Need some info - goofy cummins - 8.8?

Thanks, TDR Staff

Ever heard this one before?

No more oil changes for me.

We just got a motor delivered to school by cummins inc. that I absolutely cannot find any info on. The data tag says it's a case/cummins. The model is 6DT8. 8

The motor is comparable in size to an ISC but, just different. I cannot find ANYTHING on his thing. Does anyone have any info? The tag shows 325hp.

Anyone?

Are you sure its not a6CT8. 3instead of a 6DT8. 8, easy to miss on a dirty tag. Case used a lot of C8. 3's, at 325hp I would expect it to be a 6CTA8. 3 (A= air to water aftercooler).

I'll have to double check it today, I have to go down to the shop later. I'll try to snap a pic too if it's not just a dirty tag

You are correct in it being an 8. 8. When i worked for a pump company we started installing these. I believe they are a 24 valve motor that has a common rail fuel injection setup that is done by computer. THey are alright from what i have seen. Cummins can reflash the computer to a lot higher output on those. A CUmmins mechanic same out to our shop one day and he let me check out his laptop and all of the fueling programs. It was pretty sweet.

Yeah, it's a 24v with a big cast aluminum one piece valve cover... Thought it had a rotary pump though... Could be wrong though

Go to your local Case-IH dealer. See if they have any sales lit. for a tractor or something else that might have it. MX Magnum series tractors probably or the small 4x4 tractor ( STX 275?, unless it has the L-10 or M-11 in it). Haven't looked at the engine on either one, but heard they don't have the 8. 3L, it is something else, if memory serves me.

Could it be a prototype engine, if not used in production yet? We had some test engines at the school I went to, but nothing unusual like that.

Thanks for all the info so far. One of my teachers gave me the mission of trying to find info on this thing... We are at least trying to hunt down a service book for it. The motor looks almost like it would fit nicely in place of a 5. 9 :)

I found that too, seems wierd, cummins lists the ISL as 540in, 8. 9l

The data tag on that case motor shows 538 in 8. 8l

The injection pump appears to be a CAPS as currently used on both ISC and ISL.

I'm also thinking this is the short lived 24 valve M series, but will double check tomorrow.

The fastest way to verify which engine you received is to use the CPL 2908 and call the local Cummins house.

FWIW

This is a low mount turbo (exhaust to rear) with a clutch bell housing; the water pump pulley appears new for a nonaccessory (alternator & AC) drive and the air compressor is deleted.

What turbo is on the engine?

I am not sure on the turbo, I'll probably stop in the shop tomorrow and check out some more details, gotta run down that direction so my roommate can pickup his ram from the body shop...

Sure enough has a CAPS pump, and it looks as if the pump has had some repairs. I tried serial#46098275 and it comes back invalid. 46098276,277,278 all come back invalid, so I bet this is a Case engine only thing. Serial #46098274 was a 6B of sorts so I can't get anywhere on the Quick Serve system for you.

A Johnson, appreciate your time. I'll see if I can get a better pic of the data tag tomorrow...

Please forgive my ignorance, what's a CAPS pump?

Cummins Accumulator Pump System

Cummins had a fallout with Bosch so they created an injection pump to outdo the VP series. CAPS has an integrated lift pump and uses engine oil for primary mechanical lubrication. It outdid the VP series by a long margin in failures. It was close to the worst disaster ever produced by Cummins. The second generation (& up) CAPS is much better.

gm's 305 v8 is called a 5. 0 liter

ford's 302 v8 is called a 5. 0 liter

gm's 350 v8 is called a 5. 7 liter

ford's 351 v8 is called a 5. 8 liter

Here's what I found

Cummins NEVER produced an 8. 8l engine. Base on the parts list from the CPL it is an ISL or 8. 9 liter engine. Cummins could not get a fix based on the CPL, but it did give a parts down which inlcuded ISL articulated pistons. Articulated pistons are a steel crown with aluminum skirt.

I'll use the engine no to get more info.

I boofed on the M series guess. M's are an 11 liter.
