New Air intake system

That filter looks a bit small in that big box. I said it before, and I will say it again. I want a box for my BHAF that uses cold air. Paper filters for me.

Stick, In talking with him, I got the impression he wants to deal only through his dealer network, but we could always approach one of them. There is one right by my work. One thing I did stress to him is that the Dodge people are a picky bunch and make sure that the quality is good and everything fits or he will never hear the end of it. ( Don't worry CAnderson, I didn't mention your name :-laf )



Illflem, your idea would be real easy with this box. The rear outlet might be a little tight for that but the box has lots of flat areas on the side that would be real easy to cut another outlet in.



The filter is obviously much smaller than the Scotty filter so how well this system works will depend on the flow numbers of the element. My guess is that it would be fine for up to medium range bombing.

I know this has nothing to do with the Volante system, but for what it's worth. I went to the wrecking yard about a year ago and found the biggest plastic air intake hose I could find. (3") I then cut a 3" hole on the bottom front side of my stock intake box and inserted the hose into the hole. Then I routed the hose toward the front, around the battery and stuck it right next to the radiator. This lowered my egt's by 75 deg. and only cost me $3. 00. I like the "KISS" system "keep it simple(&cheap) stupid"

Volant system

Blair, the element looked about as big as the box will allow. They told me they had sent a system to somebody in Nevada for dyno testing(DD maybe?) I called AFE(who supplies the element) the other day and asked them for the CFM numbers on the filter they are sending to Volant. The guy was pretty tight lipped but said the filter was in the 400-500 CFM range, which isn't much compared to the AFE mega whatever they call it. There is a Volant dealer a few blocks from my work, I'll try to stop on the way home and ask about price/availability and if there is any dyno info yet.

$296.00!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, per the local vendor, this deal will cost $296. 00, awful lot of money. But, if you look at the AFE website, the Mega cannon lists for $295. 00 so it looks like a draw. The vendor called Volant and still no dyno or flow numbers. Guess we'll just have to wait for now. Hopefully, if this turns up with decent numbers, one of our fine vendors can get the price down closer to $200. 00 like they have done with the AFE setup.

Blair, I had the box on my truck for a few days. I did a few runs with my stock box w/K&N to get a egt reading and then installed the new box. I pulled my 5er(9000 lb+/-) up the same hill and couldnt tell any difference between the two. But, I must add, my testing was far from scientific. Trying to watch traffic, tach, egt, and boost gauges was too much for my simple mind. One thing I was disappointed in was the intake noise, it is just as bad as a scotty filter. I'm playing around with it now to see if there is any way to draw air from somewhere else other than the cowl.



It is really a high quality unit that fits good and takes about five minutes to install. Even if it only flows the same or a little more than a stock box/K&N, it is worth it to me to not have to deal with the grease/sealing issue in a stock box.

The online store there doesn't show this kit yet, so I called and they said when it is available to them, they will discount it like the rest of the line. (list $296. 00 less 33%, which is around $198. 00.

Thanks for the input Sam, Those are the kinds of test I like to see and like you said it is sometimes hard to duplicate due to traffic conditions. Do you have any idea of the flow rate of this system?

Blair, I called AFE to find this out and they weren't very helpful as far as flow numbers. If you know any math wizards who know how to figure the area of a cone, the filter size is:



length: 7. 5"

small end circumference:15. 0"

big end circumference:20. 0"



For reference, a stock box filter is 10" x 11" which should mean 110 inches of surface area.



Actually, I will be in San Jose on March 30 & 31 for my kid's sports acrobatics meet. The unit is so easy to install, I can box it up and bring it with me and you can try it out if you want. I'm sure you are better at testing this kind of stuff than me. Let me know.

If i did the math correctly, that is only 127 square inches of filter media. Not much bigger than stock. Might still flow enough for moderate bombing though, hopefully they will give up the flow data for us
