Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Need gauges; any reccomendations?

I just got a 98 12V. I would like to order a set of gauges for it in kit form with any special instructions or adapters specific to the 12V. Is there a vendor that you guys reccomend for this? What are your thoughts on which style of mounting to go with?

I dont think that any guages are going to come with specific instructions for your truck. Its pretty easy to put them in, it just takes time. I would go with Autometer, but thats my personal preference. Have been running them for years in the trucks and racecars. Awesome gauge. I have the phantom series.



As far as adaptors. What are you putting in? boost, pyro, maybe a transmission temp or oil pressure? The pyro is easy. Just drill the hole and tap the manifold and thats about it. The boost will take some monkey work the get everything in the head to work, at least it did on mine. Best time and money I spent on the truck though. Well maybe the gsk4 was... .

There are a few places around that sell them, Diesel Manor for one off the top of my head. Autometer sells them as a kit in the Z-series or Ultra-Lites. I've had bad luck with the Autometer pyros I've have.



I prefer Isspro's myself as they match up better to the OEM gauges to me and their a bit cheaper too. And their alil easier to install versus the Autometers or DiPricols.



But as for specific instructions with the gauges your outta luck. But below are some good links to read up on gauges.

On my 12v I preferred the Isspro's. If possible check out a local Bomb party. There will be lots of gauges placed in a variety of places.

I got the Isspro gauges through diesel manor and they did come with pretty good instructions. The instructions are for both 12 and 24V engines but it is clear which one they are talking about. The only gauge that the instructions were not clear on for a 12V motor was the fuel pressure which most people do not put on the 12V motors. I thought the instructions from diesel manor were quite easy to work off of.

When I get gauges for my new '98 12v I'm going with Autometer Sport Comp IIs, because they look good, and most of all the trans temp has a full-sweep face (versus the typical 90-degree sweep). I'm planning to get them from Rip @ Source Automotive. He quoted me a price I can't turn down.

If you have an automatic and want a temp gauge you can do what I did when I hooked up my fuel pressure gauge... . I bought the steering column pod and put my boost gauge in it leaving the pyrometer and fuel pressure in the pillar pod.

Definitley go with diesel manor. They are awesome. The price, the service, all of it.

I just installed a set of Isspro EV's last night on a 6. 0 ford, and the instructions that diesel manor sent were amazing. Full color photos, probably 15 pages or so worth. If you have never done gauges before, I think the instructions would probably be well worthwhile. They even said what wires to tap for dimming guage lights, etc.



As EKlem mentioned, the CTD packages some for 12/24v, but the instructions are pretty good for them too.

I just installed a set of isspro gauges with the mount yesterday that I got from City Diesel for $200. 00 + shipping. They didn't come with verry good instructions but, on Isspro's website you can download instructions. Between that and this forum they were easy to install. Just my $. 02

I just used a voltmeter and the fuse panel to find where to hook up the lights, all 3 gauges are hooked up to the same wire and they dim with the dash lights.

I agree with Matthug, I just used a test light and found the correct fuse for the lights and stuck the wire (with a fitting) into the back of that fuse panel. The lights dim just like the rest of the stock gauges.

I always use the dimmer feed to the radio. Usually with an aftermarket radio you dont use that circuit anyway, so I just run that wire to the pillar area.
