OK, here's the deal I pull trailers 75% of the time i can't seem to figure out why I can't get the EGT's a little lower. I have done a bunch of research and can't seem to narrow it down. I have A drop in K&N right now have had a K&N intake wasn't worth the money. I was thinking of doing the BHAF for S**T's and Giggles, to see if that would help, but i need some advice. Also when I get the A/C running while pulling, even light loads , up light grades the temp guage really jumps. I want to keep this think a little cooler. Any help?

I like my Scotty II, Keeps thing cooler

4" Exhaust helps keep things cooler (it does not care if it is aluminized)

Check your Radiator for plugging from a Crankcase Breather Bottle. If you still have one of these bottles on the truck, even if you can not see it, your radiator is more than likely plugged.

This might help lumberjack (Sign. ), i don't have a bottle down on the breather. I have checked the radiator can see a little dirt plan to wash out tomorrow. Would a Air intake help? Where do i get a scotty? I have heard alot about them but can't seem to find 'em. I had a muffler shop put the 4" on but never really looked to see if it has any bad bends or not.

You post 4" all the way, is this for real? Or does it neck back down before and back up after the turbo? Only other thing I can think of might be to have the intercooler checked for leak down. If they leak, and some say they all eventually do, that this inhibits performance negatively. About half the big trucks leak from the factory, at least Freightshakers do. Propane will cool it some, but that's a whole nuther PITA.

OK, I will ask because no one else has asked. What are your EGT running and are you pre or post turbo with your probe? SNOKING

More air = lower EGTs. My truck ran 1300 degF pre-turbo EGT @ 21 PSIG boost in stock configuration when towing our previous 13,500 GVWR 5th wheel. Adding the BHAF wasn't worth 50 degF drop in EGT. I added the 4" exhaust and Edge EZ (with boost elbow) the same weekend, so I can't quantify the relative contribution of each change, but EGTs dropped to 1100 degF @ 30 PSIG boost, primarily due to the increased boost (mass airflow) and advanced injection timing of the EZ. If you don't want to go with an EZ, more boost can be obtained with a boost fooler and boost elbow (HX35-12W turbo) or turnbuckle (HY35-9W turbo).

The overheating issue is probably due to a fouled radiator or bad thermostat.

Hey Everyone i am sorry i havn't been able to update. I am talking about both, the EGT and the Engine temp! I washed out the radiator the other day seemed to help a little. So that might be ok. Although i would like to find out about getting more air. Is the BHAF the way to go or is stock just fine? I Checked the EGT probe and it was installed post turbo, but never had any problems. Whats best for more air?

On my 96' the Scotty II made a difference of about 100deg when towing. It will increase cabin noise if you drill for the cowl opening. Adding a Tag will help with the turbo whistle. Never did run Tag II.

Put a new thermostat in it, to lower the coolant temp, I installed a 180* in mine an it runs very cool now.

As far as the EGT's, take note of the other members, on a stock truck, an Edge EZ and boost elbow will give you more power and less EGT. Couple that with an aftermarket intake and a full 4" exhaust and... ... ... presto... ... . cool temps. Hope this helps.

I have the superchip tuner, boost elbow, and 4" straight exhaust still runs a little to hot for me. I will try the 180* thermostat you wouldn't have any Part #'s For that would you?

Can you give us the numbers that you are trying to lower and are you checking egt's pre or post turbo?

Gauges!!! Watch them & know/what they're telling you!!!

COJ,

That's why most of us have gauges... . I watch mine as a maintenance practice & most guys do. . But not all... . If I can get to the top of the grade & it takes me twice the time, but I don't need a towtruck to get me there, I don't care about time... . These engines are expensive & the gauges (for me) are so I know what's going on... I can even tell when I've gotten a bad load of fuel & my filter needs changing... . I like to put my foot in it with the best of them... Especially when a ricer is even with my pipe... But Never at the expense of destroying my engine.

Thanks for all the honest input guys... I have lots to learn & TDR is helping me with that... . I should say "you guys are"

Respectfully,

Jim

cummins part # for 180 t-stat is 3697195 for my truck... ... should be for yours as well.

i don't think you're telling these guys enough to help you. i'm often wrong though.

good luck, jeff

1200 degrees post turbo :--) I think most people back out like 8 to 900 degrees post turbo. That is way hot for a stock truck
