Hoping someone can provide any information and opinions on a truck I found on a local carlot.

I been looking at a 2002 4wd, extended cab, long bed with the HO option. The truck has 74k miles on it. I took the truck home and drove it over the course of an afternoon and put about 90 miles on it. The truck has an Edge EZ installed and the previous owner says that was the only thing done to the truck. It has a lot of power and excellerates quickly so I wonder what else could have been done or if that much power can come from an Edge EZ. The truck is at a local dodge dealership and I think they have had it for a while. I hooked up a pressure gauge to the fuel pump knowing of the inherent lift pump problems with these truck (my dad has a 2001 3500 and on his second lift pump), I got 14 psi at idle. Other glaring thing I found wrong was the AC system was half empty of refrigerant, which they have since fixed. For it's age, the truck does have a lot of miles on it. It also appears to have orignally had heated power mirrors, but now has the flip out towing mirrors. There is a hida-a-ball goosneck plate in the bed and I see evidence of a brake control installation so it was used for pulling. Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for with the truck? My next trip there I am going to flip the ignition switch three times and check for codes.

Currently I got them down to $21k plus tax for the truck. Good deal or no? Bank told me loan value on the truck was $25 but I wanted to hear more opinions that just a bank since they are always willing to make a buck :)

Thanks!

Sounds like a good truck and a decent deal. The EZ will make it FEEL like it has more power than it does because of the way it screws up the pedal.

74K is nothing for mileage, if it was used for towing. Towing is GOOD for these engines, as it makes them run better in the long run. All the mega-mileage CTDs have towed a LOT. I think running them empty with lots of cold starts is probably worse than towing.

Yeah I was thinking that it is a good deal. The interior is in really good shape, although it doesn't have the SLT package with the lumbar supports in the seat. It also has a nice set of BFG KO's on it as well.

Dangit! I just realized who you are! How is Wyoming??? I moved out of Huntington Chase. Got my own house now, but trying to get a PCS to Europe.

You may want to check out the clutch - get on the highway, put it in 5th gear and accelerate WOT starting at 1500 RPMs. My 01 HO with an EZ started slipped the stock clutch about one week after installing the EZ.

Also look for the other signs of problems - bubbling in the radiator while running, oil in the coolant, low coolant, burnt fluid in the transfer case, diff fluid levels, etc.

Think the price is reasonable. My son pickup up an 01 auto shortbed 4x4 last Dec for 19K. 85K miles, with full leather and all the options.

What doesn't smell right is that you say it has been sitting on the lot. Why? These things usually fly off the lot.

It's the demographic I live in is why it's been sitting there. It's an extended cab long bed with a manual transmission. Most people around here want short beds and autos.

You get really good deals on manual transmission vehicles in this area. I guess people are lazy or something?. ?. ?

Hey TAZ!! Long time! You're not on here too much, so I'm glad I caught you.

You're right about the demographics. They had to go to Tennessee to get my 6-sp 4x4. Freaking Bill Butler put their dumb logo on my tailgate:( I don't remember being paid to advertise for them:confused:

Probably a fair deal but I want a six speed and leather with the laramie pkg that looks and feels new. I don't care if it is 01 or 02 as long as it fits the bill. In my case the bill was $23k... ...

Sounds like a great deal, i bought mine for 24,000 plus tax, after the trade (96 GMC Jimmy) and taxes it came up to 24,500 even. I too had to drive to Greenville Tennessee to buy my truck(had to take the dealership sticker off it shamed the truck, lol Lawson Chevrolet is where i bought it), it was towed with (mostly horse and hay trailers) and has 70,000 miles on it now (61,000 when i bought it) It is not very fancy in options(almost non existent, manual windows, seats, locks, and mirrors, basically power nothing) It has the HO CTD and 6 speed transmission, it is also a 4x4 longbed extended cab, I think the deal you found if it is kosher is awesome jump all over it.

I bought my 02 back in March, with 32,000 miles, never driven in snow and fully loaded for around 26,000. Yours sounds like a pretty good deal, good luck with it.

Stock clutch

If its a HO 6 speed, (if its not a 6 speed its not a HO motor) it will probably slip the clutch in 6th at about 1900 to 2100 RPM with Edge on, but you may not be able to detect the slippage unless you have a trailer behind it to hold it back. Thats no big deal. The real question is: has the clutch been slipped many times before! How does it feel when you engage it? Smooth? Jerky? Any noise? clutch replacement is not cheap in a CTD with the 6 speed. Other than that if there is no oil in the radiator and no water in the oil, sounds like a good deal to me. I wouldn't take $21K for my 97. Ken Irwin

Check the engine data plate

The engine data plate will give you your engine's horse power. Up until mid 03 the HO engines were uses exclusively with the 6 speed manual transmission. I. E. if you have 6 gears you have a High Output (HO) engine. The horse power does change over the different model years that they were available though. Ken Irwin

Just got back from the dealership today. They came down to about 20500 on the truck. 22393 with tax and stupid fees.

Clutch felt great the same as my dad's 01 3500 that has no mods. I didn't detect any slippage but I didn't try pulling anything with it while I had it for a day (I should have). But I did whale on it on the interstate plus general abbusive driving (i. e. I tried to drive it like my '90 ZR1 Corvette that has a ZF6 transmission in it ;)

Get some sort of written guarantee on that A/C leakage - it can get expensive working on or repairing slow leaks in these systems - a quick refrigerant refill might work for a while (long enough to get it off the lot!), but that refrigerent had to go somewhere - and most likely thru a bad seal or other leakage point...

Yeah I am all too familiar with AC issues. I actually have my Section 609 certs and working to get my section 608. I have all the AC equipment at home to do the work minus a recovery unit. But I didn't tell them that ;) They said the only leak they found was around the fittings using the sniffer, which is to be expected.

Yeah I'm still going to hold out a day or more. Let them call me back cause I honestly don't have to have a truck right now, my '95 is still running good. And the fact is I am the most interested person they have had since they got the truck which was now almost 3 months ago!

Make them change all fluids in it, front to back. And give you 90 days on that A/C. Sounds like a deal for 20. 5k. What color is it , I might come get it!
