cummins just called and said my engine has three badly scored cylinder walls and the number one piston is melted. asking 11000 to replace with a refurbished engine.

Way out of my range. where can i find a decent buy on a good engine ?

Cummins can't say for sure , but they suspect it was from a injecter problem --feeding too much fuel.

i had the bosh 300 injecters in (same injecter as the 275's) , they said the cumputer is unable to tell when too much fuel is being fed to the cylinders with these injecters. ?? Also have the small edge box.

Never beat on the truck , strict maintenance program. Having a hard time justifing this one (second time)

You have a stock turbo, and no gauges, right???

Meltdown= VERY high EGT for an extended period. (pulling a hill while towing, top speed testing, etc. )

What happened to your first motor?

stock turbo 300 bosch injecters small edge egt-fuel and boost gauges 4" exhaust--jacobs exhaust brake--

was running perfect until we dropped injecter pump in Ga. replaced injecter (and starter) drove to South Bend Ind and truck quit

Egt's were running 950 boost and fuel pressure were fine.

First engine melted number 6 piston

Dont know if you are still looking for a replacement, but there are a couple of deals out on Ebay right now. 1999 with less than 10k, no reserve @ $1100 right now.

Also a dealer that has new 24v for $6000. Let me know if you cant find them.

Really? I was under the impression that was just getting near max temp post turbo.

It is. It's right on the borderline of "might melt, might not".

I should have said: too hot to be completely safe. I didn't mean to imply that 950 post turbo was certain death.

After all, he said it's PRE turbo anyway, so 950 should be safe all day forever.

It seems there's more to this than meets the eye. EGT is warm but not high enough to guarantee a meltdown.

I think some other culprits should be checked: piston oil squirters, etc.

Have you verified that the pyro is working properly?

Thanks a million. Would not have minded if it had been your auction , be ok to help another cummins person.

Cummins wants 2400 to install, seems high ?

does seem alittle high.

that would it's going to take a mechanic a whole week to do the swap.

I know its not an easy job, nothin on them is easy.

Invite a bunch of friends over for a keg party, just forget to tell them its a working party :)

good luck

Might also want to make sure your truck runs before the beer starts flowing.
