I'm thinking about adding some stacks on my 96,,,However I have a A. R. E. utility cap on it, and was wondering if there are any ideas out there on how I can go threw the cap with the stacks and make it weather tight.....

rjones,

This may be a long shot, but here goes... ...

You may try a high performance marine parts supplier. There are sealing rings made for through transom exhaust pipes that just may work to seal the stacks as they go through your cap. Usually the riser pipes are water jacketed, so there may be some issues with heat tolerance. A great place to try is http://www.cpperformance.com , they've got everything you can think of for marine high performance.

Do a search on stacks. Someone on here last year put a set on with a tonneau cover and put some type of heat rings on the cover. By now he could surely let you know how they worked.

Run them up the outside of the truck just behind the doors. Then they will not interfere with the cap or anything else in the cargo area. Either come from under the sheet metal of the bed, or come out through it at about bottom-of-frame height. Five inchers with turn-outs at about two feet above the top of the cab. ;) Enjoy!

I have had my stacks on well over a year now and they go through my tonneau cover with about 1/8 inch clearance around the stack. The pipes don't get as hot as you think and very little water will come in the hole, what does come in will run down the pipe and out the hole in the bed.

If I were to do it I would put the holes in the cap first and build the stacks to fit the holes as the pipes are adjustable and the holes in the cap are not.

Good Luck

Thanks... . I'm still tossing it around a bit... . kinda scared cutting 2 holes in a 2500. 00 cap:( ... . But I defenetly need it water tight..... Rick

How about a pipe that is slightly larger dia than your stacks? Then you could seal both the top and bottom with the actual stack inside. With the airspace, the outer pipe wouldn't get hot either. Any water would go thru the outer pipe and not get into the bed. You would probably need some kind of spacer to support the inner pipe using the outer pipe. Only problem might be running w/o the cap. (unless you can firmly mount the outer pipe and keep it attractive) Of course removing the cap will take some higher lifting any way you go, so I doubt that will happen much.

Let me know what you come up with.

FWIW: Running a pipe up inside another pipe may cause the larger pipe to be a huge-mongous reverberating annoyance. I did this on my truck and the noise in the cab was insane.

I was thinking of useing something like a flashing for vent pipe on a house only made of metal that I can paint or some kind of hi temp rubber flashing that would be flexable... ...
