I have a Calif. standard output and I too have the tick

thought it was a lifter but rythym not right so its my understanding the S. O. does not have j-jets so I would lean more towards the injector clamp

I will check mine this weekend

is that a for sure fact? that the SO does not have the J-jet?

There will be J-jets for the purpose of spraying oil onto the piston on the SO, but they will not be made to actually protrude into the piston like they do on the HO. The SO piston could be installed either way and there be no danger of the j-jet fouling on the underside of the piston. That's the way i see it anyway.

I know this is probably a dead thread, but did you ever find out what caused the tick? I have a '98 with a tick exactly like you describe (bought it with 100K on it, and the tick has always been there - someone told me it was valves, but the Dodge dealer said it may be a bad lifter)

thanks,

Matt

I just started noticing a tick coming from under the hood (75,600 miles), mostly when I get out of the pedal, sounds like maybe valve tappet noise though.

Has anyone used a mechanics stethoscope attempting to locate the source of the noise?

They are not expensive and can be found at Snap-on.

They have a long probe that can reach areas that can only be seen.

You can reach in and check belt idler pulleys, water pumps, alternators, differentials, valve train and the block for sources of ticks, knocks or rough bearings while running.

I have the tick as well. I have heard it for a bit now... Since 36k miles, Now I am at 52k and still hear it. When I start the truck for the first time each day it makes a ticking sound for about 30 / 40 seconds then it slowly fades away. Almost like it's going away as the oil makes it's way completely through the block. It's not an injector, Sounds like someone tapping a spoon lightly on the block. If I leave the truck sit for 3 or 4 hours after driving and then fire it up it will tick tick tick then go quiet... . If I let it sit for 2 hours then fire it up... No ticking. Cant be normal, What the heck is it!

I heard a noise on mine as well, it sounded like it was coming from the vicinity of the fuel rail. So I felt around it while the engine was running and found one injector line moving with the sound of the tick. Turned out that one of the injector hold down clamps had worked loose and was making the noise every time the #3 cylinder fired. I tightened it back down and that took care of it, you all might want to check into it.

I had the same tick and like d90boy, It was the hold down clamp that had come loose. Tightened it up and the tick went away. Now its just cummins chatter!:D

I have the same tick as described by R. Taylor - except mine doesn't start immediately at start up - usually about 20 seconds or so later, then ticks for 30 or 40 seconds, then fades out.

DogramTD - with the loose hold down clamp did it tick all the time, whether cold or warm?

The only thing I have noticed with mine is that it seems to sometimes disappear temporarily with an oil change. But it comes back long before the new oil is anywhere near due for another change.

Will have to check the hold down clamps...

Schelle, what you describe sounds like a hydraulic lifter noise. The only thing that would make me think differently is that it takes about 20 seconds for the tick to start. Usually w/ a lifter, it will begin to tick right at start up. If it is a sticky lifter, not too much to worry about, you may be able to run some type of oil additive to help clean it up.

Although, it is such a new motor, dont know why it would be sticking so soon.

It still ticks, Not an injector line... . Seems to be coming from below the head. It is for sure not normal. What sucks is if I drive it to the dealership the engine of course comes up to normal operating temp..... Once it's warmed up it has to sit for at least 5 or 6 hours to start it's ticking thing again.

My '03 ticks my dad's doesn't. Maybe I have a piston installed incorrectly and is hitting the piston cooling nozzle and he doesn't. I have 120,000 miles so I won't worry about it till she goes boom I guess.
