My son has a 1999 24v CTD. Last night he was on his way home and it died. No warning sign, no spit and sputter, just died. Would start back but run very rough and would not rev up. Would this be a possible lift pump failure and how do I check without a pressure gauge?

Were any codes pulled? I'm thinking more on the lines of a VP failure... . without a FP gauge the lift pump probably went south a long time ago. I've never experianced either failure so maybe someone will chime in with simular symptoms to the no spit and sputter, just died scenerio.

I'm not sure if this will work on a 99 but I found this the 24V FAQ section.

Bring a pencil and paper to write down the numbers.

Key in the ignition, engine off

Turn the ignition to the run/on position (do not start)

Back to off

On

Off

On and leave on. Leave the ignition in each position at least 3/4 of a second. If you are too fast, or too slow, it will not complete the cycle.

In the odometer window the on board computer will show two sets of codes (if any) PCU and ECU followed by P DONE.

If this don't work I guess your only other option since the truck is dead would be to buy/borrow/rent a scanner tool at the local auto parts store.

My son's CTD stopped just exactly like that last week. A wire connection went bad on the pusher pump. Pump stopped, engine quit within 10 seconds. No sputtering, nada. Just dead.

Since he was up in the mountain country, he called me on the cell phone and I carried up a new lift pump (Holley this time) and he installed it. When moving the wires over, a connection came apart in his hands.

So, verfiy you got power to the pump. If so, then the pump is bad. Bumping the starter without trying to start the engine will make the pump run for 25 seconds (or try to).

Stupid question but is he sure there is fuel in the tank?

The ignition switch trick (on-off-on-off-on) won't work on a '99. You'll have to have some type of scanner.

We checked the lift pump. It runs and we loosened test port on top of filter and got good fuel pressure. Took #1 injector line completely off and turned engine over and got no fuel. Is there a fuel shut off that would keep the VP44 from pumping or is the vp dead? Is there a way to check before pulling the VP44 and replacing? Need Help please. Also shows code 1688. Tried the jumper test on the electrical pins #6 and #7 but truck still would not start. Took several of the injector lines off and it is getting some fuel to the injectos but not sure if it is enough. With the line completly off how much pressure should there be? Fuel will come out but not spray every where. I would think it would have a fair amount of pressure. Does this sound like the VP is dead?
