My Dad says I have a diesel leak!

My Dad, and old truck driver, drove my RAM today for a 60 mile trip. Said his trained sniffer could detect a diesel leak.

I will be searching the boards for suggestions, but I wonder if there are any areas I should check first.

This is a truck that is just a week old, the first tank is not out of it yet and I am getting 13 mpg...

Mine may be one of the new ETC's that have only one gasket on the grid heater...

Should I see fuel dripping?

There is no fuel at the grid heater, so rule that one out.

Diesel fuel is an oil. If you have a leak under the hood, you will see it pretty easy. Start at the fuel line going to yhe lift pump and start following the fuel flow to the filter, then the injection pump, then to the injectors.

Probably blow by vapors being released into the engine compartment, which then make their way to super sniffer. Nothing to worry about if you dont fing any wet fuel.

Anytime I smell Diesel inside my truck (or car) is after I step in it because a truck driver spilled it all over the ground at the pump! How hard it it to fill those truck tanks?

Not saying all truck drivers are messy, but there are some who really don't seem to care. The problem is diesel don't evaporate like gas, and just lays there, then they throw oil dri on it and turn it into diesel clay! (which sticks to boots real good)

I know if I take my work truck to a truck stop with Super high velocity fire hose pumps it makes a mess. Becuase when it kicks off automaticly It shoot about a 1. 5 foot guyser out of the tank. I can fill 63 gallons of fuel in under two minutes at a Quicktrip stop in Tulsa.

I have a friend with a 2001 2500 Q. C. ETC 4x4. The first week he had his truck, he could smell diesel when he stopped. Took it to the dealer and the injector pump was leaking. The dealer replaced the pump. Everthing has been fine since. I hope this helps.

I will have to see if they can look at it, if the injector pump is leaking that would aslo make poor fuel economy, as I am getting 13 mpg. The dummy computer at 70 mph/2000 rpm says 15 mpg and I am sure at that speed on level ground it should be better.
