Competition Thunder in Muncie prayers

Truck Pulls:

I would hope that folks have the required pieces, but I have not started enforcing safety rules. That will change for next year. Tech will be looking for "unsafe" trucks, 5-6000 RPM beasts with no blanket are unsafe, turbos with no type of fender liner are unsafe. We just don't want shrapnel in the stands.

Drag Race:

DHRA rules apply. If you are running faster than 14. 00 you will need a helmet and drive shaft loops. You can go to www.dhraonline.com to see those rules.

i don't think i will need to worry too much about the 5-6000 rpm part, but if i'm lucky i will have a reason for putting the loops on my truck. thanks for the info.

Eric... I can't understand why we need driveshaft loops for 13. 99 and faster for Drag Racing? NHRA doesn't call for loops and a roll bar untill 11. 99 and faster. Please enlighten me... i have raced at tons of tracks in the 13. 0 bracket and I have never been even questioned about loops.

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

Jake

Jake,

The NHRA's rules are driveline retainer loops are required at 13. 99 for all cars running slicks and 13. 00 for all cars running street tires.

I have streamlined that to 13. 99 because of the amount of 4wd racing. I have seen a 20+mph difference from 13. 99 to 13. 00. The difference being highway speeds and over a hundred mph. Safety First!

I've been reading over the DHRA rules and I've got a question.

Can someone give me an idea of where to buy or how to build and attach a breather tube catch can with a 1 gallon capacity and stuff it in between the frame and front driveshaft loops?

I run around everyday with a catch can that's about 1/2 a quart. In the last 2 months of day to day driving I've accumulated about 2 teaspoons of oil in it. Now according to DHRA rules, I need a 1 gallon reservoir for 5-6 1/4 mile passes. I don't see how a 1 gallon jug is going to fit there. How is everyone else doing it?

-Chris

You saw that in the class rules? I will have it removed if it's there. You don't need it for either the street or modified classes. It's there for future use in the General Regulations. The class rules are what you concentrate on, if it says see general regulations, then you refer to the general regulations. Similar to the way the IHRA/NHRA rules are read.

Thanks for clearing that up!

I just assumed that I had to meet both class rules and general regulations.

Can I put my vote in now that as far as future rules go, a gallon is a little excessive. A quart or less should be fine for a days racing.

-Chris

I went with the Street Diesel rules and installed a normal size air/oil separator like Chris referring too on my rig also, figured it was ok, also installed a NHRA approved overflow tank for race day only, it holds about 1/2 of what the stock one holds but it's rules. One other thing do we need to tell the tech person exactly what our trucks have for safety items(remember reading this) on that day, or is it there job to know that! (calm voice..... I confused) If need be I will will walk them through my whole truck with no problem, just don't want to get DQ'd before the first run!

Thanks Eric your doing a great job with this stuff, now we just need money... :D

Jim

Better safe than sorry Jim! Some of the things that the NHRA requires for the overflow do not apply to the diesels. How many head gaskets let go and the oil comes out of the crankcase through the breather? And, if you do blow a head gasket pushing oil and coolant through the overflow, do you really think a quart is going to catch it all? LOL.

Tech has a check list, Jim all you really need is a helmet and drive shaft loops. And money. ;)

See you two in two weeks!
