Sounds like I have a bad u-joint up front. I figured the rear one is clunking, I might as well replace both fronts and the rear.

I heard that spicer is making a new one call spicer life? Not sure if it's true.

Would like some input from members on other aftermarket joints. I often use the 4wd to pull a 17,000lb trailer out of the woods (cutting firewood).

Thanks guys!

Just put in the Precision 295A U joints got mine a Rock Auto ( wouldnt buy there again) but the u joints are fine. Like the ability to grease also, didn't really need center bearing but put it in anyway, oil seal's trans and rear end. I dont want to take it apart again for a long time,

Here are the spicer numbers for end to end on the truck. FYI, the Life Series ujoints are non greasable. They are a better design but non-greasable.

The Front AXLE U-Joints are: SPICER 5006813

The rear shaft takes a 1410 series at each end: SPICER 5-801X (should be one more for 2 piece)

The front shaft takes a 1330 series at the pinion: SPICER 5-795X

The two at the CV are a 1350 series: SPICER 5-799X

The greasables are here:

Rear driveshaft 2 Piece precision (takes 3)

Precision #351(A) (Manual)

Precision #295 (Auto), Neapco 3-0486

Front driveshaft Cardan H joint (takes 2) Precision #232

Front driveshaft @ front axle (takes 1) Precision #235

Front Axle U joints LEFT AND RIGHT (takes 2) Precision #464

These take some grinding on the clips to fit correctly. The groove is a little to narrow and offset a little too deep for a perfect fit.

U-joints

Thanks for the replies guys. My neighbor has a repair shop and said he will do both fronts and the two on the driveshaft for $400 labor. I don't have the time or desire right now. He has always been fair with other repairs so it didnt seem out of line. What do you think?

Make sure that you also get the ball socket in the double cardan on the front drive shaft replaced as well. My front drive shaft was giving me problems last winter. I had a local shop replace the u-joints with the Precision greasables and they found that it was the ball socket that was giving me all the trouble (and the noise).

Thanks Tim,

Do you know the part number for the ball socket?

I was going to order the parts cerberusiam suggested (see below)

Eric, unfortunately I don't. I supplied the shop with the u-joints and they are the ones that caught the problem with the ball socket. However, I got all of my Precision u-joints from rockauto.com. They had the best prices for the u-joints that I got, but I don't think they carry Spicers. You might want to check their website or maybe Napa.

My early '04 HO HD has a 11. 5" rearend. It uses a 1485 series u-joint in the rear driveshaft. The 1485 is a AAM special that is . 010" smaller endcap to endcap (4. 178 versus 4. 188). The 1480 fits if it has to. I have Precision 351's in mine. The snap rings are tight.
