Off Roading '76 CJ-5 question

Competition California truck pulls

So is there going to be enough trucks to fill the open class at mucie Gene or are we going to be allowed to double hook?

There will be more trucks there for the mod class then ever before. Hopefully, weather permitting, dialed in better than last year. The rain killed prior Muncie testing last year, thats why a lot of trucks performed poorly.

I doubt there will be 25 in the mod class, since there isn't 25 in the entire country.

We knew that when we set up the schedule, so at this time, no double hooks.

What do we know for sure? What trucks are not going to be there? Inquiring yahoos want to know.

If there are less trucks there this might help me in the long run but it is much less fun to watch.

Criag check this out. This was taken directly from EEP's web site

March 17, 2004

We don’t want the rumor mill to run rapid, so hopefully this letter will put a stop to it.

As for the 2004 DHRA Rules, they are well written for the most part. We do however disagree with the way the rules originated in general, and the rules concerning tube frames and fiberglass bodies.

We addressed our concerns about the rules with Eric and Gene, then we also contacted several veteran pullers. We are not trying to change the 2004 rules or place blame on anyone or any group, we just feel that the pullers who make up the class should have some input about the rules for the class.

We sponsor and respect the DHRA for all the hard work and effort they put into the events they promote. But, if we don’t stand up for what we believe is in the best interest of the pullers and the class, then we have failed our friends, customers, and fellow pullers. This class has grown tremendously over the last several years and we want it to continue to grow, but that will not occur if the pullers who compete in the class are not treated with the respect they deserve. Without the competitors there will be no class.

In closing, we regretfully inform you that we will not be attending Thunder in Muncie this year.

Respectfully,

David Mitchell

I saw it the other day but didn't want to come out and say it and **** someone off. I figured someone in the first 10 replies would post the letter. Matt

Gene:

Do you know why Dave Mitchell is not going to participate

at TIM this year??? Or what part of the rules he is upset

about??

Thanks!

Well, let's see if I can help you all understand what is going on.

In November Neal Murphy, CIO of the DHRA handed out "rough drafts" of the DHRA's proposed pulling rules to folks in Jesup, GA. That included EEP, Scheids and all others in attendance. I emailed the rules to Haisleys so that they would have them also. Haisleys and Scheids contacted us with minor concerns with cubic inch limits, exhaust rules, and Street Diesel turbo size limits. The Tech department acted on these suggestions and made changes. We never heard one word from EEP until the rules had been sent to SFI and approved. That is when we were blind sided by a person of which has never attended Thunder in Muncie as a puller. I contacted Dave Mitchell to ask what I could do and he suggested I call Erik Stacey and Paul Watson. Erik assured me that although we are going to allow tube chassis and fiberglass bodies that he was supportive of our rules and Thunder in Muncie. His concern was the money that could be spent building one of these trucks. I told him of DHRA's goal to expand the sport and we feel that we need to make the current set ups on these trucks the base of the class to encourage growth and performance in the diesel pickups. I also understand that the people that have these trucks have an incredible investment to protect and I am trying to get the sport to grow from where it is today.

When I called Paul I did not receive such a nice welcome as this guy is incredibly mad about us allowing the tube frames and fiberglass bodies. He had his mind set and I wasn't going to change it no matter what.

After much thought and conversation with the pullers, we (DHRA) sent out a proposal addressed to EEP, Haisley's, and Schied. You have read Mitchell's response already, but here is the proposal dated February 25th:

The three of you are who I know and respect in the sled pulling arena the most. So, I want to propose something that I hope will make things a little better for the Diesel Hot Rod Association's Pro Pulling Series and for the potential members. It is no secret that Paul Watson is generating a lot of noise about our rules and campaigning to prevent folks from participating in our sanctioned events.

