...Daimler to ... sell American half...

d3 cat lost power need help

Some folks will try and convince you that if they are built in Mexico they are of lessor quality. I disagree.

Personally, I think you can get a quality truck no matter where it's built. If I had my choice however, it's a tough call between giving my money to the UAW or Mexico.

As for Ford quality, I can't help but laugh when I read the posts. Ford has had a problem with their previous diesels that is true. However, my current Dodge had to have a new head installed with less than 3000 miles on it. You call that quality???

I am not saying that the Cummins is as bad as the Navistar, what I am saying is that lets be careful if we are living in glass houses. The truth of he matter is that if it wasn't for the fact that Ford sold a metric butt-ton of those diesel crew cabs, we wouldn't have the mega cab today. Dodge missed the boat on that one big time.

Along those lines, where is the Dodge Crew Cab long bed???

I hope for competitions sake, Ford has better luck with this motor. My gut instinct is that they won't because they continue to sucumb to the stupid American need to be able to grab their crotch while bragging about having a V-8 diesel instead of an inline 6 diesel. I have said it before but it bears repeating: in commericial applications, SERIOUS diesel motors are inline.

Oh yah, how about Dodge integrated towing brake controller?? Where is that option.

Don't me wrong, I am a Dodge guy. I had a Ford 7. 3 and learned my lesson the hard way after two very reliable Dodge CTD's.

My brother-in-law, who is a die hard Ferd man, test drove an 08, 6. 4L f-350 SRW ferd. He was totally in awe with it. He wants one so bad, but at $51,000 he can't afford it. I told him go test drive a new Dodge with the 6. 7 CTD. He said, oh I don't want one of those tinny rattle traps.

With that price he should be able to save 8K if you can convince him. Just buy a new CTD after he buys the ford and then out tow him on a combined vacation and don't remove your invoice statement on the passenger window so he can be reminded he actualy wasted more than 8K.

I was with my brother when he test drove an '08 F450. It had the Lariat package, I think. Nice truck and it was very quiet, especially after riding in his 1999 Ford F350 with the 7. 3. The 08 didn't have the power of his 7. 3 and my brother thought it was a dog compared to his 99. The turbo didn't have the lag of his 99, either. He also test drove an '07 Dodge 3500 with the new 6. 7 Cummins. It is equally as quiet as the Ford, but has more power. Price of the Ford was 56K. Didn't see the tag on the Dodge, but my brother was impressed with the difference in the price between the two. The Dodge had just the SLT package.

I've been looking at the new ford the last couple of days too but no test drive yet. The ONLY things I see ford having over dodge is the step and handle in the tailgate, the integrated trailer brake controller and top of my list are the 4 auxillary power switches. The switches are such a good idea for accessories and make a super clean install. I see a lot of trucks with rigged in switches for work lights and beacons. The F-450 I looked at today was $56K and didn't have the switches which I couldn't believe. It also had 4. 88 gears which I would think would have it geared too high for mileage.

Dont forget the speed limiter at 81 MPH.

What state would this be a problem in?

Last I heard Wyoming or some State close by. In my State of California it is 70MPH on the interstate and 65MPH on open Hwy and I travel unloaded at 85-90MPH on either at 2500RPM. Sure am glad that the CTD is not limited to 81MPH. It is not uncommon to travel at 80MPH in the city on the freeways around here and sometimes that is too slow and the other drivers try to push you out of the way by sitting on your bumper at 80MPH.

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT... I wish I had a nickel for every time somebody on this message board has claimed that if you aren't doing 15-20 MPH OVER the speed limit you will get run off the road. ESPECIALLY in our trucks makes me laugh.

I travel for business quite a bit and I have never had issues with anybody running me off the road because I was unwilling to do 90 mph.

Not a popular stance I realize but I have many family members who make a living on the road and they say they same thing.

If they are in the left lane and don't yield to the faster vehicle approaching from the rear, they DESERVE to be "run off the road"!!

When limited to 81 MPH, I could see a LOT of ferds causing the headaches associated with left lane laggers! I drive at the speed of the faster traffic, but never try to be the fastest vehicle on the road. If someone comes up behind and wants to pass, I yield to them if I am in the left lane, then let them be the "bear bait". Apparantly not many sick fours will be the "bear bait"!

Dont drive on the freeways here in So. Cal. then Huskerman because I was pushed out of the way on my Harley just the other nite on the 15 north bound doing 80 MPH and I refuse to go faster than 80 on my Harley. My trip to Vegas was average 85 and had to move over for the auto's who were flying by. I have driven in Idaho and your only freeway (interstate) in Boise is a lot slower than So. Cal. The worst drive of my life was from Winnamucca to Boise, Oregan with thier 55 MPH limit and nothing for miles before the Snake River, I imagine land is cheap there! If I ever figure out how to download video here I will prove it.

Well, first of all, I have driven the freeways in California. Some of them have 4 or more lanes going one direction so how ANYBODY can get pushed out of the way is beyond me. I move over if somebody is about to over take me and I have no trouble. Some times there are a lot of folks blowing by me, some times not.

I have also driven the freeways in Seattle, Atlanta, Phoenix etc, etc etc. Almost ALWAYS in a car smaller than my truck and I have never, ever been "forced" off the road. Not once. If there are only single lanes and the guy wants to tail-gate me, so be it.

I am not the suing type (I think we are too litigeous a society) but if I ever DID get in an accident because some moron insisted on doing 15, 20 mph over the speed limit, you can be damn sure that I am going to make sure that he works the rest of his life for me.

Now, as to your Harley, take a look at my signature. I ride bikes as well and thats a different story. People in auto's just don't see us.

