I am looking for a dealer that can work on diesels (the 03 models) I live near Joliet IL. To repair the oil leak it, looks like it could be a major job. I haven’t put a post of my new truck yet because I don’t want to give a lot of praise before this is fixed. I have tried or called 4 dealers and here is how it goes.

Dealer: 1

They can work on them no problem. So I took it in to drop it off the night before. While waiting for my wife, the dealer pulled my truck in and started to work on it. I could see all of this as the mech cranked down on the oil pan bolts. I went over and asked if he found the problem he said yes the oil pan bolts where loose, it ‘s not leaking any oil now he said. I had to remind him that he didn’t start the engine. Still waiting for my wife, they pull my truck out and I follow the mech to the service desk . I asked if it’s done already and the service manger said yes. Again I had to tell him the truck ran for less than three minutes and the mech didn’t even look under the truck when he parked it. This goes on longer but I think you get the Ideal. They did finally put some dye in the oil and I drove it home. I never returned.

Dealer: 2

Called them. They were very honest, service manager said they didn’t have anyone certified on the 03s yet. But try dealer: 3.

Dealer: 3

Called them. They can work on all the trucks, so they say. Dropped it off the night before. Called them the next day at around 12:00. Service manager said they are trying to locate a big enough trans jack to handle the 6 speed. 2:00 They can’t do the job because they don’t have a big enough jack to remove the trans so they can see where it is leaking oil from. They too put dye in oil. When I went to pick it up that night I told them I had spoke to Chrysler and they said, if the dealer can’t fix it they can farm it out to someone who can. It’s just like a paint job or front end alignment. The service manager said (you will have to check around and see if another dealer can fix it). Again I took my truck home.

Dealer: 4

Can you work on the 03. We work on all the 1tons we get a lot of them in here. Yes but can you work on diesels. The say yes. I drop it off on a Tuesday morning, call them at 12:00 Service manager said the guy that works on the diesels is out on a test drive. 4:00 they couldn’t get to it. Wednesday they tell me it’s a rear main seal and it’s on order, it will come on Thursday. I call them at 4:00 and they said the trans will be pulled by tonight. I went down to see the seal that’s leaking. 4:30 they are looking for something to handle the trans. The mech shows me the oil leaking. I ask him for his uv light he said it’s in the back, I say just let my truck down and I will get the one from behind my seat. He just blows me off and continuous to talk about the leak and how hard it is to see the oil on the engine, because the engine is so shinny. I ask him if it’s the rear main why don’t I see it coming out the slot at the bottom of the trans he said because of it slinging it out through the bell housing. I remind him that I saw it coming from above the bell housing he said it will sling it all over. 4:50 all they have done is, removed the drive shaft in two days. Thursday I call and asked them if thy could put the drive shaft back on and I will pick it up later, that I needed to use the truck for Friday and it didn’t look like thy would have it done by then. I never received a ticket for their attempt. We had a much longer conversation then this but I wanted to keep this somewhat short.

So with all this I have a( 03 3500 dually HO 6 speed) With a oil leak that leaves about 1 tablespoon of oil in my drive. Each time I drive it.

That Stinks

Baker,

I've heard a lot of good things about Roanoke Motors in Roanoke IL. It's about 5 miles off of Rt 39 on route 116 between you and Bloomington. I do know that the techs have not been to 03 school yet, and I don't know the extend of the repair you need, but Brad in their service shop is the diesel tech and seems to be very good and careful. I had a power steering line leaking and my shifter was loose on the top of trans. These are easy compared to what you have going on, but I might be worth a shot. These guys are all country boys, from the farm and such. I stood right there in the shop when he did the repairs. It was cool because he didn't mind that I was out there. It was a learning experience because we discussed a lot of the other things with the truck too. Just two cents worth... :D

How many miles do you have on your truck?

I have the same motor and transmission as you and experienced an

oil leak within the first 1000 miles. I now only have 1800 miles

and the oil leak went away on it's own.

Better check my dipstick, maybe I just ran out.

Just kidding, it has stopped as the seals and what not have seated.

You might want to check your breather tube that has been known to blow some oil when under heavy load or during engine break-in when the engine has excessive blow by. until the rings seat you might see this. you cant do much about this except extend the tube.

I have 1800 miles on it with no change in the leak. I did think about the breather tub and from what I can see the dye traces up to the head on both sides. But it looks like more from the drivers side.

I will be dropping it off at Dealer#5 today. They may-not get to it for a few days. Also I spoke to Chrysler and they will be involved on this trip. The dealer told me up front that they can't do any major work because it would take some heavy equipment that they don't have. But if it's needed it would get farmed out to the local diesel mech.

Thanks for your help so far, I will keep you posted of all activity.

Don

Gettin' deep in the dealerships

What a load of horsecrap you got. I wish those mechanics and service managers would pull up their pants and be honest and considerate. You don't have to be 03 certified to find and diagnose an oil leak!

I hope that leak is above the bellhousing. If it is inside, then I would expect a new clutch too.

Cant believe they did'nt black light it. Have seen dye used many times if done correctly it shows perferctly clear. Have seen techs use it just to get truck out of shop and gone for the moment like it wont return later! The six speeds have been out a while. jacks should be on hand!Selling dealer needs to HANDLE this asap and offer other transportaion etc.

My 03 started leaking oil on the ground at 300 miles. It was running off the drivers side and down the engine to the bell housing and trans pan. Picked up some dye before I left for home Friday night and put the old black light on it. It was coming out of the valve cover right next to the intake elbow. That new cover looked like it used a reusable gasket, and based on import experience it should not leak. Pulled the cover off and the gasket looked good, but a small section in that area had popped out of the grove in the cover when I removed it. Pushed it back in, reinstalled the cover and washed it down with paint thinner and hosed it off good. Got about another 100 miles on it and dry as a bone.

My local dealer could not find the new gasket listed when I called, so good thing I didn't need it.

I've heard good things about the diesel mechanic at Dodge City in Rochelle, IL. located at 88 and 251. I would have bought my truck there, but I got a better trade in at another dealer.

Good luck Don; I know how frustrating bonehead dealers can be. You did the right thing getting Chrysler involved so you'll have a good paper trail. Hopefully you'll get that referral to a good diesel shop and that'll be the end of it.

I too had an oil leak that was running down the side of the block and getting all over the transmission. I traced it back and it originated from under the new plastic covering on the valve cover.

I took this plastic cover off, and found what looked like a new filtering system for the crank case breather pipe. This filter was Mickey Moused to the breather pipe with a rubber sleeve that had expanded with the heat and was leaking onto the metal valve cover, flowing back and down the side of the block. I put a hose clamp on each end of this rubber connector and that seems to have solved the problem. Hope this helps.

oil or fuel?

I have what I thought was an oil leak, that seems to be

diesel fuel. I can't tell exactly where it is coming from but

is coming around the drivers side and dripping off bell housing.

Who can tell me the characteristics of what the crankcase breather tube will do. The truck was idling in the drive way

after being plugged in but not run for several days.

By the looks of the light color evaporated stains on my garage floor it has been doing it for a while.

Am I just not broke in yet, not seated rings etc?

2000 miles, no towing yet (no hitch)

Will post seperate if not replied.

Thanks

Eric
