I've found a '94 Cummins 4X4, loaded power everything, cruise, "premium sound". Its also 3 to 3. 5 hours away from where i'm at. The only thing that concerned me was when I asked about the mileage. Its only $8,000. The guy said that it has 196,000 miles on it. To me, thats alot of miles. My rig has 167,000 and thats getting up there to me. Is it worth looking at to buy if it has 196k on it? I was just wondering what you guys thought about that, like if it was a good idea or not. Also is it worth the 3. 5 hour drive if it is. Thanks! I love my first gen truck, but would rather have the second gen. style. They are also louder it seems. Another question. Why are the second gen. cummins louder than the first gen. ? Thanks for all your imput!

I would say it is worth a look. These trucks are a lot more durable than cars, and my 1981 Dodge Diplomat has well over 322,000 miles on it (225 six) and it it far from dead, still gets compliments.

Go for it,you won't find another deal like that for awhile. If the truck was well maintained it's only halfway through it's life. Well worth the drive to check it out closer.

The motor is pretty much a non-issue, as long as they guy changed the oil and adjusted the valves. Being that it's a 4x4, keep youre eye on the front end... I pretty sure it turns 2:1... . meaning the truck has 200k miles on it, the front diff has 400k on it! Correct me if Im wrong on this one, guys!

Wow. See guys, I'm still pretty illiterate when it comes to the technical stuff like what 2:1 means. But I understand now. I'm catching on real quick. So you guys think its worth a look? Hehe, everyone I've talked to said "No way! 196,000 mi. on it? I wouldn't even consider looking at that!" So I'm like *Time to consult the boys at TDR*. So its only halfway done, huh? I knew the motor wasn't a problem. I was wondering about the truck itself. What kinds of things should I look at when I take my road trip? Any hints or tips on what tells me if its a good buy or not? If you ask me, $8,000 is a steal. But the mileage was what got to me. Any tips?

If it's in decent cond, and NOT bombed, I'd take it. Even if it need some work (tires, brakes etc) you can do things like that cheap.
The inj pump on the newer CTD is different than the first gen, and bigger. (and more bombable!!) I'm guessing this may be the noise you're refering to. #ad

I'm with the other guys. 196k is just getting broken in for these things. My 1st gen went by 400k a while back and I'm thinking about up-grading to a 2nd gen more to get the inline pump, intercooler and gated turbo than because the 1st gen is on its last legs. Like everybody says maintain 'em like they suggest and it probably could turn out to be a million mile engine.
Good luck, Jones

While I was shopping for 2 wheel drives,I ran across one advertised by Dave Smith. It's a '94 12v auto that has 181k on the clock and they priced it down to $8400 for it. The pic of it looked good, but Kellog is too far a drive for me just to go 'look'.
Hey Piers, you were looking for a project racer weren't you?

Does anybody think that I could sell my first gen for 8-$8,500? Its in perfect operating condition with 167k on it. New paint job, no rust or dents or scratches. The only thing is it needs the front end re-alingned and the can cover gaskets replaced. Is it possible? I think i'm going to take a road trip and look at that truck.
