I have seen a similar article recently.

Now the new 2003 Cummins Turbo Diesel engine produces a class-leading 555 lb. -ft. of torque at 1,400 rpm and 305 horsepower at 2,900 rpm, while dramatically reducing engine noise.

What I don't understand is the 305 HP @ 555 lb. ft. of Torque. We have guys here producing 300 HP with torque greater than 555 lb. ft. :confused:

Someone please educate me:rolleyes:

I'm sure you know that is stock #'s but if I remember they said the power increase was with software only:D Give me a reflash please:--)

Hey DieselDog,

I could be corrected, but I think this is the new high pressure common rail system that posts these numbers. It was supposed to appear May 1st but has been pushed back to October. This is not just a software re-flash. It is a totally different, multi injection, high pressure common rail like the Duromax now uses. At least that is what our Dodge dealer is saying and this is backed up by some of the other publications.

I know it said 2/3's of the parts are new I'll check again.

Yes I just went back and it said the power was from programing and upgrades may be available. . Look in the article Steve did in the begining under engine.

Big Daddy,

Hp is torque as a function of time. The new engine makes 305 peak hp at 2900 rpm (high in the rpm band). The guys here that bomb their trucks and make 300 hp make that peak amount lower in the rpm band, so that means their engine is producing more power at lower rpm, hence the higher output torque. I guess what I am trying to say is that the bombed current engines have higher hp at lower rpm than the new one at the corresponding rpm. Did that make any sense or did I screw up what I was trying to say? :confused:

BTW, thanks for all the info Steve.

Steve THANKS for the great info on the new trucks. It must have been cool to see the trucks first hand.

Diesel Dog states: I know it said 2/3's of the parts are new I'll check again.

Does this mean the rest of us got used parts on our new trucks?:D I just couldn't resist:D :D :D

Hale,

Let another Aggie have a crack at 'splaining the touque vs. hp business!

HP in an emperical derivation based on torque and rpm. I actually still remember the formula from, I think it was ME446:

HP = 2 x Pi x rpm x torque / 33,000

plugging in figures for the new motor, and solving for the torque at 2900rpm:

T = 33000 x 305hp/2pi x 2900rpm = 552. 3ftlbs

this means that in order to produce 305 hp at 2900 rpm, you need to be making 552 ftlbs of torque. While lots of guys are making greater than 552 ft lbs max torque, I doubt if many of us are still cranking out this much at 2900rpm.

I'd hope to be well past 600 ft/lbs at about 18-1900rpm... .

Lemme see

HP = 2*3. 14*600*1900/33000 = 217 hp... .

I guess I should've dynoed it last saturday... .
