New Blue Chip box is FANTASTIC!

I had the good fortune of hanging out with Robert Swartz and Chip Fisher of Blue Chip Diesel, while at Thunder in Muncie.

Rob hooked up one of Chip's new boxes to my truck, while it was on the dyno. Wow... 445 HP, 1252 ft. lbs. of torque... ...

It's not just the power levels that are great, it's the features of the box. It is highly programmable, multiple programs and settings, built in boost and EGT gauges, high EGT defueling(gradual defueling, not a fast letoff), so many tricks, I can't remember them all. It'll do everything but sit up and beg for a doggy biscuit. This is one of those things that makes you glad you have a VP44 and not one of those antiques with a sliding plate and $400 visits to the Bosch tech.

No, I didn't get to keep the box. If only I had heard of it a couple months ago, I'd probably have it in my truck right now.

Those of you looking into buying a box would do very, very well to take a long hard look at this product. I was also impressed with Chip and Rob personally, and hope I get to meet them again someday... maybe when I finally get the $$$$ to get a Blue Box of my own...

I've had one of the beta units of this box for about 2 months now and it's performed very well. I understand some of the software has been redone for the production unit - supposed to make smoke control easier. I've ordered the production unit, it should be arriving some time next week, I'll post an update.

I have the old 3 wire Blue Box... it still performs great. If I ever replace it, it would be with Chip's newest box. Their customer service is great and so is their product. Thanks go out to Chip and Jane every time I turn it on... they just might not hear me from across the country.

It makes about 6 more HP than my TST PM3. But that is at pump killing levels, running way over the parameters, both boxes set at maximum. Also, the dyno was somewhat off that day.

I'd venture an educated estimate that with stage 4 injectors, you could easily attain 500 HP with the new Blue Chip box.

If you're just starting out, the Blue Chip box makes more sense, as it has EVERYTHING, including gauges... Factor in the price of gauges in addition to any other box on the market, and suddenly the Blue Chip box starts to look like a bargain.

I'm not a vendor, I can't give you a price. You need to call them.

Hokey, welcome to the TDR ! The Blue Chip box can be set to extremes... so beware... you might or might not know, from reading these forums, about certain precautions you must take before turning up the power on your Cummins Ram.

Blue Chip has several excellent, well-written handouts on this subject. Call them, and ask that they mail you their flyers :

"Recommended Approaches to Enhancing Power on 1998 1/2 - 2001 Dodge Diesel Trucks", and "VP44 Pump Failures Explained". Those two will tell you all you need to know.

The best thing about this box, is it's the last one you will have to buy, you won't be trading them out in a continual search for more power. You should only consider this box if you have it in the back of your mind that you will possibly go as high as you can in the HP dept. in the future. I've seen way too many guys take a tentative approach to engine upgrades, it costs them more in the long run when they eventually decide it's not enough, and have to buy still another box, or bigger injectors.

Some folks, however, are content in the middle ranges, 300-400 HP, and not looking for extremes. Planning ahead to fit your budget, and thirst for speed, is the key to it all !

Modified 4 wire box

I have the new basic 4 wire box.



It is not blue anymore because of the interior color... .

The extra switches you see on the top is my modification. I hooked up 2 switches to the jumpers that are inside. Now instead of taking the back cover off, I simply change the jumper settings by the switches.

both switches on is 15%

yellow switch on and green off is 30%

Green switch on and yellow off is 40%

Both switches off is the big 50%

I'm thinking of putting a led light off the power switch to indicate when it is on.



I love this box and I highly recomend it.

On a tow before i was going up a hill at 60 WOT

Now with the box at 30% I go up the same hill at 70 at half throttle.



I paid $699 at may madness

Eric, nice set up, but that's not the unit I'm referring to. The NEW Blue Chip box is so new, they do not yet have brochures to hand out at events, nor pictures of it on their website. It has an LED screen, three lines, similar to an alpha-numeric pager, only bigger. Under the screen, there are 3 buttons for operating and programming it.

Race track comparison

How is it compared to the Power Edge? I have never dynoed my truck just raced it. It ran 14. 66 at 91. 87mph, with DD2 injectors. I didn't see if anyone was running the Blue Chip Box to compare with.

Blue Chip FMS Wizard

Hey Briar, you are talking about the new FMS Wizard. I saw that trick piece on Piers' 24v Ram at Dyno Days in April... ... AWESOME! If I had it to do all over again one of those bad boys would be in my Ram. I believe the retail price I heard was $1400. (includes digital boost and pyrometer readouts). BTW, the FMS Wizard is the most sophisticated and powerful 24v power enhancement on the market.

saw that one (I think) at the may madness. It looks like the one you described.

This is really neat in that it don't enhance til you need it over 12-14 psi boost then it kicks in.

This is a boost box, not a timing box. You can turn it off or when you are cruising low, it doesn't enhance and you can adjust it on the fly now that I have the switches.

My Power Edge is also an adjustable box that adjusts on the fly. Although my PE does do both fueling and timing which works best for me as I wanted some timing and not just fuel. It also has smoke control so that you can have approx. 100hp with vertially no smoke. I like my smoke. . The box that I use is the PE Comp. It gave me about 150hp, with smoke control which worked for me . Although it didn't come with guages. I don't know what yours cost but mine costed approx. $800

this is starting to sound like an info-mertial,



at what RPM does the "chip" defuel (Ans. 2200RPMs). and how/where are you to mount the sizely digital readout (3 5/8X2 1/4X1)which costs another $595.



how fast can you stop and crack open the case to change the jumpers to get more power out of it?



does it really only take 15 minutes to install.



I have $973. 00 invested in my box and guages, and turned out 310/675 with it, exhaust and a new filter. it has a nice little display with arrows up and down for the power levels.



real easy for the wife to de-tune too.



it makes me wonder if the free propane kit ties into this.

I know that my Comp box took me a lot more than 15 minutes to install, closer to 1 hour. i guess if I really pushed maybe 45 minutes.



It seems to me that all these boxes make close to the same power.
