Want to add a hitch off the back of my trailer

I have a 2001 Dodge diesel 2500 4 wheel drive quad cab automatic pickup. The steer axle weight is 4420 lbs, and the drive is 3100 lbs, and the gross vehicle weight is 7520 lbs just for the truck. Truck and trailer steer axle weight is 4480 lbs, the drive axle is 3960 lbs, the trailer axle is 4780 lbs, and the grosss weight is 13220 lbs. The truck is registered for 11,172 lbs and the trailer GVWR/PIVBV is 15680 lbs. I need to know how much I can haul on the truck and trailer through ND, MN, WI, IL, OH, WV, PA and still be within the legal limits.

We will be traveling I-94 East to I-694 East to I-90 West to I-39 South to I-74 East to I-465 South to I-70 East to I-270 East to I-70 East to PA Turnpike 76 East.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Gerald

I am moving to PA from ND so it will be a one time trip. Bouth the truck and trailer are Single wheel but the trailer is a tandem axle.

If you load the trailer properly 20-25% pin weight, if you don't go over the rear axle tire limits, everything else should be OK or very close to it. This seems to be the first limiting factor.

This will mean about 3000 lbs of tongue weight and a 12000-15000 total trailer weight (trailer+payload).

Also check trailer axles and tires. You didn't say if those are duals or tandems or 7000# or what.

Check to see if your states drivers license rating allows GCWR (truck and trailer GVWRs combined) over 26,000. Non-commercial varies state by state. Some states require class A non-commerial, some allow it with a class C. If your state allows it, then you won't have any trouble, or at least should not have any trouble.

So the tires are 3000 # each on the trailer probably. You can put 12k on the trailer tires, 3k on the truck. That would be 20% pin weight if you load it that much.

Unless you are hauling steel, you will have a hard time overloading the trailer.

Your biggest concern, as others have said will be pin weight.

I figure you are going to be hauling household stuff etc.

If so you'll have no problem.

The trip will also be one time, so that is on your side.

Also as for the legalities of it, very few officers are going to "nail" you unless it is grossly obvious.

If you go flying thru their town or part of the highway they may get you.

If you use your head and be overly courteous you will do fine.

I have a few buddies that haul semi-commercially their own stuff.

They are on these stretches of road quite often, none have had trouble.

One did get pulled over, and he was overloaded, the officer let him go and said, BTW you are entering ****** county, they might not be so understanding.

He was EXTREMELY nice to the officer and was very cooperative.

He also has a trusting nature. This all helped him get out of it.

When you say "registered for" do you have commercial tags on it??

KO

I need to get the tag for the trailer I am wait for the title to come in the mail. Will I need to keep a log book. The tires are load range E.

as long as you are tagged personally and not in a company name you do not need a log book nor doo you need to pull into the scales unless you have truck tags. If you are registered in your name then your truck tag will be added to the gvw of the trailer if you do get checked. I routinely gross 23 to 26,000 lbs and have only been checked once in 6 years and that was after a landscape company lost a trailer and hit a school bus killing a few kids. They checked the brakes and the brake away and the chains said have a good day and left. Don't sweat the trip take your time and leave ample following distance and you will be fine

Welcome to our neck of the woods

Hey I think you be just fine coming in thru there, as long as you dont have it loaded real weired and it looks pretty aviouse that something is wrong here you will be fine. I do quite a bit of hauling and never been bothered.

Just come on in and have a safe ride and we'll be seein you then!!!

I live just south of Carlisle. Work up there quite abit.

Thanks for the help I will be driving in at the end of oct sometime. I am makeing a box for the trailer it will be 4' in the frount then 8' back it will go to 8' so I will not have that much wind drage. There will be 12' of the 8' high part. I hope it all works out in the end. I can not whight to get back to PA. Jrissler do you pull youer truck at the Shippensburg fair. You might know one of my friend Jason Fry. Well it bin nice talking about all this I will let you guys know when I get the tags for it.

your house hold items add up quick in weight... I just moved from Saratoga Springs, NY to Phoenix, AZ moved the family and 1800 Sqft house my self, after I loaded the last item on the 10,000# Cargo Trialer all for of my tires looked flat. I towed the trailer to the local farm feed store and had it weighed and it was 16,497 #. I ended up buying stronger tires to handel the load. four days of travel no problems with truck or trailer or law enforcment ... just Fuel mileage was about 12 mpg. I'm used to 16mpg when I tow my 10,000# 5thver. Carlisle has excellent car shows and swap meets all year long, I enjoy the mopar weekends. good luck with your move.
