Help!My Brother-in-law crossing to the other side....Ford!

Just found out that Nevada passed a bill that went into effect 10/1 requiring diesels under 10001 GVW to have an annual smog check. (The limit used to be 8500) So now all of the 3/4 tons have to be smogged each year in Las Vegas and Reno.

I wondered what specifically they look for. I know there are some high HP Nevada trucks on this site and wondered if they are going to have any trouble? My 99 is stock and my 97 is near stock, but it does smoke more then the 99.

I couldn't find anything on the DMV web site that gives the specifics of what is being checked, and the tech at the 1 local place that can do diesel checks didn't even know they had raised the limit. Who is the first NV 3/4 member to renew his tags?

You can be sure that whatever the reason was for this law change, it was purely motivated by political interest and revenue. Nevada has to be one of the most corrupt states in the country... yes, worse than Kalifornia. Kalifornia will at least follow their own laws, but Nevada will make stuff up as they go along.

The easy way around this is to get an address outside of Washoe county so the smog check doens't affect you. Me, I'll be registering my truck out of state next year as I usually do. The ONLY reason my truck has NV plates right now is because the dealer paid my reg fees as a condition of the deal. No way would I have forked over $757 of my own money to this corrupt state.

BTW, we both live in the same area...

Don't get into a panic over that one... ... the only way to fail that test is if your truck smokes like a 1800's locomotive going up a grade, here are some details:what they are looking for is more then 40% opacity, what that very expensive computer does is it takes a sample of the exhaust under load ,passes it true a light,if less then 40% of the light is restricted, you pass.....

I had customers with old M/B diesel that smoked like a chimney and still passed with 30-35%,as a matter of fact in 3 years in reno working on diesels I never heard of anyone who failed the test, but that was years ago.

Is Sierra diesel still the only place to get smoged in Reno?... . Joe

I believe you can register your vehicle in any county regardless of which county you live in. For you Reno folks it would be a short trip and probably a helluva lot easier if you went to Churchill county and had a nice lunch in Fallon.

One of the guys I work with has a 99 F-250 diesel and his tags are up next month but his renewal didn't have any smog check requirements. DMV might be dragging their feet implementing this. My tags are up in January - they will probably get it figured out just in time for me!
