I'm looking atpossibly going to a Mud terrain vs an all terrain Dunlop Mud rover's 285/75 or BFG Mud terrain does anyone have experience w/ these heavy lugged tires in snow and for highway use (vibration or whurrr)Yeah I know its tough to hear much over the Cummins. I do want at least a AT for the fair amount of off-road driving I do. Also do you think the heavier lug will affect fuel mileage?

I've used the Dunlop Mud Rovers and Radial Rover and prefer them over BF Goodrich. That's just my preference. The Mud Rovers work well in the mud. The thing I don't like with mud tires is the low life. I have not had a set last more than 10-12,000 miles whereas all terrains last 25-30,000. That is the experience I have had with them.

We have a store here in Indiana called "Big R". Kind of like a wal Mart and old general store and hardware store combined. They sell a mudder tire that is some off brand that looks awesome. I have had them on my truck now for 24k miles and several burn outs. Rotate them every oil change. Looks like they will last all winter. I will be getting another set at that point.

Keep em rotated and they will last much longer than what everyone else is seeing. Keep the burns down to a minimum.

I agree with Jeff about the mudders wearing faster - but I've got 30,000 on my BFG AT's, and by measuring tread depth, I estimate another 15-20,000 more. And I've been very satisfied with them.

I never had as good a luck with the mud treads in snow as one might expect. I have the Cooper Discoverer LT all terrains and they hae done very well in rain, snow, dirt, rocks, and the kind of mud I can find in central and northern Nevada--sticky and many inches deep, slippery too.

I feel comfortble recommending these tires for rain, snow, etc. but of course there are many kinds of mud. . .
Hope this helps
Joe

I have run the cooper discoverer, dunlop mud terrain, and am curently running the bfg mud terrains. All of these in the 255/85/16 size.
What I have seen so far is for packed snow and ice the discoverer is the best but wears out way to fast. The dunlop's worked great especially offroad. They also wore out fairly fast which I expected for an open tread tire. I tried to get the bfg ko's but the didn't have them in the right size so I went with the mudders. The best part about the bfg's is the 3 ply sidewall. Much better for cornering and offroad abuse.
For packed snow and ice an allterrain tire will give the most traction. In fresh snow, mud, loose dirt, and sand the mud terrains win.

i have run 2 sets of 33" cooper discoverer STT tires. i would recommend them to anyone. they are an agressive mud tire, much like the BFG MT. i got 18000 miles aout of them, probably could have squeezed 20k, but winter was coming and so was inspection!!! they are noisy on the road, but worth the trade off when off the road. you must rotate them often though, about every 5k, because the front ones will cup pretty bad if not taken care of.

<font color=blue>Anyone have any info on Parnelli Jones Dirt Grip tires? I saw them in the lastest issue of Off-Road (January 2001). They look like they have a decent tread pattern. I just haven't had a chance to find out the load rating or anything yet, thought I would ask if anyone had them????

Once I get the lift kit I may try the 36x14. 50x16 or maybe even the 38x15. 50x16 dunno, just the two sizes that would appeal to me, guess its time to dig up more info on them... ...

I know they are relatively new so I'll post my experience with Pro-Comp's mud-terrain. As of today, I have 28K mi. on them and they still have more than 1/2 inch of tread left. These guys are right about rotatating them. I've done it every 4K so far, and no signs of uneven wear, and I've been hard on them too(drag strip, mud boggs, 4-wheeling and showing-off). I'm still very happy with them. Anyways, just my $. 02.

The only thing I want to add is that A/T's IMO do better on icey roads than M/T's. If you live in an icey area, and go with the M/T's... . Get them siped... . It'll help.

I have used the Cooper Discover on Toyota 4 Runners for the last 12 years and have been VERY satisfied. With proper care and rotation I have been able to get close to 40K on them. We have a lot of sand and mud here in East Texas and we have made many trips to Colorado on Elk and Mule Deer hunts and have never had a problem on the ROCKS repeat many ROCKS and mud. When the Mich. wear out I will probably go back with the Coopers.

Ran a set of BFG Mud Terrains out and a set of General Mud Terrains out. BFG were much better off-road, but lasted 10-12K miles, town driving and off road twice a week. The General's were a harder compound, lasted 20K miles, but not near as good off-road.

I would say your trade-off is there. The longer that tire lasts, the harder the compound, and the less sticky it will be on and off road.

Both were scary on the ice/hardback snow typically found on roads compared to just about anything else.

Has anybody tried Toyo M54's or M55's?

Regardless of what you get, ROTATE them as often as you can. The front end is so heavy on our trucks. Friend of mine has the same amount of miles on his tires (another diesel dodge) and they are about shot because he only rotated them every 12k. Just a thought.

How you guys only get 12k miles out of BFG's I dont know. My 33x12 mud terrains have 26k on them and will easily go another 10k and thats being conservative because I wont drive on bald tires. These tires are tough, I have run them for hours at 80mph and overloaded them many times and never a problem. Keep them rotated and pump them up tight and they will treat you right. On the other hand if you dont need the mud lug I understand the all terrains do very well and last even longer.

Kat. I have seen these tires on a truck at the pulls 2 weeks ago, they were the 36s's and the guy said he really liked them, but they were on a late 70's Ford and they replaced a old set of bias ply ground hawgs so he was probably not a reliable source on ride quality or handling but they did look cool

We tried my tires (Denman Coyote LT305/85R16`s on stock chrome 16x6. 5 Dodge wheels, 36" tall x 9. 5" wide) on a STOCK unlifted 99 QC 4x4.

Rears fit no problem. Had to remove the molded Dodge mud flaps on the front. The tires would rub the flaps at turns.

With the front mud flaps off, we drove 15 miles. Tires did not rub. There is plenty of clearance on the lower front fender sheetmetal. Tires rubbed the plactic wheelwell liner at 3/4 turn coming into the driveway hitting a small bump.

A leveling kit should bring up and stiffen the front just enough so they won`t rub.

My buddy loved the ride. He said the transmission shifted smoother & quicker with the tall tires. Didn`t notice the vague steering I found with the tires. He LOVED the way the truck looked. Makes a drastic difference with the wheelwells filled. He noticed a little more tread noise, but no bad. This is not a real aggressive treaded tire. Great highway/street tire.

At 60 MPH we were turning 1500 rpms. #ad
.
That will probably kill the mileage though.

I will post some pictures soon!

PS: I`m 99% sure the "BD" truck seen in advertisements has the Denman Cotyote tire. The tread is exactly like mine. Note the tall sidewall #ad
