I got my cam and lifters back from Colt Cams. Thought I had a magnet made with a 5 lb magnet, a small washer and Gorilla Glue, but glue did not hold. Making another one with JB Weld, but wondering if there was a better option. I know I have to pull out my lifter tray to get the lifter to turn the corner and need some confidence in the magnet I am using.

Take apart an old hard drive or two - those magnets inside will make your fingers bleed while trying to pry them off :)

I have used a string with a cone shaped plug to pull the lifters up and into place. There might be too much chance of the magnet catching a sharp edge and dropping a lifter, shudder!.

Rubber stopper to pull into place, turn lifter tray over to hold lifter up, wood dowel to hold in place.

I think Joe D wrote the how to, shoud be somewhere here on the TDR. Found it, search is your friend...

Joe Says "The 12” x ½” dowel pins, with chamfer and hacksaw slit in one end, fit snugly into recesses in the tops of the lifters to lift them up against the mushroom feet against the bottom of the lifter bores in the block. You need to make a trough from 2” exhaust pipe to catch the lifters when you pull the dowel out after removing the camshaft. You will use a 36” long ½” dowel with hooks screwed into the ends. The tight hook grabs the string just behind the stopper, and the loose hook pulls out the lifters. You can use a brass tube 3/16” or ¼” diameter, 11. 4” long to help guide the stopper down the right hole in the block. With the engine on a slant from the factory, the stopper tends not to go into the lifter hole. I use a Danco 00 beveled faucet washer, ½” OD, part number 88579, instead of a stopper to fit into the top of the lifter. Procedures and photos appeared in TDR #33, pp. 46-48. "

I`d set my magnet up in a healthy gob of clear silicone, after all surfaces were cleaned thoroughly, then rinsed with alcohol. 12hr dry time in 60-70F temps, and shes really stuck.

good luck

When I did the KDP on my '96, I went to Auto Zone and bought 12 of those pencil magnets at about $. 99 each.

I figured out the length I needed and duct taped all of the extensions to that length so each was fairly solid.

Put the magnet end on the lifter, pulled up and then tie-wrapped the magnet to the rocker tower.

Kinda hard to do unless you're born w/3 hands, but, it worked for me.

Go to a Cat dealer and buy a can of "green glue", the parts guy will know what youure talking about... Put some on the magnet, some on the washer, let the glue start to haze over then put the washer and the magnet together. Give it about 1 minute and they are permanently put together. If you beat it with a hammer, the magnet will break somewhere else before the green glue gives up.

I ended up using a rubber 1/2" faucet washer and put a small stove bolt thru the hole in the washer. I welded the nut onto the threads and welded a flat washer to the head of the bolt. Using some 16 lb. test string tied off to the washer, I was able to pull them all into place and got the cam installed. Thanks to all for the help and suggestions.
