Competition quarter mile question

in all of the truck pulling going on with boggers, anyone one actually use them for mud drags. i have been mud racing here in wisconsin the last couple weeks and been coming close to winning. tracks range from 12" to 3' deep, sometimes it is a race for time and others it is a race for distance. the gassers are getting scared of my 7000lb. beast getting close to winning. a real crowd pleaser, who would guess a heavy, smoke blowing diesel in a mud race?

I believe that Adam (My6EatsV8's) mud dragged his truck a couple of times... .

He told me a while back that you can be really competitive with about 350hp at the wheels... which is really easy to do.

There are videos of his truck running in the mud a couple of years ago on the 'net... .

My buddy and fellow TDR member Jlatham has been tearing up the competition at the mud drags in Gatesville, TX. Last weekend they moved him to the modified class because they thought he was running propane (he's not, the guys are just to stupid to know where to look to find out if he is).

Cord,

That's some funny stuff!

Everybody around here has NO IDEA of the potential of these little six-bangers... . doesn't bother me any!

Matt

I never saw a diesel do very well at the mud drags. There were a few diesel entries now and then, but nothing serious, just stockers. There were a couple power stroke owners who thought they were going to take home the cash. A hot rod Cummins truck could really surprise some people though.

The tech people were stumped when they had to decide what class a diesel should be put in. They were looking for a place to hook up their vacuum gauge.

Go for it power grizz, smoke 'em. :D I should try it with my Dodge, but I'm having flashbacks of all the cleanup I did for nine years...

Here's a shot of "Mighty Mouse", a 510 hp/550 lb. ft. , 434 cid small block Chevy powered mud dragger. She's been parted and sold since I quit racing. :(

What's with the motion blur? You'd almost swear that the truck is hauling some serious a-- ..... :)

Very impressive... . good power for a Mouse too... . it shows!

Matt

my truck has 4. 10 gears. i use third high range when the track is thin and a drag race. when the pit gets deep i use second high range. second high is about 30 mph at my rpms and i dunno what third's mph is. i have 35"x16"x16. 5" boggers for street stock, and a set of 38"x11"x16. 5" boggers for super stock. gotta find a little more power to win in two weeks. gotta show those gassers who is boss. :D

Warm up that credit card by calling 604-888-4159... . the folks on the other end of the line will be more than happy to let you make some additional HP..... :D

Thanks Matt, with the alterations it took to post that pic, I surprised you can tell it was moving. :D It was a fast truck, and consistently won the class above what it was built for. Best time was 4. 13 for a 200 ft. shallow pit. Sure miss the way it launched.

Power grizz, how long are the tracks you run? Do you run single pass, side by side, or double elims?

With my old POS truck... . I think I ran a 5. 87 for a 150' pit... that could just barely pass for mud. I had NO launch technique at all... I just put my foot through the radiator in 4HI when the light turned green. Took 1st place in the 4/6cyl. class... .

The following year I took some VERY bad advice and used 4LO... the truck might have gone about 2'... if that. The mud was very deep that year and only a few trucks made it through. I was just happy that I made it to the starting line... . some trucks couldn't even make it up to run.

Live and learn...

Matt- I had the transfer case in 4low, period. Didn't even have a t-case shifter (less weight  ). Just depends on the engine and drivetrain setup. :D

RWallace- I ran Boggers on the rear and skinny tsl's on the front. This is the best combo in my experience. When Boggers first came out, everyone bought a set of four and slapped them on. Great traction, but they said they couldn't steer well. I think that's what led people to using two of each. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the skinny 38 x 11 Boggers though. IMO, Boggers can actually slow you down if you don't have the HP to spin 'em.

I won the mud drags out at may madness and I can tell you that the gassers were shocked. I had a set of 285/75/16 Coopers on the truck, but having grown up in Georgia I knew the trick to mud drags was simply wheel speed. Mark was riding with me on these runs and we were hitting the brakes long before we exited the pit so we would not hit the concrete wall.

usally run 200ft. tracks, single pass, but we can double run the truck with two drivers per class. some tracks are deep and some are thin. my other driver and i placed in the street class, and superstock class. 4th in both classes. that pit was for distance. it turned out that my other driver went first in each class, and i was at the end of the class.

he(other driver) plowed the ruts 3/4 the way down the track. everyone else got half way down before spinning down to their axles, execpt the high dollar racers who made it three feet farther than we did. then the modified(they just float on top) class went but the ruts still remained for the superstock class. he plowed the ruts deeper this time and the rest of the racers fell in those deep ruts. then i came through, with full steam and good traction(finally found bottom with the 38"boggers)and made it two feet short of first place. after i broke a stub shaft on the front axle. would've won if i hadn't broke.

Time to go to 35 spline stubs? :D I had to in my Jeep with Chevy Dana 60. I believe you can use the same Spicer stubs in the first gen Dodge Dana 60.

Got any pics of your truck & inline pump conversion? Sounds very interesting.

Power Grizz by any chance do u know Paul Mourscher? Cause i was talkin with him this week, and we were talkin about diesels... what else? and i think he brought up your truck and the mud drags... if not my bad, there must be another one in wisconsin, if so cool, sounds like u have one hell ofa truck :)

name doesnt ring a bell, but maybe a face would. last race of the season is on sat, in neilsville. a double show first at 1 pm and second at 6 pm. see if i break anything this time? any one know where to get dana seventy outer shafts reasonable?? and then a pull in jump river on sunday. will have pictures next week.

red rattler,

if you can come to neilsville saturday, pits are open to public,(they charge $7 for everyone i think, drivers and spectators), look for a first gen dodge with stacks, and PAIN & ANGER on the side, i will be near somewhere. FREE BEER after racing TOO.

jfitzgerald,

getting some pics this weekend if i can get some of the mud off, it gets into everything. radiator and intercooler are packed full. good thing not a gasser. i would overheat in minutes.

... and where to find a dana seventy front axle cheap, already tore out one ring and pinion and stub shaft!

power grizz, Cleaning that mud out of everything is fun, isn't it? And lying on a creeper under the truck with dirt falling in your eyes is the second best part. :D I got smart and started wearing safety glasses now when I'm under the Jeep. Saves the grinding on the eyeballs.

As far as a 70 front, I have seen them on ebay before, but I don't know of any lying around. I know a couple guys I could ask though. Or you could upgrade the 60 stubs - I got my 35 spline stubs (same as what comes in a 70 front) from a friend for $75 each. That's his normal price. They're brand new Danas. No one I know has been able to break one. I would think the u-joint would let go before the ring & pinion. Then he's got the CTM u-joints that are supposedly unbreakable. If you go the 35 spline route, I know a guy (in WI) who can re-spline hubs to match. Let me know.

Looking forward to the pics.
