NO I use muffs and plugs when you can shoot as far as that RIFLE can YOU HAVE TIME TO MAKE A SET UP do a few mathematical calculations get some wind info take a swig of water get comfortable and GO TO WORK. ;)

I LIKE THAT BIG GUN PIC PARD :-laf

actually Greg this new muzz break really kicks back the dirt so eye protection as always is a must!!

I think I told ya about Bob and Nora 2 seasons ago we where riding in and taking a break to rest our butts I started to glass and seen one a good distance away turned out to be 980 yds. Nora had been in this scenario before when I said to plug your ears!!!!! Bob on the other hand said Son I was in WWII on the big boats when them guns went off your teeth fell out. OK!! :D touched it off (he is a man of the cloth) his exact words were MY GOD SON WHY IN THE HELL DO YOU NEED THAT!!! :-laf Oo. :-laf

Can I borrow that for an HP Printer/fax/scanner?!?!?! Probably wouldn't hurt it any worse than a 340 Weatherby did..... :(

I does love me some exploding silicon parts... . Once tied 1/2lb of tannerite inside my old desktop... . :D :D Oh, that made a nice little mess. I need to do it again... ... The last printer/scanner I had, I turned my wife loose on with a baseball bat... . kinda like the movie "Office Space"... ... . Was funny 'til she fell and busted her arse... then it became hysterical!!!!!! She got even madder at that, and really went to work... . she worked herself up so bad, I had to take her to the house and give her a beer!!!! She even got out her 9mm and emptied a few mags into what was left!!!!:-laf Durndest thing I ever saw her do!!! Reminds me to never cross her... ... . she has a shovel...

I always appreciate yall's advice, GregH, HH, and Big but I even more enjoy your stories. Everyone in the office is wondering what I am laughing at over. :-laf

My wife currently deer hunts with a browning A bolt 243. While this is enough to get the job done on whitetail deer here at home she has expressed intrest in going out west in the prusuit of bigger game. What would some of you recommend with simalr weight and recoil to the 243 but with the knock down power needed for big game out to the 200-300 yrd range. She realliy likes her A bolt. She has shot my 7mag bar from a rest and felt like it had too much recoil and definatly is too heavy for her. Open to all sugestions and modifications.

CBari maybe this will help I have been trying to find it but could not just a comparison. Some times other things influence KICK making sure the GUN FIT'S is a BIG PLUS. You said she shot a 7 mm mag from a bench did the BENCH fit her? benches tend to make the gun kick my A** cause untill I built one for ME!! in MT I used one that fits MOST!! NOT THE SAME. We brought out the 45/70 to shoot some BIL asked what we use for the bears? It KICKS on some but I dont find it all that bad!!! but IT FITS ME!!! others have shot it 1 time and want NOTHING to do with it EVER!! again. Hope this help in your choice JMO I would rather have more power than JUSSSSSST ENOUGH.

I've killed great many numbers of game, including black bear, elk, and many, many hogs with a . 270.

IMO, a . 270 would work. I'd recommend a minimum of 150gr bullet at 2800fps, just due to the downrange energy. With that weight of bullet, there is enough energy to penetrate and break a shoulder of a bull elk out to 4-500 yards...

I'm a novice compared to some on this board, but I like my . 270 and I would be confident hunting almost any large game excluding large bears. They seem to be very flat shooting and accurate, add a decent decelerator pad and recoil is manageable.

I picked up this Remington model 721 from an old high school buddy for $250, it had the 6x Leopold, some trigger work, and he mentioned something about a "bedded"? barrel, not sure what that means. I added the recoil pad and this is a definite favorite rifle for me, and I believe it would be a good choice for the op's wife.

I have a Rem Mod 721 it was my first deer rifle (10 years old,Brother was 12 used his Birth cert. )Dad pitched Softball (fast pitch) for a team in Norfolk Va the team was sponsored by a sporting goods dealer. He told my Dad you win the tournament and you got the rifle. Its a 30/06 Weaver 6x got a few mule deer and one Elk the season before I went in the military. Mom and Dad said it was the best Elk that they ever didn't have to shoot but ate.

Thats the ONLY rifle that is wearing a wood stock it needs to be rebarreled but I just dont have the hart to take it apart.

BIG, you have a better camera. . and a pricer stock...

I did not intend to mention a different choice for the op's wife, because he wanted a tool to reach out past 100 yards... Under, or at 100 yards this is a super alternative to long range fast moving loads. I did sell this, but I have the earlier model, and a Winchester Trapper . 44mag. This would be a nice "wife's gun".

I gave, or have upon my death, designated the earlier Ruger . 44 mag semi auto carbine to my daughter.

The 7mag she shot was a bar and it just doesn't kick much but is too heavy for her to carry. We are going to shot some different guns this spring and see what we come up with. Birthday is in June hopefully the gun market will settle down a bit by then.

Kind of looks like my 30 cal carbine its a straight wall case, its fun to chase coyotes with it to scare them off with a 30 round clip

We are fortunate in that we dont have to worry about weight of our guns the MULE'S dont seem to mind. That IMO would be a good idea to try different guns they all kick different and some in same caliber different gun kicks different.
