In a previous post I described my torque converter locking up in trans and stalling truck. Dodge says I need to rebuild or replace($95 diagnosis). AAMCO is checking it out to see if its a solenoid or something (Free diagnosis). AAA towing (free) It's Memorial weekend so I won't hear from them till Tuesday. Hope it's electrical. Anyways. .

I tow a 14,500lb 5th Wheel 1,000 miles 4 or 5 times a year.

Transmission choices?

Shawn,

As you probably know, the auto transmission in our 2nd gen trucks is the weakest link in the drivetrain. It's just barely adequate for stock power levels and some careful towing. From your signature, it looks like you're already pushing things, more so when towing. If you only have the transmission rebuilt to OEM specs it won't last long.

If you want a heavy duty transmission that'll hold up to heavy towing and the power upgrades you've done to your truck, take a look at Goerend Bros. Not inexpensive, but you'll never have to worry about the transmission again. Investing in a Goerend transmission is certainly cheaper than buying new truck or having the transmission rebuilt again in a short time.

Thanks Guys. I'm in Dallas right now. After I know more on Tuesday I'll be calling Goerend, Dtt, and Suncoast for pricing and warrenties if needed.

I'll chime in for Goerend. They refered me to a shop here in California, shipped the trans to them and I had it installed. I went for whole deal, Torque conv, billet shafts, all the goodies... 4 years and about 40,000 miles... flawless... (knock on wood)

Had a tough decision and went with the DTT because James is putting in my trans HBarlow. Goerened is pretty bad *** though with the 47/48re/rh being 98% of his workload. If I had another Ram I'd do both. DTT shipped Tue and I expect to be rolling in a week. I'm adding a Derale 15950 Atomic Cool trans cooler and temp gauge as well. Looking forward to rolling with the new transmission.

don't mean to hijack the thread with this question but how hard would it be to change from an auto trans to a manual 6 speed? is it possible?
Reason I ask is that i have an auto but when mine( 2001 2500) goes out I want to replace it with a NV5600 six speed.
has anyone performed a similar mod going from auto trans to manual? what did it cost and which model did you go with?

The best way to do it is a transmission trade with two trucks side by side. There are some PCM issues. Use the search feature. SNOKING

Lots of old threads have asked and answered that question. As snoking suggested, use the search feature to find them.
