg for the same truck and scenerio.

I drive and love this truck for it's incredible power and response. No other vehicle I've encountered yet can match the 70-100 mph acceleration, the CTD has just soo much torque! The better than expected fuel mileage is just a bonus.

But when I back off and/or have someone in the truck with me, I usually see about 17 mpg. And to see 15+ mpg when towing is pretty amazing too.

If I wanted to save fuel I'd drive a VW TDI [GAG!]

That'll get ya 20+ mpg in my truck. I think the 265 tire size has plenty to do with it.

Leaving it at idle (AC for the dog), romping on it every takeoff, racing up the big hill every time, and ripping it down the backroads, I still haven't seen less than 17. 9! Same routes with no WFO = 19. 7.

I think there is more to it than "style". I only varied my consumption by 3MPG with two extremely different "styles" on same routes.

Mostly tire/rearend setups. My 3. 54 and 265's is like having a 3. 42 rear-end compared to 245's/3. 54. Or looking at it the other way, you'd have to put in a 3. 67 rear with 265's to get the same R's as 245's.

And I do think that some of these engines are a bit sippier than others.

It'll be interesting to see how the Bombs affect mine. Oo.

This is apples and orange

WadePatton, I really can't compare your 2x4 almost stock truck to my 4x4 truck with comp drag box and BD3 injectors. There is a HUGE difference in power and fuel. I have double if not more hp/torque than your rig.

My sport version came with 265 tires, and with the 900+ ft lbs of torque I have, I could run much taller tires even with the 3. 54 gears I have.

This is an example of big differences in trucks adding to the mix. I use all the power that I have virtually every time I drive, except when it is wet, then I can't get the power to the pavement.

greg L

yeah, I get that

I'm not trying to compare our trucks. I'm saying that with a stock truck there are more significant differences than driving style.

IOW, my truck will get 18-22 unloaded on my roads in the summertime, no matter who is driving it.

And some of these setups ain't going to get better than 16 no matter who drives them.

Greg sez:

Greg - BEFORE you take advantage of opportunities to be pointedly and publicly critical of MY opinions, as in the above, try to comprehend *I* am talking about AVERAGES - you and I both know exceptions DO occur - but for the vast MOST part, and on AVERAGE, the 4x4's will NOT get the same fuel mileage the 2x's do - for all the same reasons you then proceed to point out in the REST of your post...

AND, if my posts bother you - DON'T READ THEM!

I very much find personal confrontations distasteful - and prefer to nip them in the bud - this is the SECOND time you've seen fit to abusively criticize me personally in this group - and it's gonna STOP!

If you have something you wish to discuss with me, let's take it to Email - or if THAT isn't direct enough for you, try 707-448-5221!

Well

Let me say this about that.

I, like Greg, don't want to personalize things, but personally speaking-I've read about 10 post to every one I've made. And my tally is just over 100.

So I tend to think that everybody on here has read many more posts than they've made.

I'm sure there are exceptions.

Smoke in Peace--but not quietly;)

Wade - like those you mention, I read FAR more than I post - both HERE, and in several other truck-related groups I am a member of. The measure of a user's value or credibility is NOT measured purely by his post count, but by the content of what they contribute and the MANNER in which they present it.

I may well comment critically on an ISSUE under discussion, but I rarely attack an INDIVIDUAL unless provoked - It's in poor taste, childish, and defeats the group-oriented nature and spirit of camraderie MOST of these groups are designed to promote!

ON the other hand, it's not my nature to stand idly by while a would-be, self-appointed critic and character assassin publicly and boldly calls ME a liar and a cheat - which is what the guy above has now done to me TWICE!

There had better NOT be a THIRD time!

If someone chooses to challenge my facts or assumptions in any specific issue, and present their own viewpoint or countering facts - have at it! But if/when they aggressively cross over the line, and propose to shift their attack to ME personally - THAT is totally unacceptable!

I make posts and offer well-intended personal opinions based upon information I've received in life over my 65 years - and in material obtained from a WIDE variety of vehicle related sources - I may well be ocassionally WRONG in what I offer - but I certainly don't LIE, don't knowingly or intentionally CHEAT - OR make accusations about the character or integrity of others without dern good PROOF to back it up - and I would suggest that others who propose to criticize ME use the same scorecard!

In fact, I *insist* upon it!

That done, we'll ALL get along just fine!;) ;)

:D Wow wow

I've seen 24. 3 mpg with my truck running empty driving behind a semi at 60 mph.

Here is my mpg results from our trip to Calgary.

Accessories: 2000 2x4 24valve, TorqueDog box (same as the Power Puck), 275 injectors, 4" Jardine exhaust, 3. 56 gear, 5 speed

Towing: 10,000# of Jayco

Loaded with my usual assortment of tools and supplies (about 1000#)

Going out, over a 2100 mile stretch, I averaged 11. 35 mpg. Speed ranged from 65 to 80 mph, with most of it at about 65. We pushed some heavy winds part of the way.

Returning, over a 1527 mile stretch I averaged 10. 5 mpg. Speed ranged from 65 to 80, with most of it about 70. In addition to the 1000# payload, I was carrying 500# of rocks that Lucy... . errr... Mrs Doc decided to bring home from Montana. We experienced a lot of headwinds on the return trip, and I was hoping for tail winds :(

All in all, I was happy with the results, seeing as we didn't dally along. If I was retired and could take my time on such a long trip, I would have driven slower and gotten a lot better mpg. It sure was fun having plenty of power to run like that though.

Doc

As for the recent arguementive posts... I hope you guys are able to resolve you differences outside of the forums.

I think most of us realize that most of the posts here are by amature diesel hobbiests (our test equipment is not calibrated and the variations of setups are vastly different) but our experiences are fun to compare.

MY big FOOT

Gary, I left a lot unsaid, you filled it in. ;)

So last tank 18. 4--somebody has been on the LOUD pedal!:D

Yeah yeah, I know the loud pedal will get louder, smokier, and much more anti-MPG after the bombs. No need to :-{} about it. :p