Throughout some investigation, Gene Mohney, DHRA Director of Sled Pulling Operations, has learned the whole issue is the fact that we "announced" the use of tube chassis 4wd pulling frames in our rulebook. This follows the future goals of the DHRA and the sport all together, our vision and goals as an organization have not been thought of, only the personal agenda of one person which does not bring us any closer to satisfying the situation or growing as a recognized sanctioned motorsport. To "prove" to our participants our point (that a tube chassis truck isn't a clear advantage over a frame rail truck), we wish to amend our ruling on tube chassis. Here is our proposal:

All Tube Chassis platforms will pull exhibition during the modified class. This will give all of us the experience we need to make an educated decision. If the tube chassis truck does not out-perform (by distance) the first place Modified truck after two events they will be allowed to compete as a Modified Diesel. If the tube chassis truck does out-perform (by distance) the first place Modified truck at both events, a Pro Modified class will be immediately constructed to accommodate this platform. If the tube chassis is permitted in the Modified class and at any time during the DHRA Pro Pulling Series two or more tube chassis trucks dominate the class, a separate class will be created for this platform.

I wish to have a response from all of you on your thoughts by Friday March 12th. If you wish to suggest yet another idea, please cover the DHRA's goals along with yours. I also wish to have confirmation on your attendance to both Scheid's Diesel Extravaganza and Thunder in Muncie to verify your compliance with this proposal. Thanks for all of your support in the past and we hope to hear from you soon.

Scheid's response was that they would support any decision we made (obvious by their wish to run our sanctioning at the Extravaganza this year) and Haisley's made the same statement.

All of these posts about Thunder in Muncie and the stink a couple of people have made has done nothing but put a dark cloud above this whole situation and the sport of truck pulling. It has hurt alot of people's feelings and isn't pushing the sport forward.

Thunder in Muncie has a foundation built by the thousands of attendees. I will continue to grow the sport because of my passion for diesel motorsports. So please don't miss out on the greatest diesel show on earth just because someone (or two) plans on not attending. I promise a better show than last year! So let's get pumped again and ready to see the best of the best compete June 5th and 6th!

Thank you. Eric McBride

This has all gotten way out of hand.

In my opinion... ... ... ... ...

The BIG dogs from EEP need to be competing at Muncie.

If they don't its going to look like they are chicken to run against

Kent's (Scheid) truck.

Also, to Chris and Paul Watson.

I dont know why all the complaining is going on, your truck (F350/12v) is going to place high in the competition.

Easily a second place, and if Scheids breaks you guys will place #1.

To those who havent seen this truck run, it is every bit of 1000hp and more.

Besides, dont you want to show off that 100k hood stack at the biggest diesel event this side of the sun???

So to the EEP guys, show up and perform. Don't let us (bleacher pullers) down.

Thumbs up! to Eric and Gene laying it all out on the table for the masses to read.

What?

Why not? Drag Racing, Dyno, Show-n-Shine, meeting new people,, You can Meet people like Jim Fuller, Jim Fulmer, Richard Madsen, JetPilot, Piers Harry, Bill Kondolay, Peter @ SBC, Eric McBride, Clint @ ATS, Gene (aka Sled Puller), and tons of others,, including the chat freaks.

It's not all about What's happening, but meeting people with the same passion you have.

If Mitchell, or even all of EEP doesn't go,, it won't break my heart. Scheids, Haisley, and others will be there. I can see EEP pull on the internet.

We all know if I enter my truck, I'd win the whole deal anyway... ;)

Merrick

Merrick I will only be attending TiM on Saturday if I do go for the pulls. Yeah you are correct that there is many more reasons to go other than the one I specified. I met Piers last year, and man is he a trip :-laf. I would like to meet Peter from SBC since we've had many phone conversations :D, Eric... . well he and Daniel can't get off the dang golf cart long enough to talk to anybody! :p :-laf

Aww hell..... I'll be there Oo.

Oh and Merrick... . on your last comment... ... you forgot the "pass" in "puff, puff, pass" :p :-laf

Amazing... ... .....

If you check out rules for most pulling events... you will see a rule and that is: NO WHINING!

It seems that a certain group has not read that, or is being influenced by a customer that is doing that very thing.

Just my take on things... ... from the bleachers

I will definately be there no matter what. I could really care less if eep showed up. Everyone else around where i live could also care less about eep.
