I've got Dynatrac hubs so my driveshaft should last forever. I lock them in for 20 miles or so occasionally so nothing freezes up. If I didn't have the hubs I'd get Tom Woods to build me a real driveshaft.

My Experiences Greasing the Double Cardan Joint

Thanks for the video - I learned something. I too have been using the thin needle and did not realize it can be inserted too far and get into the bearings. I also didn't know about the heavier needle with the plastic tip. I will get one of those and quit using the thin one even though I've never broken a thin one.

So are you going to have Woods build you one without the Double Cardan Joint?

I had thought the newer trucks didn’t have them so I sent my needles with the ‘05. Well I suppose I should have looked because my ‘18 does have one.

I like that plastic tipped one and will have to see about getting one.

Yeah I have not touched mine yet either. I knew about it just lazy, really need a better set up in the garage, have the room just a bit disorganized the last year. End of 2019 and 2020 have been crazy.

The other thing is ever since I got my truck the front sway bar link the top of the link has always been rusted, been meaning to spray that up, will have the wire brush it then spray it up with some rust prevent.

I can tell you that I HATE greasing that joint. It's a real pain to get you, the grease gun in the right spot. I have to an oil and filter change soon and I am already dreading this deed.

@Audiowriter No, no the scores are NOT there to bend the big needle. They are WEAK points that go "SNAP!" when you try and bend the needle as required to reach. I suggest dropping it in a vise to protect the weak score areas and bend it in another "full strength" area on the needle. Save one a 1/2 hour round trip to the parts store to, uh, exchange the snapped needle. Comments about how to bend it very carefully at the very weak score marks were otherwise missing.

Having the small needle on hand for lubing lifetime tie rods and other high mile stuff I used that to grease the joint this time.

How to actually find the grease hole would be helpful... Looks like the factory puts a splash of paint where the grease hole is. It's on the front side of the joint away from the transfer case. The grease leftover from the dealer that comes out the other side as you flush the joint out is confusing for first timers. Has em looking at the wrong side of the joint. I had to get my truck fully out of 4x4 so I could spin the driveshaft by hand and used a mirror after removing all the extra grease to find it.

I’ve been using a heavy needle about 3-4”long on a grease gun with pistol grip pump & flex hose for the last 4 years. This set up works well . The needle doesn’t have the zert in the back of it, it’s threaded directly on the hose. Use one hand to pump & the other to direct the needle. As others have said paint the yoke by the zerk for easy locating.
