Changes for 2005??

A question about Hummer take-offs

Pyro is pre-turbo... right in the center of my exhaus manifold between cylinders 3 and 4...

The exhaust is the stock 4" exhaust with the cat cut out and the muffler replaced with a magnaflow.

No drone... not loud enough for my taste... LOTS of turbo noise... LOTS!!! I get the standard cummins acceleration BRRRAAAAPPPPPP but only from 2100-2700 RPMs... . I like i, but I sometimes wonder if I wouldn't have been happier with a straight pipe.

At idle the truck sounds nearly stock... I little pop of the throttle provides a little throatier sound... and then under full acceleration it sounds much louder... I like the turbo noise it puts out, but it's still not as loud as my buddy's MBRP.

I would probably do it again for the price... $180 total job.

I think it might sound better once I get a box put on the truck.

My truck will peg my 30# boost gauge with the EDGE EZ and boost elbow. I estimate it to go to 35 psi or more. If you're going to BOMB down the road, you may want to consider the higher gauge. My 30# gauge is OK for me as I'm not at full boost all of the time.

EEngle: the gauges are easy to see and get used to quickly. The DiPricols match the factory gauges very nicely, including the numbers showing soft green illumination from the back. I highly recommend white face gauges for the dash install. Against the dark dashboard, the faces jump out, especially at night.

As far as boost numbers, even Bob was surprised to see 34# under throttle in 5th gear. But I can duplicate it every time if I get on it a little (that could explain the MPG though). I may just add a VA timing box down the road for towing, so anything but the 60# gauge would have been a waste of money for me.

I am running pre turbo as well, and the gauge reacts FAST when I get into the go pedal. Remember, one of the things DC did to this engine was to inject oil at the bottom inside of the piston. Obiviously the sliderule guys figured that they were going to be making some heat with this configuration... ...

jjames: not to worry about burning up a piston with the stock configuration. If you got hot enough to be in the danger zone, one of the EIGHT computers that runs your truck would de-fuel it first. DC don't want to be buying no new motors... .....

Sarge this sounds good but how do the computers know what the temp is?

Having said that, I will never let mine get above 1400.

Are you referring to the 2nd Gens as well as the 03 & 04's, or just the 04. 5, 600?

In the 2 Gens, 1250 to 1300 was always consider maximun EGT's.

What is the limit for EGT's on 03's & 04's (305HP's)?

You guys got me thinking of installing my Dual Spa soon just out of curiosity.

Here they are in my former life (Dmax)

I really don't know anything about 2nd generation. Never had one.

I was referring to 3rdn generation.

RankRam: Fuel and air make heat, more fuel, more heat. I don't know if the sensors can read temps, but they know ecactly how much fuel your putting in, and how much boost it equates to. Thus the reason for the engine to defuel at a pre-determined point.

Thats also why all of the boxes incorporate some type of boost fooler (electronic, boost elbow, ect). And, the quest for more power (spelled fuel+air=heat/power,) generally requires better breathing on the intake side, less restrictive turbo, and enhanced breathing on the exhaust side.

305 HP/555TQ or 325 HP/600TQ? I know that they changed the pistons in the 600's. Is it possible that John Holmes was talking about the 600 and not the 555?

Just want to know the correct limits.

Im in the same boat with my exh. 200 bills installed no kitty. they sound awesome but with the TST, WOW it gets a whole lot louder than any straight pipe 2nd gen dodge ive ever heard, better too!

After thinking about all the posts in the past couple of months about EGT readings for the 3rd generation trucks, I wonder what the average tolerance for accuracy that most brands of EGT guages have. It seems that some guys are getting 1300 degrees with hardly a load at all and some guys empty like me can stay on a long grade at WOT to just see 1150-1200. The hottest that my SPA digital guage has ever read is 1170. I was pulling a 6000lb load WOT up a steep grade in 5th gear, and had to shift to 6th since I ran out of revs for my speed. I am still completley stock.

Anybody know what voltages vs. temperatures data for the thermocouples that come with our guages? Maybe we can check accuracy of our guages that way. It could be that most thermocouples are dead accurate, but our guages themselves may not.

Just some food for thought that may keep a few of us guys from pulling our hair out with those high readings.

Sarge,

forgive my ignorance, but who is Bob. I mean is this someone in a body shop, garage what? The guages look awsome and I had thought of something like that as well, especially after I realized I didn't need the area for my XM. But like how do I make it happen?

Oh sorry about that. Bob4X4 is a member of this site, and a member of the SoCal chapter of the Rattlin' Rams. He is the diesel mechanic at a Dodge dealership by my house. Bob is extremely knowledgeable guy, and does a variety of service work for folks all over the SoCal area.

The gauge mount that we are talking about is now available thru Geno's catelog, and was advertised in the last edition of the TDR. It is fairly inexpensive, about 29 bucks I think. I had Bob do mine just because I'm slow, and way too busy at work. Bob is fast and does excellent work. If you have the time, and the tools to tap the manifold, the install probably is not that difficult. Sarge

Like I said in the other post... Gauges?? If D/C wanted me to worry about these things, they would be mounted in my dash from the factory. I blast up and over the I-5 pass's every month and never give egt's boosts, or other temps a second thought! Im too busy adjusting the infinity system to listen to the latest Tony Bennet c/d and get to Grants Pass in my usual 3 hours and 45 min from Chico. My D/C zero deduct will provide me with a loaner and a new motor should my motor have a melt down, god forbid. Until then, its left lane all the way and ill see y\a all at the diesel pumps in Corning. Seems to be the most reasonable priced truck stop on I-5. . Happy Cruising everyone. My 305hp has all the power Ill ever want and I really doubt that my 70-75 mph up any grade will hurt the mighty Cummins. For what I would have spent on gauges, Ill just put it in the kitty for that first tire replacement.

GezzzzI love this truck. Im even thinking of a 30'+ travel trailer but I still doubt that Ill hurt thr Cummins since the max speed limit is 55 in Oregon and Calif with a trailer on all the highways. But, once I get to Nevada and Oklahoma, its mostly flat and there its the 75 rule, trailer or not! I have no fear! Enterprise has some rather nice rides and my AAA Plus card will put me up in a 5star hotel for up to 5 days while they fix my problem. If it takes longer, AAA will deliver me and my family back home and deliver the truck once its fixed. The extra few bucks the plus card was is well worth it! They also pay for ALL MEALS! Kinda makes you want to break something while driving through Reno!

Yes, you are right. You don't really need gauges IF you keep your truck stock. They are nice to have though.

I see by your sig. that you have a automatic trans.

In my opinion, a transmission temp gauge SHOULD have been installed at the factory on all trucks that have the tow package and the automatic transmission. Just my opinion for what it's worth.
