Does anyone know the regen strategy on these trucks? A while ago I thought it sounded a bit rattly, and went to the regen screen, and it said active rehen in process. I was pretty sure the gauge screen said zero, but wasn't sure. So I have been driving with the DPF gauge up, and this morning it went into regen when the gauge said zero. Normal behavior???

Yep, normal. Not so much a strategy as you reached a threshold to do it. Prior to installing my Edge CST2 Monitor, I NEVER knew when my 2017 5500 was in regen. AND, I put a lot of idle HOURS playing with settings. I bought mine in March 2018, so running the truck for air conditioning was a must... mine has to be in run AND NOT in gear to change settings.

Now that I know when in REGEN, I see regen RPMs at 1100 RPMs when normal idle is 707. Most of the time when I sit idling, I run up the RPM to around 1,000 RPM, old habit.

So, Ram has got regen down to an art. They've progressed just like automotive world progressed from heavy smelly lead pellet catalytic converters with bogged down motors to high flow super cars.

Have fun learning your new beast, when ya gonna tow with it and get that really BIG smile?
I took mine on first RV trip around 3 weeks after buying mine.

Cheers, Ron

That's where I am a bit confused, as the DPF gauge indicated zero. I thought it had to reach a given percentage restriction to initiate an active regen.

. Have done a couple hundred mile test pull, and it did really well. Too much stuff going on to plan a trip right now. I'm not much of a planner anyway. That sometimes gets me in trouble:D

Do mind taking a pic of the DPF gauge and posting it? Just curious to see it.

EDIT: Tom, I reread your post and understand your question...and note that mine might not be full either. This leads me to speculate rather than have the DPF reach a near full rate, that there are preventative regens. Very interesting concept, smart regens.

Thanks, Ron

I read on another board a poster mentioned his went into regen with 0% reading in the dpf screen as well.
As to the dead pedal question there is none on my 19.

I watch mine via ScanGauge, soot load gradually increases in % up to 99 before going into active regen. It will immediately drop down to near zero before eventually settling out around 10-15% soot load after performing a full regen. It's never went to 0 and stayed there in the time that I've been monitoring it.
Your gauge never reading anything but 0 is strange. Does a light or something come on stating it's in regen?

When you described the rattling sound could it have been the DEF pump you heard? It is pretty loud and makes a fairly quick ticking sound when it is running.

When I took delivery it was above zero, probably pushing the first mark(25%??). I figured lots of starting/stopping and idling along the way. I headed out US 60 with the cruise set at 68 and it went to zero after a while.

They changed the strategy on my 07 C&C with an update in 2009 that caused my still current glitch (long story), to going into regen every so many miles. Sometimes it seems to be every tank of fuel.

Wow, that would be sweet, if I could do that on my 07 C&C, I'd turn it off until on the interstate

Well, the downside is that speed is limited to 25mph, if the switch is depressed and an upcoming regen was canceled.

Interstate is best, with our dump trucks we had more then once to ask the dispatcher for a longer run to finish a regen. Otherwise the regen failed once after another for days sometime till we figured it out.

There has been a manual regen mode - as well as an inhibit regen - available in our cranes since they went dpf. Of all the qsb and qsc (6.7 and 8.3) platforms I've never had a need to use either function outside of curiosity. The systems are very seamless. It may seem apples to oranges, but it is all Cummins tech.

How do you initiate a manual regen... I haven't found that on my 2017.

Thanks, Ron

I hate drawing Ford-Ram parallels but I think the EPA regs keep them on par. Anyhow, I know beyond a certain soot level, you can initiate a regen through the steering wheel buttons and dash menu. With Ford, man regen is an option on the 550.
