Thinking about an '09 2500 w/6.7

Moved this over from 911

I was out yesterday and after being parked for a few hours, I fired up my truck and started to drive off. I noticed a weird grinding/vibration for a second and then it went away. A short while later, at an intersection, clutch in, it happened again, only more noticeable.

Over the next few minutes, when ever I stopped, it seems to re-occur and increase in intensity! Stopped again, and when I restarted, I switched the transfer case from 2WH - 4WH -4WL and back -no change. . Still occurred when ever I slowed down and went to neutral. Can't be certain if it is the clutch assembly (had to put a new throwout bearing in a month ago) or the front drive train. I switched to 4WH and it seemed to stop.

I am very reluctant to drive her any further than the dealer!

Any thoughts on WT? is going on?

Could it be an ice buildup? I spent the weekend ice fishing and driving thru some heavy snow for a day!

Thanks as always guys!:confused::confused::confused::mad:

Does it only happen with the clutch in or will it do it in neutral with the clutch out. How many miles on your truck and why did you have to put a new throwout bearing in? Is the 4wd a manual shifter or the electronic type. How many HP?

I have heard of ice build-up giving issues with the anti-lock brake clock-rings and sensors, but never anything giving grinding noises.

Only with the clutch in so far. 28,000 miles and the throw out bearing was bad from the day I drove the truck off the lot! 4WD is electronic. . 350hp, haven't chipped it.

Well there is a lot of stuff in these newer trucks I know next to nothing about and I've never been in a G56, so take the free advice for what its worth ;) but my gut feeling is that your throw-out bearing is gone again. Perhaps you have a bent input shaft on the transmission?

Hmmm... Just drove it for a while today and no issue??? Really weird! Gonna have to trust the dealership and see wazzup I guess! Unless the shaft was defective at build no reason why it would be in anything but good shape. . I put all the miles on. .

New Info Bad flywheel/Clutch Need aftermarket Ball Joint Recommendation

Update

Dealer looked at it this AM. . Seems the Throw Out bearing is gone again! However, it implies that there is an issue with the flywheel! So they've ordered a kit and will be fixing it. . Dealer Just Called, seems there has been a couple of revs on the clutch! Not happy they aren't HONORING MY WARRANTY!

Also noted my ball joints are loose. Any recommendations for a tough aftermarket set up. with 29k miles these seem flimsy!!

What did you mean by "seems there has been a couple of revs on the clutch!" Did you mean the ECM download indicated the engine had been overrevved?

It is very rare, maybe extremely rare, for a truck to have two failed clutch throwout bearing failures in under 30k miles. Since the dealer has already refused repairs under warranty can you tell us why you think it failed? Has it been drag raced or the engine revved in neutral before engaging the clutch for a drag strip launch?

I assume you know that when stopped at a traffic light you should always shift into neutral and take your foot off the clutch until the light changes to green again. The heavy pressure required to disengage and hold the big clutch disengaged against strong clutch pressure plate springs will quickly destroy a throwout bearing if the driver keeps the truck in gear and his foot on the clutch pedal while stopped in traffic.

Hmm. .

By rev I mean Chrysler has modified the clutch design at least twice since I purchased my truck.

Dealer refused warranty because I bought the truck in the US and Chrysler Canada won't honour the warranty! BS but. .

It seems there must be some notice out about this issue and the dealer mentioned the flywheel!

Sure shifting to neutral would be the best approach. . My throw out bearing was an issue from the time I drove of the dealers lot!!

Sucks but!

Thanks Harvey!

BTW Bought it in Giddings Texas!!

Thanks for the explanation. I got it. "Revised" was your meaning when you used the abbreviation "rev. "

As a former hotrodder long ago in my youth the word "rev" in my dictionary is a verb meaning to increase engine speed as in revolutions per minute.

I'm not a fan of the dual mass flywheel assembly used on manual transmission Dodges since 2006 so I wouldn't be surprised if there are revisions to the parts. I suspect they have been troublesome.

Apparently the Canadian warranty policy is a restriction of free trade meant to force Canadian citizens to buy Canadian. You probably saved enough by traveling to a truck discounter in Giddings, TX to pay for the transmission removal and throwout bearing repair anyway. Can you take it back to a US dealer for warranty repairs? Surely there's a good Dodge dealer down in North or South Dakota.

TDR advertiser Standard Transmission and Gear in Fort Worth, Texas is a great company to deal with. They offer excellent service, quality work, fine products, and honest, fair treatment of their customers. Standard Transmission rebuilt the NVG-5600 in my old '01 Ram several years ago. I was very pleased with their work, their service, and their pricing. They are friendly folks who invited me back into the laboratory-clean rebuild area where the rebuilder showed me each component, pointed out excess wear, and explained which parts required replacement.

You might consider replacing the entire clutch and flywheel assembly since the transmission is going to require removal and you have no warranty anyway. Standard offers a conventional flywheel and clutch assembly as a direct replacement for later model Dodge Rams with dual mass flywheels. I don't know anything about that product except that they advertise it in TDR magazine but I do know that Standard can be trusted.

Thanks Harvey, absolutley right on the Canadian thang! Chrysler can leverage NAFTA but be damned if the people can... See smoke from ears!

They are going to replace the clutch/flywheel assembly. . to late to go after market.

Going aftermarket on the front end tho!!
