Engine running while exhaust under water

I installed the DD stage 3 injectors, boost modul and K@N filter in Dec. and have loved all the power with no egt problems until the last month when I started towing my 8000# boat. After a trip to Lake Mead and then to Lake Havesu I have found it is vary easy to send the egt's threw the roof. On some long grades on I-70 I don't have the power to use OD where the egt's never get above 1200, but when I shift to Drive and the RPM's get above 2500 I can know longer use full throttle. Will a JRE exhaust really help or do I need a turbo housing? Larwance at DD recommended plugging the wastegate hose. Can this also help the egt's?

boatman, I'd start with the exhaust. That should really help. I've heard about pinching or closing off the wastegate. I haven't tried it, so I don't know. There are many members running DDIII's and a boost module and/or box without the HX40 and are keeping EGT's in check. I'm about to dive into that realm myself so we will see how it works out.

I don't know if the exhaust is mandatory or not, but I am willing to try anything because I love the power. I do have the boost elbow and my boost is 27 psi at 5500 feet and 30 1500 feet.

I think you can get by with an open 3". Most people don't like the sound and opt for a 4" with muffler. I'm going to try it with an open 3" and see how it does. I don't tow much and when I do, it's not on any hills, so I may be able to get away with it.

Hey guys!!
look into this for an exhaust upgrade.

From my local parts store I puchased a walker straight through 4" muffler, 2' of 3" pipe, 2-3"x3" connectors, 3- 3"x4" connectors, 1-3"x5" connector. With a mig welder a cutting torch, a 5" chrome stack off a Peterbuilt, and 2 hours of shop time,,,presto. I cut off the resonator, muffler, and tailpipe then welded in the huge muffler, added pipe as needed, and put a 13" long chrome tailpipe at the end. I have a 98 with a staight 3" and it does sound good, but the 01 with my custom exhaust is really cool. Cost less than $200.

boatman,

I've been reading up on advancing the timing & one of the benefits is lower EGT. I haven't had my 12V pump adjusted yet, so I can't verify, but is your 24V pump timing adjustable somehow?

Boatman - I have the DDIII, boost module, etc. with the 4in exhaust (also from DD) and while towing to and from May Madness with my 15,000 5er behind, I never saw over 1200 on the EGT (pre-turbo), and I wasn't driving slow. When we came across the top the temps in Death Valley and all over southern Nevada were over 110. The 4in exhaust is the way to go. If that isn't enough you could always change turbos.

Forrest I don't think timing is adjustable on the 24 valve unless you add the VA box which will advance timing but also add's more fuel. Rick G. 1200 deg. would be great. Do you ever have to run above 2500 RPM's with your 5 speed.

Boatman,
Got to go to 4" exhaust for lower egt's. The turbo housing will help also but I would try the 4" exhaust first.
Look at jardines exhaust as the cost is a lot less than others you might see out there.
Do a search under exhaust and you can pick up their Number.
Good luck

Boatman - as you can see from my signature I have the 3:54's, 5 speed, and 285 tires. 2500 rpm would be a little faster than I would care to tow in 5th (92 mph), and in fourth that is still 69 mph. My setup seems to work fine for me. The only thing that would be nice (and maybe down the road) would be eith a gear vendor or U S gear overdrive (just to split those gears a little)

Boatman, tell me if this is right. In overdrive you feel comfortable with egt at 1200. This is about the max you see. When you assault the more severe grades you are unable to stay in OD and upon going back to 3rd you are seeing exactly ? egt. It is my experience that upon increasing rpm the egt drops. What are you seeing in the way of egt that is causing you concern. If you plan to stay at this level of performance then you could consider plugging the wastegate like "L" said. More boost will decrease egt. Going to the 4" exhaust will also help egt. Beyond that a larger exhaust housing will drop egt by about 100 degrees per housing.
You should make sure you are getting all the air possible. You might consider an experiment, try the K&N 0880 and give us a report. Beyond that I will give you a Psychotty air system to test. First thing's first.

HVAC sometimes higher RPM's will lower the EGT's on a level road but when I climb the larger grades if I don't keep an eye on the EGT gauge I can see 1400 deg. at around 2700 RPM's if I am not careful on the throttle. I think I will order a 4" exhaust in the next couple of weeks and see how much that helps on my next trip to the pond.

Boatman,
My curiosity is up.
What kind of speeds are you talking about? You must be hauling pretty good up a hill at 2500rpm with that gearing and those tires! I have the stage twos, haul a 11k or so fifth wheel and never have an egt problem (even before the 4" exhaust).

Ron the speed limits are mostly 70-75 so that's where I like to cruise. My speedo reads 10% slow with my 295's so in drive with the converter locked up at 2500 RPM's speedo reads 64 and my GPS reads 70, at 2700 RPM's speedo reads 69 and the GPS reads 76.

HVAC,
He stated he has between 27 and 30 pounds depending on altitude. I think this is a clue.
He's pulling an 8,000# boat at 70 to 75 mph up and down some of the most varied (read up and down very very long steep grades) country in the USA. I'm sure with the a/c going full blast! I-70 is one grade after another up and over the Rocky Mountains. Salt Lake to Lake Mead has some ups and downs also.
Boatman, I sure would get the 4" exhaust and a Scotty System and go from there. Every little bit will help and me thinks you are going to need it!
Do you run one of those propellers when your trailer hitch isn't used? I think they are cool.....
Ron

HVAC my boost is 27 psi at the higher elevation and 30 at the lower ones. Do you think the exhaust is the best place to start?

Ron I have seen those propellers and I think they are pretty cool also, but I don't think the bearings can handle all that wind from the old 24 valver.
