Need help! Green light on, no trailer on.

Hi all,

I am currently loading the RV for 2 months out West and yesterday noticed the green light is on on my Tekonsha Voyager. The problem is is that there is no trailer plugged into the socket.



Here's what I have. Under dash controller 4 wires, butt connected into an adapter to plug the controller 4 pin to the factory Dodge 4 connector. All connections good here.

I did as tech support said, cut the Blue wire feeding controller, and green light goes out. Indicating a short??

I separated the 4 pin connector, using Volt/Ohm meter checked female plug end of factory I found a direct ground connection on 2 of the pins, instead of one, I assume it should show ground on one, and 12+ on the other.

Checked fuse under hood for trailer brakes and found it good.

Climbed under truck where I have an additional socket installed in the truck bed, it appears the RV dealer spliced into the factory harness that runs to rear under bumper mounted trailer hitch.

Everything here seems fine. No loose connections or splices done poorly.

I am running out of time, I need to leave here either Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.

Anyone with some knowledge of the wiring or what I should check would be appreciated. I have 30 year experience in electronics, so not much I cannot check, but don't have the time to spend troubleshooting without a wiring diagram.

Disassemble the 7 pin connector at the back of the truck. Clean it up, reassemble and pack it with dielectric grease. You have water and dirt causing corrosion and current leakage from the blue wire to the ground circuit. That should do the trick.

I had the same problem once

on other truck the plug on the trailer hitch was full of water and ice. I think the brake light wire is on the bottom of the plug and it gets all the crap sitting on it. Shorting it to ground telling the controller there is a load (trailer) hooked up.

I had the same problem with my truck. It turned out to be, not the 7 pin plug itself but the pigtail from the 7 pin plug that plugs into the wiring harness. Take the plug out and unplug it from the pigtail. I got about a table spoon full of water. Dried it out and no more problems. Phil

All right. You guys are still the best... . I found it. I removed the plug from the rear of the factory 7 pin connector.

Guess what??? 3 pins heavily corroded. Cleaned, lubed and reconnected green light is off. Everything seems normal once again.

For the RV people, its a good idea to keep a can of CRC Electronic

Cleaner in Your tool kit. At this time of year condensation of electrical connections is common along with corrosion. This stuff really works & drys out the moisture fast.
