My CTD pulled a big rig out of the mud and off some rocks **Pics**

Hey guys I got it done today, that’s right. I was at work when a fellow delivering some cars with a big rig got his truck stuck in the mud & high centered in a rock bed at the same time. I saw him get the truck & trailer stuck and ran over with my camera and keys to my CTD ready to assist. As soon as I approached the guy he warned me in dismay to call a service for him and insisted that my 2500 truck would not be enough to pull his truck & trailer out of the mud and of the rocks that he was high centered on. Any how I insisted that many of my fellow friends from this site (TDR) have taken on much more rigorous tasks with their CTD’s his problem should not be an issue at all. I then proceeded to pull my measly 5K lbs 30 ft tow strap out of my tool box and hook up to the front of the rig. The fellow asked if he should try to put it in drive or just leave it in neutral. I motioned to leave it in neutral and I would just pull him out of the mud and off the rocks, and to just sit tight. Anyhow, I jumped into my truck fired her back up and selected 4-lo for good measure. I barely gave it any throttle and the next thing I know my Cummins Diesel 2500 Ram is dragging the big-rig and the trailer with two vehicles on the car hauler out of the mud and off the rocks that it was stuck on with ease. I mean It seriously felt like there was nothing hooked up to the truck. The fellow even commented that he was amazed and could feel the torque of my truck pulling the truck. He was so amazed and began asking all kinds of questions and wanted to know about my truck after, I was so excited to be able to help and pull him out with ease I had to post it here and share the pictures. Sorry for the poor quality... .

Open Axle's will do this all the time - I mean

if that big rig had a "Locker" he could have driven off that "slight" mess... . But anyway - this was a great opportunity for you - being at the right place at the right time... ...

Nice work!

As far as lockers in big rigs, they are extremely rare. I priced them on the last truck I ordered and I think on an Eaton rear they are about $2k. Trucks with tandems like that are able to lock the axles themselves together but with one side completely in the mud, stuck is what you get.

Good job Ryan. I pulled a semi up an on ramp that couldn't get traction in the snow & had no chains. He was empty but still had a light weight of 30,000lbs & the ramp was steep.

I once had to pull out a neighbor that worked for JB Hunt  Parked his rig on the vacant lot across the street and got stuck in some ruts there, the more he tried to get out the deeper he went. That was with my ol' 93 W250.

Nice Pics... what size / type tires do you have? Which Fendor Flares? And do you have a leveling kit? Love the look of your truck!

I bought a 06 W900L and I added the full locking diff and it was about an $1100 option. I got it because of that exact problem.

I got some pretty cool pics (not digital) of my 93 pulling out a rig that was buried to the tanks in a field. It was a challenge from a chevy guy. He never did that again! Cool pics Ryan!

I tried and tried to get a car hauler out of the mud, and couldn't, of course, all 18 tires were buried to the rims, and I'm only a 2wd, on the same surface he was...

Good Job on that. You should have left it in 4hi, and atleast made it look like you were trying... . :-laf

Very cool! Good job Ryan!

I had a recent experience like that and wish I had pictures. We were up snowmobiling at a friend's cabin and on our wayback down there was a guy in a Pstroke trying to pull his enclosed snowmobile trailer up a steep driveway. It looked like he had made a run for it but the trailer dragged him into a deep drift and he was stuck good, trailer and all.

There was a guy in a DMax tugging on him but with the snow packed road he was not even budging the Pstroke. I hooked on to the DMax at an angle because I was on the road and he was at the edge of the driveway. He stayed hooked to the Pstroke. I put mine in 4HI.

The first pull I tried in 1st but not enough momentum so the second pull I put it in 2nd, cinched up tight, and let her rip. Turbo was screamin', snow was flyin', and when I stopped the guy in the DMax was  He had to get straightened out cause I dragged him through a snow bank but the Pstroke was out of the hole :-laf

I had to pull them both one more time to get the Pstroke over the edge of the driveway. The DMax guy said thanks but the guy in the Pstroke never said a word.

The best part was that the guy's kids I was with all said "We want a truck like that" :D

Sorry I'm late getting back to you all, but Giachino my tires are 285/70/17 BFG All Terrain TA K/O I definitely recommend them over the stock "Rugged Trail" road tire. As far as the flares go, they are OEM "Take-Off" Power Wagon flares. I work in the Fleet dept for a Dodge dealer and one of my loyal customers sold them to me for $75 from his new '06 Power Wagon, I think he said he was getting the Bushwaker units instead. Either way he bought three PW's for his fleet, I can ask him if he would like to part with his flares from any of the other rigs if anyone is interested. To answer your last question, I don't have a level kit on, but am currently looking into it soon. Thanks for the positive feedback, I love my truck a lot, and love selling them too!

I was just curious, what part of your truck did you attach the strap to take the load of getting him unstuck ?

Hey Roger/Dodger I have a very basic tow/ strap I got from Wally-World. I think it's 30ft and max 5000/ lbs capacity. I pulled the strap hook through the receiver hole and secured it with the receiver lock-pin (Masterlock) and used what looked like factory tow hooks on the Big-Rig. My truck suffered a bent lock-pin that I torched out last night and the tow strap is severely stretched and tethered in the center. No damage to my truck, receiver hitch or drivetrain. All and all it was one of the most rewarding, GET-R-Done feelings a man can endure Oo.
