Tow settings with Comp/Smarty?

I need some advise on a fair price to haul a tractor from Illinois to roughly Nashville Tenn. I have moved this tractor once before about 50 mile's for this guy, but he bought a place in Tennessee and he want's me to take it down there for him. It's a John Deere with a brush mower on the back. It's a good size tractor, so I need to borrow a buddie's deck over trailer also. The trip is just short of 600 mile's. He said he'd pay fuel, hotel and wanted me to give him a price. Can someone give me a ballpark. I was thinking $1500 or $1/mile plus fuel and not staying in a hotel. I want to go down, drop the tractor and head back. I don't want to rip this guy off, he's the uncle of a guy I work with. I also don't want to get screwed either! Please help, Thank's

They have a hauling page where people request and get hauling quotes to move every type of thing around the country. Some quotes are from pros hauling for a living; some requests for quotes are from individuals trying to get rock bottom price for moving their item.



Also look at uShip - The Online Shipping Marketplace - Ship Freight, Furniture, Vehicles or Moves Same type of thing, except that UShip caters more to professional haulers, requires a fee and sort of "brokers" the load.



The few loads that I've hauled (while going somewhere else -- trying to recoup a little fuel money) I calculated this way: So much for fuel, based on my estimated MPG and the distance to be run; whether or not I wanted to make any money in addition or just pay for the fuel; and whether or not I wanted to be paid something for the "aggravation and responsibility" of hauling someone else's stuff. However, I've never been in the postion of simply hauling one-way for a fixed fee and then immediately returning to point-of-origin; I've always been on my way to somewhere.

If it was me I would tell him $2. 75 a loaded and I would pay all my own fuel. Make sure your insured to be hauling his tractor. Last time I had to borrow a trailer for anything I asked if the tires would good to haul the load I was carring needless to say they werent 3 new tires later and I didn't make any money on that load.
 
Since you do not have authority to haul, you best hope you don't get everything confiscated by DOT if they check you out, buddys uncle won't like you too much then ! :p

Hmmm... UShip caters to pros?? :confused::eek: How is that?? They cater to anyone (illegal) to haul for nothing then say they are not brokers when in fact, that is exactly what they are! I got a red flag there 2 weeks ago for telling someone good luck with his haul , hope you use a legit carrier, pretty much sums up what they are after right there. . the 7. 9% or whatever it is now they burn you on before you get paid! #@$%! USE A COMPLIANT CARRIER!! Make life easy for yourself!

MM would lead you to believe there is a DOT cop behind every bush, waiting to pounce on non-signed (as in company name and USDOT #) pick-up/trailer combos. I can tell you from experience that there is not. I bought a deckover gooseneck flatbed from a hot shotter. It came with tarps and straps. I bought it to move my son from Boston to Seattle. Because it was winter we took the southern route. I hauled a homemade plywood box, big enough to contain all his stuff covered by a professional grade tarp, a motorcycle parked sideways and his jeep, all strapped down tight with 10,000 pound ratchet straps. Our route took us through MA, CT, NY, NJ, MD, D. C. , VA, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, LA, TX, NM, CO, UT, ID, OR and WA. 19 states, driving past all scales, and not one time was I ever challenged for pulling what looked like a commercial hot-shot load. I parked the trailer at a friend's house near Tacoma. Five months later I moved a bunch of his stuff in the same homemade and tarped box, his motorcycle and his Toyota to TX. Once again I was never challenged, even though I drove past numerous scales.



The point is, there is no reason to be paranoid about the DOT. They have better things to do than hassle a guy pulling a tractor on a flatbed trailer. Helping a friend out and being re-imbursed for fuel and lodging is not commercial hauling. If you get greedy and want to make a BIG profit, that is something different. If your gross wt is over 26,000 that is something different. Let yout conscience be your guide.