Bottom line, I control how fast I drive, not the ignorant moron tailgating me.

That's just my opinion. I am not offended by anybody who believes differently. It's kind of like folks who will tell you that wearing a helmet or a seatbelt will get you killed. At some point I just look at them and think "this isn't even worth arguing/debating" and I move on.

Huskerman

Huskerman, I didn't say they forced you over by locking bumpers but they do tailgate and it should be your responsibility to move over if you can. On the German Autobohn they will lock bumpers and it would actually be your fault if you dont move over. There is nothing more scary than a Mer/BMW coming up on you at 200KPH (?) when you are doing 130KPH (85MPH). I know its not the law here but that is how I used to drive when I lived in Germany and it is just reflex to move over, so I dont want to judge anybody but it is true that they like to tailgate at 80+ and speed away at a faster rate of speed when you do move over in my neck of the woods.

Have you ever driven in Georgia where there are State police every 2 miles on the interstate and just 3 MPH over will get you a ticket. Just thought you might not know that. I have to drive to Kansas in 2 weeks with my new C&C and hope I don't get any tickets along the way because I will be doing 80 MPH most of the time and if someone is slower I will not be an ash about it.

Back to the issue of the F450 with the speed limiter, it should be my choice if I want to go faster and not Fords unless the truck is unsafe which would't surprise me, just this last thursday a F250 crashed into a tree while driving over the speed limit on the 10 freeway in Ontario Ca when the tire thread came off and he lost control and killed 5 family members. Now I'm not saying he wasn't at fault but a stock tire that comes with the F250 should handle 80 MPH, period.

I do know this about the pupper duty, My F&I manger spent 18 years at the ford store across the street. He still has many connection at different ford dealers across the state, THEY ARE ALL SCARED TO DEATH OF THIS ENGINE!!!!!! Ford has a delivery check list that the customer has to sign agreeing to not modify the truck in any way, you must agree to follow there maintance schedule by the letter or "The ford motor company will not be repsonsible for the cost of repairs to 6. 4 L powerstroke engine" or something along thoses lines,,, Warranty repairs on modified vehicle can be touchy,, i have refussed to warranty wheel bearings on truck and jeep with extremly wide wheel and tire packages or other repairs for OBVIOUS ABUSE but ford is going a little too far. If you due your own maintanence, i hope you have dated reciepts for you oil, oil filter, fuel filter air filter,, and if you cant prove you followed their schedule,,,, well that probally the best way to find out how much it cost to put the twins on there,,,, I've seen several 06-07 Sick. 0 liters with turbo failur (we swear we fixed all the problems in 04,,,,, yeah rite and pintos dont exploed) sure we all have our little problems, that expected,, my adivise to truck prospects,,,, if you have to have a blue oval,,,, drive you 7. 3 till the wheels fall off,, or step up to the plate and "ride with the good guys with the white hats,,, the dodge boys!"

You know,,, I like to cut through all the b. s. with the powerstroke/duramax engines. If ford and chevy needs to build a larger displacement engine with (V-8)40% more moving parts ( and now with a twin turbo for the ford) just to beat the cummins smaller displacement 6cyl engine by a mere 25 to 45 hp which if neccessary I (without the help of a garage) can certainly make up with addition of some bolt ons. I dunno just my rant ... ... Simplicity is the key to success in longevity and above all mantenance.

Now don't get me going on the so called far superior ford/chev allison trannys..... :)

I agree completely!!! I never said that I thought that people should get in the way to enforce the speed limit!!

That's just as stupid as driving 15-20 over the limit. I too get out of the way when Billy-Bob-Joe-Billy feels the need to go blowing by me.

I also agree with you to a certain extent about Ford deciding what speed you can drive.

I already told you that I have driven in Georgia as well as a dozen or more other states.

As you said however, this isn't the auto-bahn. The simple truth of the matter is that doing that extra 15-20 mph over the posted speed limit doesn't save you much:

A 30-mile trip at: 55 miles per hour = 32. 7 minutes

65 miles per hour = 27. 7 minutes = 5 minutes saved

75 miles per hour = 24 minutes = 8. 7 minutes saved

Do the math. If you could drive 1000 miles without stopping, then yes, it would save some time. But an 8 hour trip with potty breaks?? Not much.

But, my point wasn't to start a debate about what speeds to travel. It was about how to get the best MPG.

However, if you honestly believe that it's safe to go 80, 85, 90+ MPH while towing a TT or 5th wheel then I would guess that you probably also believe that wearing seat belts and helmets kill people. ;)

This is America, you are free (for the most part until democrats get their way) to be as ignorant or silly as you want to be!! :-laf

No personal insult intended, the above comments are meant to be sarcastic and to hopefully lighten the mood a bit.

Either way, I am just expressing an opinion from by years of driving experience.

I couldn't have said it better myself!!!!

I have enjoyed this thread and posting with you Huskerman, for the record I don't tow at high speed, but W/O 5ver or boat I like 80MPH and I don't wear my seat belt either but I do like to wear my helmet. I'm sure someday I will not be able to use my choice of toilet paper because its found out that nonsoft paper causes hemroids and polititions will outlaw it. Its a mater of, how we can't make up our own mind with our own lives and our own choices.

That's some funny stuff right there RVTRKN! I enjoyed the debate as well. You should note however that I never said the gov't should force you to wear your seatbelt OR a helmet for that matter.

Personally, I believe that law enforcers are a precious resource and should be worrying about real crimes, but that's just my opinion!

I like to think we can have a good natured barb-fest and still share an adult beverage afterwords!!

What, bragging that we have a real commercial-grade medium duty truck diesel isn't crotch-grabbing? :D
