I am looking at purchasing a 1992 D250 TBD 2wd to be a third family vehicle. It is a one owner with no visible scratches or dents.

I drove it hard for about 30 minutes. Seems to be tight and shifts

well. It does not seem to be quick from 0 to 60 like my old 6. 5 chevy. It is an automatic with 260000 mostly highway miles. He said he never towed a travel trailer or anything heavy. It was used to go on trips from GA to Canada often and back and forth to work. He does live in a rural area where you are 30-40 miles

to a wal-mart etc... . he seemed to be very picky about maintenance and showed me proof of oil changes every 3000 miles. All the loose and worn front end steering parts have been

replaced. He did not even offer the truck for sale. I struck up a conversation with him in the mall parking lot and one thing led to another. He needs the money so he can put $$$ on a new four door truck. He wants $5000. . ANY INPUT OR ADVICE WOULD

BE APPRECIATED. THANKS EVERYONE ALSO NEED TO MENTION

THE TRUCK WAS RE-PAINTED TO ORIGINAL STOCK COLORS 2 YEARS AGO.

For my area the Nada High Retail is $5600 after they subtract

$350 for high miles. If these miles are indeed mostly highway miles and oil was changed every 3 thousand maybe the truck could make to 350000 miles? I could try to talk him down but

he seems set on the price and these trucks are hard to find for sale. Owner of these truck tend to hold on to them.

I paid $6000 for mine 2 years ago with 100k less miles. New steering parts, new paint, good maintenance record, no heavy towing, if it was me I would have already bought it. If he offers it for sale it won't last long. If it feels good and the trans shifts firm go for it.

Sounds just like mine. Very well cared for, mine had 166K, painted a few years prior to purchase, nearly all interstate driving between Ohio and Fla. I very happily gave him $4900. 00

Go for it and don't think twice.

High price and miles for that auto transmission. Is it a club cab long bed, reg cab etc? Engine probly has alot of life left in it, but if its the original transmission, its probly near the end of its service life. $5K is probly what he wants... . but what he'll take... ... . ?? Bill

Come on guys! I mean a blind squirrel even finds a nut once in a while. And those once in a while's is where you guys are getting these trucks for under $4000. I bet any one of you to go out and give me a honest search of your surrounding area for a 1st Gen CTD. I guarantee you will not find more than 7 out of 10 for under $4500. And I bet only 1 of those 3 are in what you call fair/good shape. I know everyone likes to brag about how good a deal they got on their truck. But let's be honest, we all know what these things are bringing and they are not getting any cheaper.

I will step off my soapbox now and you can call me whatever you want.

Well like I said above. You looked for a month and found 2 trucks. You found one that was reasonable and the one you bought you stole.

I collect antique tractors and I remember 7-10 years ago when you could still buy a lot of old tractors for $800 or less in running condition. Now it is getting hard to buy anything running for less than $1500.

Same way with these trucks, you cannot look at them and just value them as a used vehicle anymore. They are becoming popular, somewhat of a collectors item. They are not going to get any cheaper and people selling them knows this.

Now you know as well as I do, if someone offered you $3200 for your truck you would not take it. The reason why, you think it is worth more than that. You have done this to it and that to it. But as the buyer you try to act as if this or that doesn't help value and this is what the book saysit is worth.

I am not trying to start a war here. I just frankly am getting tired of hearing people talk about "Oh, that way too much money, I got mine for this price and it had this, or this was done. " I am glad everyone that got a good deal did. Not everybody is is able to get a deal like that. It is time for some people on here to start giving helpfull advise on people who want to purchase one of these fine vehicles instead of running them away from them. I am not pointing fingers at any one person, just a group in general.

You all can think whatever you want of me now. I will also say this, send me info about every $3200 dollar road worthy 1st Gen CTD you find. I will buy them all. The reason I can do this, is because you don't see very many like that at all. It is certainly not a everyday occurance. I assure you of that. I was not born yesterday.

IMHO, 5K -6K is TOO much to pay for a truck that I know will have to have a transmission soon and other parts

I am willing to spend 3200 and know I have to amke repairs. I already did:

Lower Balljoints and a Borgeson Shaft. Next is to do a valve adjustment, Install the POD's on the shelf and the Pyro gauge.

I would rather search longer for a truck that cost less and spend the diff in parts BOTH types of trucks WILL need.

You should really turn yourself into the police. First the truck, then the tractor. I can still find a few like that, but fencerows are getting picked over pretty good and are getting hard to find.

I'd be a little leery of the auto, but then I'm afraid of all autos. (yet I have the infamous Getrag, go figure). If the rest of the truck is in good shape, and it runs well, been taken care of, go for it. I sold a 91 (intercooled) D250 RC, 5 speed, new paint, pyro/ boost, 3. 5" exh, stock turbo/ injectors, 160K for $5500 last summer. First guy to drive it took it and never blinked an eye. I had paid $4300 for it two months earlier. Then I turned around and bought a W250 for $4300 from fellow TDR member Andy Mikonis. Both trucks were worth more than I paid for them, but if all parties are satisfied with the deal, then no one is worse for the wear. Like farmall said, they are getting to be a collector's item of sorts, at least the ones taken care of. My current one needs a bit of body work to be worth more than $4000. The ones that have been rode hard and put away wet go for <$3000 quite often.

I would like to thank everyone for there replies. This is a great forum. I will go check out the truck one more time

and make an offer. I will let you guys know what happened. As for the automatic it does shift well and seems tight. I spoke with a

local auto transmission re-builder and he said he rebuilds 1992 auto trannys for $1400-$1600 turnkey.

I agree with all that Farmall has said. Good job! Bottom line is... ... ... ... ... supply vs demand, or pay what you think is fair, or you get what you pay for, or I'm tired of driving around the tri-state area looking at truck after truck, or... ... ... .....

You guys with your $3000 and $4000 trucks are depressing me. :(

Anything on a lot is southern ID is over $10k. Almost $15k if its a 1 ton. The best deal we could make was $8000 to $9000 for cash. My friend had his 92 3/4 4x4 with 180k totalled in a head-on last summer. When the insurance got done they gave him $10,500 for it. Even the private parties sellers are right up there in price and they are getting the dollars. About the best deals we have found on these trucks are in Texas, private and dealers both.

Msilva, are you sure you told the builder the trans is behind a Cummins? If you can get a builder here to even talk to you about it, they want at least $2500 for a rebuild and they kick on the warranty. At the price he quoted its almost worth a trip.

AUTO transmission REBUILD

Cerberusiam,
