When backing off governor springs one "click" is one click equal to about 1/2 a turn on the retaining nut? I just backed mine off, about 1/2 a turn each and now the truck idles at just over 500 rpm. Before I was getting surging this is why I adjusted them. Should I just turn up the idle, or tighten down the springs a little more? Also slid afc housing ahead and plate all the way forward. Can't get ahold of Piers... ...

Hey John

I can't give you any advice but tell me what sliding the plate did for you, I slid mine the other day and the EGT's went through the roof but it was too cool(Power) Since then I slid it back and adjusted the arm like we talked about, the throttle responce is real good but I haven't taken a good look at the EGT's since then, went around a car today(on it) and they were passing 1200 at 2300 I will get a 4" this week for sure so I will see what it does for me EGT wise.

Is the Gov Spring kit a bear or just time consuming!

Cummins power in traffic is too much fun!(Hammer it and suck there doors off)

Jim,

The plate slid forward gave me lots more power, but like you experienced higher egt's. I don't notice my low end miss anymore. It's running stronger right now, but I still am not to fussy about the idle. The governor spring kit is not to hard. The instructions that come with it are good. Just wish I knew what happens when you tighten the Gov springs and when you loosen them. As for the arm adjustment, the lever does not even touch my fuel plate  ????

SD, Tightening the GS will make the throttle really touchy and too loose will make the throttle mushy. If you don't have the mushy throttle I would just turn up the idle speed.

I just played with trying to get rid of some of the smoke that I make and had turned the AFC adjustment way in(lean) it gave me a low speed flutter. I guess this is because the AFC was bumping the rocker at this speed. It's back in the smokem out mode again and is smooth. :D :D

I think that is what happened to mine, I smoke like a freight train now, but no more low rpm flutter. I will drive it like it is for a couple of days and see what I think. The less touchy throttle is nice.

SD, Mine smoke even with 40 pound of boost although since the temps have fallen it isn't as bad. I think it's time for a bigger turbo:eek: :( :D

I'm glad I could help.

My adjustment

It was kind of weard cause I dropped the ball on the instructions, moved the lever down to far(lack of understanding) and lost all the power(lost 6lbs and 300 egt) so I moved the arm to the very top of the plate after I put the plate back to stock position, the throttle responce is really nice and the boost an egt's are back to normal. Mine smokes on initial throttle a bit but seems to clean out well under boost, still waiting on the 3k's to come in and looks like I'll get the 4" ordered this week(unexspected $500. 00) so we'll see how it act's after that. Oh and found out about a good transmission guy in Dallas to install the DTT stuff when I get it bought(I'm a bombing junkie)

Jim

JFulmer, I had to adjust the rocker 4 time before I got it right. Bombing gets under your skin be careful. I keep telling myself when I get here that will be enough then I get there and I start planning my next bombing run.

  :D  :D

Swamp Donkey,

Simply moving the throttle lever doesn't always allow the rocker to travel all the way forward. On some pumps you have to actually pull the rocker forward manually to see exactly where it is going to hit the plate. Or you can remove the back plate, and push the rocker forward until it hits the plate.

Try only moving the throttle to about 1/4 travel while watching the rocker. On my 215 pump, 1/4 travel touches the plate, but any more throttle causes the rocker to retract back.

When the truck is running though, the rocker will move as far forward as the governor springs and throttle allow up to its maximum travel.

If you are looking down through the AFC hole on top of the pump, the rocker only comes into that hole about 1/2". If your plate is farther forward than this, then no it will never touch.

I hope this makes sense.

SD, My plate is . 03 from being all the way forward and just as Strick-9 said mine doesn't touch unless I help it some (push it forward from behind.

I found that my pump is now leaking oil from the back cover O-ring. Any one know where I can get this O-ring???

Strick-9,

I worked my throttle about 7-8 times while watching the governor lever. It popped out from just a little over idle and was going back in by about 1/16 throttle. I was going to measure to see how close it was coming to the plate, but I thought what's the point! It's not touching. I am just asking to make sure, if the lever does not touch the plate, the adjustment is unnecesary. Correct? I also backed of my governor spring, and am still getting the eratic idle. Not as bad, but still annoying. Might have to dig into pump again tommorow!

The rocker WILL touch the plate with the engine running unless you have cut the slots out and have it ALL the way forward.

The easiest and quickest way to see full rack travel is to remove the camplate. Turn your ignition on and pull up the shutoff solenoid. The shutoff solenoid keeps the rack travel pressed all the way back. It is designed to be stronger than the throttle springs. It has to be this way so the truck will die when cut off even with the accelerator depressed. This is what is keeping you from seeing full rack travel.

You'll see a square block that has an arm with a spring around it heading back. Take your finger and move this block forward until it stops. That is full rack travel. Notice the position of the rocker.

You should be able to use the throttle now to see FULL rack travel as long as the shutoff solenoid is UP. If not then remove the back plate and push it forward manually.

I hope this helps. It should definately hit your plate.

-Chris
