I am creeping up on 15K miles, and my first fuel filter(s) change. The diesel supplement says the "Service Fuel Filter" message will appear at 5% life remaining. Not so much. The filter minder screen is now down to 0%, and I have been waiting for the EVIC to alert, but nothing as yet. Is the manual incorrect? Are others getting the message?

I have receive the warning for fuel filter change at less than 5% percent just below that point, I chose due the rear one first. After changing the first one, I did a little different I cycle the fuel pump six times, then started engine, start right up. Next move to the front filter, remove and replace and did same cycle with pump.

Might be possible that your clock was reset during that power train flash I think you got.
I don't think so, as I cycle through my gauges regularly, and it has pretty consistently been counting down. On Edit: Sorry for the blurry picture.

This morning, the fuel filter minder finally alerted, at 14,962 miles. No percentage, or mileage seems to correspond with that number, so what triggers remains a mystery. Photo was taken later, so odometer does not match. That will be this morning's project.

I didn’t write down the mileage, but my alert was at about the same time. Seems late to me, but oh well.

TFucili I took about three hours to due both filters including wiping down other stuff under and around the truck, probably would have been less as I was trying difference method of filling the filters backup.

I completed both filter changes. Installed a longer drain on the front canister. I see why folks moan about the rear canister, as it is pretty hard not to make a mess. I had some tubing on hand, but not the correct diameter, so I cut a length(more on that later)of the closest diameter and had that draining into a gallon jug sitting in my drain pan. When you open the drain valve enough to get any flow, it begins to drip around it, then you have to ever so slowly loosen the canister until it breaks vacuum and flows quite a bit more. I didn't take a bath in it, but the front canister is a better arrangement, IMHO. No big deal. I cycled the ignition several times, and she lit right off, never skipped a beat. Now for the bonehead move of the day. I had my tubing cutters under the truck to cut the drain line to length. Naturally, they got caught under the creeper(did I mention I hate working on a creeper in my old age?)without thinking, I grab the cutters, like a waiting alligator, and the blade got my left thumb big time. DOH! A Scott towel and some electrical tape, and on we went. Note to self: Always keep cutters latched shut:oops:

I have been doing better at wearing mechanic's gloves. When they are saturated with diesel fuel everything is slippery as an eel. I had a pair of nitrile gloves on, but had just torn one, and removed them, not that they offer any protection anyway. That pointy blade would have gone right through the thinner work gloves, too. Just a dumb move, not thinking.

Tom,

Not sure how much the 2019 and 2017 filter minders compare, but on my 2017 I still had 20% left on my filters showing at 15K miles, so I'm thinking it might be a pressure sensor to determine change requirement. Mine has a high heavy towing duty cycle, so not sure if duty cycle calculates in.

Anyhoo, one more thing to ponder.

Cheers, Ron

I don't know what it's based on, but the front filter looked almost new, and the rear filter just had a gray tinge from the asphaltenes in diesel fuel. I'd have a hard time thinking there was enough restriction to turn any alert on. At least I know it did work, so it's all good.

On my Sprinter, everything is time or mileage based. The change indicators counts down from 20K after reset (or 2 years whichever comes first). I wonder if the Ram is programmed the same way for the fuel filters?

Good question. The filter life gauge steadily counted down. I guess it could just be that the manual is incorrect when it says it will alert at 5% remaining. It's not that I need the minder. My '05 didn't, and I never missed a change.

Freinds,

My type A(ness) or is it A(nus) got the best of me... I looked in my 2017 OEM service manual and there are WIF sensors in the fuel filter canisters and a high pressure or two in the common rail, but no other sensors shown. So, I'm guessing it's software that calculates it, but the smoke and mirrors behind EVIC. In the wiring, the EVIC pretty much shows a mux and can C inputs.

Cheers, Ron
