Hi, I have a '96 2500 and I would like to get the dowel pin taken care of before anything bad happens. I was wondering if any of you guys know if Cummins sold a kit to do this. If not, which kit works out the best? Thanks!

You need to either tear the front end of the truck and motor apart so you can put a KDP tab in (TST has the kit ) . Or you have to find a local shop that has the jig and can drill and tap it for you.

I would recomend doing the tab, you can get all the parts from Cummins. It is not much more work than the drill and bolt fix and you can check/lock-tite the other bolts under the cover. Here are the Cummins part #. You should be able to get away without the front gasket and just use some sealant.

You would have to replace the front housing with the updated one to retain the pin w/o the tab, this is a BIG BIG job (pull the cam)

Seal 3804899 ($28. 80)

Gasket 3918673 ($23. 05)

Tab 3958017 ($1. 00)

Thanks for the info. Now I just have to find someone to do the job. Does anyone have any idea how much this annoying problem will set me back. Thanks again.

I used the TST kit. Very good directions and had everything you needed. Could have gotten the individual parts, but the TST seemed the easier method. Took me a total estimated time of 2 Hours.

When I checked mine I didn't buy anything but a new front seal. I felt that if I found that I did not have the improved timing housing with the stepped dowel pin hole(which I did), that I would simply use a chisel to create two burrs that would trap the dowel pin in place. If I would have found the pin sticking part way out of the hole, I would have pulled the pin out with pliers and threw it away. No repair kit is needed.

Ronan;

would it be possible to find out where you are located?? Maybe someone in your area might chime in here and offer to help you do this repair. What better way to get to know your truck than get your hands greasy,, and save a couple bucks. A shop is going to charge about $80. 00 per hr, your lookin at $200. 00-$300. 00 to have a shop do it. If you can get them to do it. I was intimidated when I done mine, But when finished PRICELESS Also learn how to do the overhead. More money saved. Oo.

Just my penny's worth

Ronan,

Email me at -- email address removed -- for instructions on how to do the job. The gasket and seal kit should be less than $30 at Cummins. You can make the tab pretty easy.

If the pin is sticking out a little pulling it won't work. It's too hard and slick to get hold of.

Hi, well I live in San Antonio, TX and wouldn't mind getting my hands dirty. I just bought this truck 2 months ago and haven't turned a wrench on it yet. I ordered the parts today and they won't be here until Thursday or Friday. Thanks for the info, everyone has been very helpful. Andy

Thats a good choice. I know there are guys in your area, that will help if they hear about your plight. Get a repair manual, I got a Haines its more complete than the chiltons. But a cummins is your best bet, but cost quite a bit more. Don't for get the bolts that hold the case mounted to the block. The five bolts in there should be torqued to 18 ft lbs as should be the cover bolts. There is one under the cam gear you need to use a open end wrench on, and this wrench should be bent to reach it. there are photos of this wrench in here some place. A very sight "S" bend. Some guys have said they found Two under there. Have fun with it.

PS If the bolts are loose re-lock tite them. They need to be secure beyond all dought.

Most shops will charge $325. I wonder what the kit will cost if all the time and travel is figured in of you time taken. How much is your time worth?

Just wondering.

I believe if you look at that way, you pay for every thing you do. I could say, or to justify my feelings, my time is worth $100. 00 per hr, so have someone else do it for me. But if I break down on the road my own hands might get me going again. My understanding, The kit from Cummins is around $50. 00-60. 00 complet pluse shipping. Is't this site about doing stuff your self? I believe that experience is what life is about, and teaching if possable is pricless.

I am not intending to start a battle here, just trying to make a point. Get your hands dirty.

I agree with Marv, but for different reasons. I get more satisfaction doing any of the work I have to ability to do. Plus, I have seen some socalled "professional" work that is really bad. If I mess it up I know who to blame. Most of the time my work is better than work done by a shop anyway.

That was not my point. I get the same satisfaction. I was just wondering how much was saved by doing it yourself. And I agree, some "pros" are idiots. I guess you gotta know you tech, or at least have a good reference to go to him.

And marv, the only time my hands are not dirty, is when I'm playing my dobro. (figure of speach) Don't take that as a totally true statement. I'm got my feeling hurt enough.
